A gem, with hidden extras
Jun 2021
beautiful walk to an old Napoleonic fort, that was repurposed for training during WWII.
The stairs are a cardio workout, but there are resting spots on the way.
Parking is reasonable £4/day

Fantastic hike or bike trip when the weather is nice
Jun 2021
Fantastic hike in one of the most remarkable natural National Trust sites in the region. Hiking to the fort and back takes about 1.5 - 2 hours at a leisure pace. It's also possible to cycle, a semi-paved road with a gentle enough slope for mountain bikes starts slightly east of the steps (follow Brean Down road until you see the path on your left). The first part may be too steep to actually cycle, but once you're "up" it's very pleasant. The fort itself is quite interesting with some information signs showing the different points of interest like officer's mess, gunpowder store etc. but what you're really going for is the amazing view. If the weather allows it, you can even see Brent Knoll hill in the distance!
Beware: it's extremely windy up Brean Down, so only visit when the weather is sunny, otherwise wind chill will make it too cold. Don't do this when it's a rainy day!

Super walk on a fine day!
May 2021
A Lovely walk over the headland - a little stony and rough in places so make sure you wear sturdy shoes. Quite a lot of steps involved too. The views over the coast are stunning and well worth the effort on a clear day - one side towards Burnham and the other towards Weston Super Mare. If you walk to the end of the down, you come to the National Trust Napoleonic Fort on the headland. Quite remote. It's free to enter and there are notice boards giving you some history of the fort, including it's use during WW1 and WW2. Allow at least two hours and enjoy!

Incorrect parking charges
Apr 2021 • Solo
Very nice holiday village for day trips as well, only problem was when i parked in south road car park the management company had claimed that i did not pay for the right amount i stayed for under 4 hours with 1 sign saying £4.00 and another behind the ticket machine saying £4.50, i think the price is £4.50 but was shocked when i got a notice to pay £100 and i of course appealed as i kept the receipt for £4 but they said that only proved i didnt pay for 4 hours, so rejected my appeal i then drove back and took pictures of the signs totally misleading, though i would never tell anyone not to visit brean as mentioned its a really nice place to visit

Birdsong and spring blossom on Brean Down.
Apr 2021
On a warm spring day we enjoyed another great visit to Brean Down. The NT cafe is open for a limited selection of food and drink, we enjoyed coffee before scaling the step up onto Brean Down. We enjoyed the fine views while walking out to the old fort, and then ate our picnic while watching the birds. There were quite a few other visitors on the day as we returned along the old miltary road, and I noted the 'one way' system up the steps seems no longer in place.
After a takeaway tea from the cafe we then enjoyed a walk along the beach, it was another enjoyable visit.

Lovely day out

Beautiful views, a lovely walk , and the fort is very interesting at the end. Lots of steps to climb up and with the one way system they can't be avoided at present.

Fabulous views in all directions
Mar 2021
We love coming to Brean Down - the "other" side of Weston. The views are stunning in all directions. This visit there weren't many other people (the kids had gone back to school), so we had the place almost to ourselves, which was nice! We could see right across to St Nicholas Church on Uphill. And the view along Brean Down itself is always lovely, dramatic even, especially with the sun shining on it!

Great views

Walked all the way from John Fowler to brean down on the beach. The beach was very clean and quite a few people walking. We walked to the top of the hill and the views were excellent. Would be a nice walk in the summer

Lovely walk whilst in Tier 2
Dec 2020
We came to Brean Down for a breath of fresh air and it seems the world and his wife had the same idea. The carpark was closed because of the Covid safety measures, so it was very difficult to park anywhere. We did finally find a spot and had a leisurely walk trying to dodge every one else. It was worth it, though, as the views are so beautiful, and the weather was dry and sunny with a few puffy clouds (great after all the rain recently). So you can't blame people for getting out and about while they can, because, after going into Tier 3 on Boxing Day, we may well go into Tier 4 very shortly.

What a view!
Oct 2020 • Family
Maybe the roads are not the best if your in a bigger vehicle, but the rewards are breathtaking! The hike up the steps will make your pump, the walk and views are amazing and the fort gives you a sense of the importance of its location. Very interesting reading on the power of the artillery installed. On a sunny day and the tide is out, it's lovely!
