About
This three-hour-long train ride along the Bohinj railway will undoubtedly be an unforgettable experience for any true rail enthusiast. The views of Lake Bled, passing through numerous gorges, crossing many tunnels, the longest of which measures 6,327 m (3.93 miles), never fail to impress. Make sure your cameras are at hand!

An enjoyable ride with lots of entertainment on the way. Clear info from the guard in Slovenian, German and English. There is a tourist information office at the station in Nova Gorica where you can get maps and helpful advice. We walked into Gorizia and had coffee in the lovely Piazza Vittoria before visiting the castle. There were good views of the area from the top. The return journey was a little longer (the train has to wait for other trains to pass as well as to take on water). However, the guard brings round souvenir postcards which you can buy. If you write them straight away they are franked in the mail coach and posted in Jesenice. There is also the chance to have a snack at a station cafe at one of the stops. We had an ice cream for the bargain price of one euro. A worthwhile experience but a long day (11 hours).

When visiting Slovenia, this excursion is a must if you enjoy hob-knobing with the locals and love cultural immersion. Maybe it was because we had a large group of local tourists, there was not much by way of english translation during the train ride, but when we disembarked the train for a tour of Brda, we had excellent, helpful and ever-smiling guides!! The region we explored with the guide is, without a doubt, some of the most beautiful imagery my eyes have beheld. I loved the castle restaurant, where they provided a fairly delicious vegetarian meal (I was most gracious as a vegetarian for this accomodation). We picked up the most delicious olive oil my husband and I have ever tasted, made by the coop. The tour of the winery was fun, and the vine was mighty delicious. Oh, and I grabbed some darn tasty cherries for the ride back and some of the best hand milled soap I have ever experienced on my skin!!! We hopped back on the steam train and rode the way to Bled in the Bar car...it was loud and the fumes of the steam engine permeated the air, but the drinks were good, and the staff and people were some of the best I have met in my travels. Seriously, Slovenia is one nation that knows how to love life and live well regardless of the amount of money in our pockets. I would highly recommend this Steam train excursion to any one who loves culture, steam trains, vine, olive oil, or feast for the eyes provided by fairly untouched nature!

Great trip on a historic train! Very picturesque was the participation of arch-duke Franz Ferdinand and his wife who opened the railway in a ceremony in Bled Jezero station. Also great boat trip on beautiful river Soča.

Due to the weather the steam engine was replaced by a diesel train something to do with fire hazard.
The promised views were masked by trees through most of the trip although the glimpses we did get were spectacular.
We also took the coach trip but was diappointed as there were so few english speaking people on the trip most of the commentary was in German as an example from the wine tasting back to the train took 35 minutes about 3 minutes of English then the rest of the trip was in German not what we paid for.
Also the characters only spoke and interacted with the German guests.
The trip back was littered with long stops in stations where there was little or nothing to do and as temperatures were 35 degrees it would have been better without the stops.

Dear Roger,
many thanks for your review. We will try to do our best to fix that black spots but sometimes, especially that long stops are not in our power because we are dependent from the regular traffic.

Found the trip ok except the fact that one doesn't see much of the scenery due to the trees and greens along the line

It was a very nice little trip in a very beautiful country. The train was beautiful and you could feel how it must have been traveling with a steam train one hundered years ago. Friendly staff

Fantastic trip back on 100 years old engine. Long steam journey to the Italian border. Recommend getting the little shuttle bus from the station at nova groca into Italy as there is nothing in the Slovenia side. We got the train from Bled, there was a bit of a character performance with people in period uniform on the platform. Amazing trip!

I recently did a tour with the steam train. It has been a pleasure to discover a steam train in action. Feel and smell this machine, meet drivers, discuss with other visitors and discover Slovenian landscape.

We had a great trip! One of the more memorable things was when the accordion player was in our car and the people all were singing songs as he played. It was really fun. Scenery was splendid. Stops along the way allowed for stretch breaks and new picture taking moments. We were a bit disappointed that the engine was a diesel and not the steam engine. But all in all, it was a fun trip.

