We really enjoyed our tour and wine tasting this afternoon. Today was very hot, 40 degrees, so the cool of the caves was welcome! You definitely need to take warm clothes, a few in the group seemed uncomfortably chilly!
The guide was a very friendly and knowledgeable woman - the tour was in French but she gave us English guides detailing each point of the tour and also a verbal summary as we went round. She was also good at engaging the children in the group.
During the tasting, she explained the wines to us in a helpful manner. We appreciated the lack of 'hard sell' and actually bought two boxes as the rose was dry and tasty and the red had a little more body than some local wines. I think it may be possible to book a tour in English for a group, see website for minimum numbers.

A 2 hour tour of the caves with the delightful and entertaining 'caveman' Stef, complete with wine/local delicacy tasting. 9€ each.
Worth noting that the caves remain a constant 12 degrees throughout the year so dress up warm whatever the weather.

Staying at the owners chamber d'hotes we were interested to know more about her wines so we were looking forward to the guided visit to the Caves a couple of hundred metres up the road. The tours are conducted by the totally charming and amusing Stefan, her brother in law. His English is excellent which enabled us to get the full benefit of his incredible knowledge of the underground network of caves and there amazing history, everything from mushroom cultivation to a refuge for fleeing refugees during the war. He pointed out perfectly preserved writings and drawing on the walls and ceilings and regaled us with a narrative of fascinating facts and tales. The trip is rounded off with a great tasting session of the domains wines, this tasting is unusual in that each wine is paired with a food which makes a perfect marriage of food and wine, from fantastic homemade terrine, mushrooms, cheese and moving on to the sweeter apricots and dark chocolate, we loved it! To top it all off we came home with a couple of boxes of our favourite wines and will now enjoy them and home and remember the fabulous Stefan and our trip to Troglo Degusto.

Going to Troglo Degusto in the Loire Valley. Why?

Here you will be greeted by Stephane Josseau (Steff) who will take you on an unforgettable walk into miles of underground caves( tunnel). Any Historian will be thrilled by all information which he has at his finger tips( I thought and expected to hear about wine only ! )

After the tour/ walk we returned to the underground winebar and the sampling began!! Four different tastes..accompanied by local delicacies matching each wine.
I don't want to give too much away because I do hope you'll visit.

But I will say that he is an exceptional welcoming host who obviously loves his wine and tourists..

Before you leave you are invited to leave a message on the wall. At the entrance of the Cave. I did.....in Welsh, of course!

This is an amazing tunnel system that provided limestone blocks for the chateaus in the surrounding areas. The tour was taken by a quirky man by the name of Steph who obviously enjoys his job and is very knowledgeable about the tunnels. After the tour we were treated to some local wines, pate and cheese. This tour is a must.

Forgot to reserve, so turned up just on speculation that we'd be able to join an afternoon tour. Steph was very helpful and full of interesting information about the quarrying tunnels and their historical uses over the centuries. Great wine tasting to finish. Would definitely recommend

Have you ever asked yourself where did all the materials for the chateaux of vallee de la loire come for? Here's a place that gives you the story, spieced up with some good story-telling made by the owner who has dedicated a year of his life to learn by heart the tunnels underneath his domain. If you want to experience the Loire in a different way -that's the place for you.

Stephan is an excellent guide and managed to deliver both French and English commentaries with ease and easy for us to follow. Covers the local history geography, geology, the war, making wine, growing mushrooms. There is amazing evidence that has been preserved on all these matters. I wasn't too sure about being enclosed, but the tunnels are mostly level with no stairs, and the entertainment kept me focused. Stephan is excellent host and the wine and food tasting was lovely.

Stephane gives an amazing tour of these tunnels. His knowledge of the history is considerable. He kept our adult attention, as well as our 13 year old son's. It was just the three of us, but he gave us his all. I wasn't sure what to expect from the tour, but I was so happy we did it. I would highly recommend Troglo Gusto. The wine tasting at the end of the tour was great, too, with pairings of fruit, cheese and chocolate chosen by Stephane.

We were looking for a wine tasting experience but found so much more at Troglo Degusto! We arrived after the tours were done for the day but Stephane and his family were still there and they took care of us. We met his brother, sister in law, and nephews. They were all so nice! Stephane took us on an abbreviated tour since it was after closing time, but it was still extremely interesting. After the tour of the cave network we had the full wine tasting experience with some amazing appetizers. The salami made by his uncle was out of this world! After the tour, when we asked how much to pay, he said to pay whatever we felt it was worth since he couldn't give us the whole tour!! What a nice guy! We had so much fun and he was so accommodating and funny and helpful! We bought some wine from him and after we paid for wine and tour he added some more wine because he said we had given him too much. The regular tour has a set price which I don't know how much it is but whatever it is its worth it!!! Would definitely recommend and would do it again in a heartbeat!
