It’s hard to describe what it’s like to see a saint of this caliber in person! The Basilica is very small for a Basilica but you can see the incorrupt body of the great saint high above the altar! There is also a small shrine dedicated to St.Philomena and there must be hundreds of crutches that people have left that have been healed by her intercession! The priests and nuns who run this shrine are very much traditional which is beautiful and probably the reason this shrine has maintained its reverence and sacredness. If you get the chance ask the nuns to guide your tour of the shrine. They have one who speaks very good English and she gives a superb tour!

Saint John Vianney (Jean Baptiste-Marie Vianney) was born on May 8, 1786 to Matthieu Vianney and Marie Beluze. He died on August 4, 1859 at age 73 in Ars, France. He was a French parish priest in the Catholic Church and also the patron saint of all priests. He was ordained priest by Mgr. Simon, Bishop of Grenoble, on August 13, 1815. In 1818, John Vianney was made parish priest of Ars, a small village not very far from Lyons. It was here in this remote hamlet that as the "curé d'Ars" he became known throughout France and the world. While in Ars, he founded an orphanage for girls called "The Providence" with Catherine Lassagne and Benedicta Lardet. It became the model of similar institutions established later all over France. In 1925, Pope Pius XI canonized him. His feast day is August 4th. Today his incorruptible body lies at the main altar in the Basilica of Ars. Don't miss when you are in Ars!

The Basilica is beautiful inside . Love the ceilings and the dome showing the life of St. Philomena,it also has the body of the Holy Cure. It has side alters and beautiful statues inside, the alters i lovely & simple. When you visit the Basilica it is also good time to see the shrine and house of St. John Vianny
