About
Described by a Royal Horticultural Society judge as 'one of the most unique and outstanding gardens in the world', Andromeda is the original garden of Barbados. It provides visitors with an authentic garden experience and is a wonderful haven for biodiversity. Created as a private botanic garden by Iris Bannochie (three Gold medals at the Chelsea Flower Show, Silver Crown of Merit issued by the Barbadian government and much more) from the 1950s. At that time, Barbados was simply a land exploited for sugar, and a country without a long history of garden creation. Andromeda is rare and unique. Comprised of about 20 connected gardens, the variety of plants and experiences is incredible. There are over 500 different plant species, including over 100 species of trees. It feels very natural, yet is completely woman-made. Wildlife add so much to the enjoyment! Andromeda Botanic Gardens, 'the best garden in Barbados by far', is organic. Mondays, only open for pre-booked tours.

A well marked trail that is full of QR codes to scan and get more information about the plants, which is a nice touch. Cute cafe with reasonably priced food and a cute gift shop. Less lush than Hunte’s but still worth a visit.

Thank you so much for your review. Andromeda is a botanic garden, not a show garden. There are huge conceptual differences between gardens - just like films, books etc. Andromeda is a botanical landscape with a mandate to conserve, research and educate. It is still is one of the largest gardens, has the widest variety of plant species (over 500) and an incredible number of tree species. It was not created as a tourist attraction and is completely unique with a variety of smaller gardens creating an everchanging journey. And the history! Goodness! Lovers of authentic gardens spaces really appreciate Andromeda as there is so much more to experience than many of the other glorious gardens in Barbados. For many Andromeda is their favourite garden 'by far'. Conservation - our soon-to-be-built new Ethnobotanical Garden will show our use of local plants. We are very excited about this project so I hope you are able to return. Thanks again. Regards Sharon

This is a magnificent garden that has been created with love and maintained to an outstanding standard. It is an historic 1950’s landscape created as a private botanical garden by Iris Bannochie. To wander around its winding paths, learning about the fascinating plants using either the detailed notes which Sharon sent me, or scanning the QR codes around the garden, was a real education.

There is so much to see and visiting this magnificent garden should be on any plant lovers itinerary. I will be visiting the island again in the future and will ensure that Andromeda is on my list of very special places to visit.

Spent a lovey morning here with friends, with a cheerful, informative welcome from Annalise, who also served our refreshments afterwards. (My wife says she made the best rum punch)
And Winston gave us a detailed run down on what Bajan Conchies are and how to make them.

Aww! Thank you so much for coming. I'm pleased you had a wonderful personal experience with Anna-Lisa and Winston. Our rum punch is the best - we only use fresh juice and make everything from scratch - ok the rum is out of a bottle! Thanks for your review and I hope you can return. Regards Sharon

Well worth a visit! This garden is all about the plants and they are stars! Its packed with a huge variety, lovingly and naturally set out. We were the only visitors, which was part of the charm. Nice little gift shop and refreshing drink at the end. Do go and visit!

Thank you. Yes! What an amazing plant collection! To think that Iris Bannochie started this in the 1950s in Barbados - a country covered with sugar cane, with no history of garden creation. It is a phenomenal achievement by our most gifted and influential gardener. I'm super pleased that you enjoyed it. Thanks for reviewing and I hope you can return. Regards Sharon

The garden is beautiful and well laid out. It's intention I believe is to create a habitat where the plants are allowed to grow naturally as in a forest. I personally prefer a more manicured garden. Also the Cafe was closed and no other visitors were there when we went. The monkeys also roam freely which was wonderful but also frightening for me. Overall I would recommend q visit.

Thank you for your review. Yes! Andromeda is beautiful and well laid out. Thank you! Our intention is the honour the garden created by Iris Bannochie and to protect her amazing collection of plants, including the trees she planted over a period of decades. Our intention is also to adhere to our mandate as a botanical garden - conservation, research, education and, of course, to display Iris' garden to the public. It is not a show garden and it was not created as a tourist attraction. I think it is important to judge Andromeda on what it is, as opposed to judging it by something it was never meant to be. It is Iris Bannochie's Andromeda Botanic Gardens. Iris was our most gifted and influential gardener, starting Andromeda from the 1950s as a retreat and a space that could house her ever-growing plant collection, sourced from a myriad of expeditions. She also needed somewhere to experiment with plants as she was a scientist. She won numerous accolades and her garden at Andromeda is a heritage site as well as the garden with the widest variety of plant species. Comprised of wilder areas and more cultivated (manicured) areas, the journey through Andromeda is ever-changing. The plants grow naturally, to an extent, but much work is required to maintain and control the plants in this tropical environment. The feeling of being natural is a testament to Iris Bannochie's genius. Andromeda is completely woman-made. The trees Iris planted provide a sense of permanence and naturalness. The café opening hours are on the website. It is closed on Mondays. Yes the monkeys roams freely as they are wild animals. We do not feed them and you are perfectly safe if they see you. They will either ignore you completely or walk/run away. And unfortunately yes. Although you recommend it and thank you for that, we do not get enough visitors. The past 20 months have been very difficult for us as well as other small businesses. Andromeda really needs support. Thank you for coming and I hope you can return and experience Andromeda with a new understanding. Regards Sharon

Thank you so much for your review. We are open, despite all the closures caused by lockdowns, volcanic ash, freak storm, hurricane and covid19 diagnoses! Anna-Lisa's Café is glorious - great value local food. Thank you for mentioning it. We have plans for expansion so will add even more beauty to this fabulous garden. I hope you are able to return. Thanks again. Regards Sharon

Friends who recently visited Barbados recommended visiting Andromeda Botanic Gardens and I'm glad we decided to take their advice. It's a wonderful display of exotic plants and even more impressive that it was created by Iris Bannochie who single handedly created a tropical paradise introducing specimens from around the world.
Additionally the staff have tremendous enthusiasm to retain the dedication and love that was required to create this beautiful oasis.

Really beautiful place, so much information is provided but you can just have a wonder around and look at the pretty foliage. No real restrictions to where you can walk, no keep off the grass signs so was lovely to be able to get up close. Everything is HUGE!
The lady that welcomed us in was so friendly and bubbly.
The cafe is brilliant! Perfect place to have lunch after going to Bathsheba as the restaurant’s there are very expensive, and this is less that 5mins away. The rum punch was lovely, and the whole menu is extremely well priced.

The only reason I have given 4 stars, is the entry fee is expensive I thought. However you can return again, that’s why it’s good to go here first as you can come back again during your holiday if you have a free day - as you definitely would have missed something. They also have a free map of the island so you can plan your trip.

Also, Locals get free entry - I know that doesn’t mean anything to us tourists but it’s a lovely touch and I wish more places in the world offered that to their community.

Thank you for your review. Yes, everything at Andromeda commands the attention. It is such a great garden, sadly overlooked by many visitors. The entry fee is comparable or below other gardens in Barbados so your reduced rating does seem a tad unfair. Locals are often excluded from experiencing their own heritage. By offering free entrance to our local population we ensure everybody is able to participate in this rather special space. Thanks again. Regards Sharon
