I read about this "orchidarium" in a guide book and emailed them to be sure they'd be open. It is a work and labor of love of one lovely man- Mr. Suarez- who has planted hundreds of orchids from all over Oaxaca and Mexico. He gives you a short orientation about orchids (in Spanish) and then gives you a magnifying glass. You set off on a trail through his property discovering wonderful orchid surprises en route. He supports and maintains the land and flowers all by himself and it is a shame that more people don't know about it and visit such an amazing sight. Highly recommended. Allow about an hour.

Anyone who loves gardening and orchids (or even those who don't), should visit Mr. Suarez' amazing garden of over 1,000 orchids on display in a forested setting that he created several decades ago. His garden is located in the pueblo of San Andres Huayapam, a short taxi ride from Oaxaca. This garden should be included in every guidebook as an attraction to visit during one's stay in Oaxaca. My friends and I spent several hours walking on winding paths through this orchid and bromeliad paradise and enjoyed every minute of it. The garden is on Facebook. Mr. Suarez is also the author of "Algunas Orquideas de Mexico."

And don't miss the tejate stand in the pueblo!

Not to be missed! And at last the Oaxaca Lending Library has started to organize tours there. I have visited 5 times since 2010 and plan on returning often....Señor Suárez is a very special person. It is always a pleasure to share his incredible creation with him.