We took this trip in June and although the train journey was good we were left on our own in Gorizia with no information on where to go. Everything is closed on Saturdays so no-one to ask directions etc.

I am hoping to buy a one-way ticket Nova Gorica - Jesenice, but can't find where I can do that! Does anyone have any pointers?
Also, does the train stop at Lake Bled station en route? If I can end my journey at Bled rather than Jesenice, it saves me going back on myself...
Thanks in advance

Hola, Estoy mirando para comprar billetes para la primera semana de agosto (3 agosto) y no hay opción, está desactivado. Es por qué ese sábado no hay está excursión? Ya está lleno?
Muchas gracias.

If you head towards the train station can you see this train from the outside when it is not used?
Written August 9, 2018
It would be difficult because locomotive is stationed a bit further from the Jesenice train station.

Hi. I have a fear of tunnels, but really want to visit the Triglav National Park in Slovenia. Does anyone know if there is a tunnel free route either from Vienna, or coming from the south (Lubliana/Trieste), and travelling by train. We have plenty of time for travelling so can go a longer route to avoid the long mountain tunnels. I could probably cope with 5 - 10 minutes if there's no alternative ! Freda

I was hoping to leave Ljubljana early on 6 June and travel by bus to Franc. I was hoping to catch the cable car there - we are two older Australians so walking is not always easy for me, but okay if reasonably flat.. I thought we could catch the boat back to Ribcev Laz and have a quick look around then catch the bus to Bohinjska Bistrica. I want to do the Bohinj Rail trip to Nova Gorica and would like to go to Jesenice and then back to Lake Bled. The problem I have is the trains spends too much time in Jesenice to then go to Bled. Would I miss very much if we got out at Bled Jerico instead of going all the way through?
We want to stay in Bled the night to explore Lake Bled the same day. The next day we plan to catch the train to Vienna at 8.13 am. Is this doable? I have looked at train times and the train spends hours in Jesenice, making it difficult to see all of this.
I originally planned to see Ljubljana then take the normal Behinj rail route as the steam train is not working on that day. With more reading I would love to fit in Lake Behinj, but is this possible?
Sorry to complicate things. If the trains ran closer together I believe it is possible, as we do this sort of thing all the time, but not sure it is practical. I cannot find the bus timetables to see how things link up that way. It is a pity the trains are not conducive to such travel. Mind you I always seem to stretch things.
Thank you for answering my other questions. Very Much appreciated. Happy 2018. We are really looking forward to seeing Slovenia. Not many Australian seem to do that. With thanks,Carolyn
We would get out of the train at Bled Jezero but need to catch the train back to Vienna from Leste-Bled. Hubby is very concerned we will not be able to catch a taxi from our hotel to Leste-Bled in the early morning.

Boat ride and cable car can be done by 1pm.
Bus will take you to Lake Bled from 13:55 to 14:20.
May take a boat to the island. stay the night there.
Take Regional train R2402 on 7th June at 7:10 to reach Jesenice at 7:23.
Catch D314 from Jesenice at 8:27 to Vilach (9:08) en route Viena.
There are two train stations at Bled 5km apart: Bled Jezeroo (on Jesenice - Nova gorica route) and Lesce Bled (on Ljubljana - Jesenice route).
Hope you can work on this base.

If we travel on the train from Jesenice to Nova Gorica via Bled Jerico, Bohinjska Bistrica, Most na Soči and Kana on 5th June will we see Lake Bohinj please? I realise the steam train is unfortunately not operating on the day we will be there. Thank you, Carolyn

You will go past Lake Bohinj but you will not really see it. For a proper look, you would want to get off the train for a while and walk to the lake. The rest of the route takes you through remote and beautiful landscapes, with fantastic river valleys. There are a few diesel services every day on this route.
