About
Described by a Royal Horticultural Society judge as 'one of the most unique and outstanding gardens in the world', Andromeda is the original garden of Barbados. It provides visitors with an authentic garden experience and is a wonderful haven for biodiversity. Created as a private botanic garden by Iris Bannochie (three Gold medals at the Chelsea Flower Show, Silver Crown of Merit issued by the Barbadian government and much more) from the 1950s. At that time, Barbados was simply a land exploited for sugar, and a country without a long history of garden creation. Andromeda is rare and unique. Comprised of about 20 connected gardens, the variety of plants and experiences is incredible. There are over 500 different plant species, including over 100 species of trees. It feels very natural, yet is completely woman-made. Wildlife add so much to the enjoyment! Andromeda Botanic Gardens, 'the best garden in Barbados by far', is organic.

A great few hours escape in nature.
If you are in Barbados don't miss these beautiful and wonderful gardens. On our walk we bumped into Sharon (manager?) and had a really enjoyable and informative chat with her. It really is a different world. Also, don't miss the on site cafe which serves great food and drinks.
Hi and thank you for your review. I'm lucky enough to own the business at Andromeda Botanic Gardens and I love it more and more every day! Iris Bannochie left Barbados a truly special botanical landscape. And I love talking about it 😊. We just need more visitors so please help us spread the word! It is truly up there with the greatest gardens. It is an authentic garden, created as a private space from 1954 and we are focused on protecting our biodiversity and being an inclusive space for all our communities. Thanks again and I hope you can return. Regards Sharon

Beautiful and varied gardens with great food.
We went as a party of 10 with 2 small children and had a great couple of hours here. The trails were easy to follow and the descriptions of the trees and plants very interesting. The children loved feeding the fish. The cafe proved a welcome shelter from the heavy rain but also gave us the opportunity to taste both the drinks and food there. Both were delicious and included octopus, blackened fish, omelette and literally the best fries ever. All cooked freshly and to order. Very much well worth a visit .
Thank you so much for your review. Andromeda is perfect for families and great value as children are free. And yes, feeding the fish is great for kids and adults! 😊 The plant variety is incredible - over 600 plants species, including over 100 tree species, all contained within different gardens across this 8 acre botanical landscape. Eastside Kitchen is independent and the food is so delicious! Hope you can return. Thanks again. Regards Sharon

    Stunning and Unique Botanical Gardens
Wow! A must see. We had a fabulous visit. In order to appreciate the incredible variety of plants, trees, fruits etc it is important to give yourself at least two hours to explore and enjoy the atmosphere. If you’re hungry or thirsty there’s an excellent bar/restaurant serving delicious local specialties. Make sure you meet Sharon, the enthusiastic and dedicated owner/manager who is a delightful character and will give you a personal guided tour.
Thank you so much for your review. Unique? Yep. Iris Bannochie created something really special in Barbados. There is so much to experience. Hopefully we'll get more visitors who will love it as much as you! Hope you are able to return. Regards Sharon

    Andromeda Gardens
I’m writing this as I’m sat in the cafe in the gardens with a very fresh fruit juice in hand. This place is an absolute gem. The guide is easy to use on your phone. Although you do have to be careful on some of the paths it is really worth it. The love that is going into this place needs to be seen. Visit- it’s an oasis Finish with a drink . Worth it.
Thank you! It was a real pleasure speaking with you and I'm super pleased you enjoyed your Andromeda Experience. And yes, we love this garden. Iris Bannochie created something truly special. Hopefully we'll get more visitors so others can appreciate Iris' masterpiece. Thanks again. Regards Sharon

    Wonderful botanical garden
One of the most stunning gardens we have ever seen. Well worth a visit if you are in the area. We were lucky to be there on a day that the stream in the garden was running due to the rain, which we were told is a rare occasion. Some of the paths were a bit slippery, so adequate footwear is recommended. Just outside the garden there are great views of the Atlantic coast. We'll be back for sure
Thank you so much for your review. Yep, Andromeda is such a great garden and, without a doubt, up there with the best gardens in the world. Iris Bannochie created something so special and we love it when visitors, such as yourself, fully understand the magnitude of Iris' masterpiece. Looking forward to your return visit. And the stream is still running! 😊 Thanks again. Regards Sharon

Best day out, don’t miss it!!!
We visited these botanical gardens and found them most uplifting. Sharon Cooke, the Director and Curator, is so passionate and dedicated. The App is one of the best I have ever used, very informative and funny in some places! Just listen to Sharon and you will not be disappointed! Take the time to discover this fantastic place for yourself.
Yes! Uplifting is a perfect description. Thank you so much for coming and reviewing. Yes. I love this garden - definitely one of the world's best, and given its context, Andromeda is remarkable. Iris Bannochie created a masterpiece and we attempt to protect her legacy as well as being an inclusive garden for all our communities. We're protecting our unique biodiversity with thoughtful planting and organic gardening. The app was developed and donated by an amazingly gifted person - a modern addition to this great historic space. Plans are to have even more butterflies, composting zones and a garden especially for different abilities. Hope you're able to return and experience even more. Thanks again. Regards Sharon

    Well worth a visit.
Beautiful, interesting botanical garden. Well kept but not manicured. There is WiFi in the entrance area so you can get the helpful app that has a little information about the plants. The app and arrows guide you round the winding pathways or you can just wander! Card payments are accepted.
Thank you! Iris Bannochie's Andromeda Botanic Gardens is something truly beautiful and interesting! So many layers of plants and history combine to make Andromeda a multifaceted experience. Thanks again. We have more projects planned so I hope you're able to return. Regards Sharon

    Educational garden tour, great coffee!
The more academic and informative of the botanical gardens we visited, Andromeda was a thoughtfully assembled experience. The app is a nice addition to the self-guided tour. It's probably the wrong thing to rate them on but the coffee in their restaurant was awesome. Don't travel with a forestry or botany expert. They will get a lot out of it and want to debate the other experts who created the space.
Thank you! Iris Bannochie was a genius and her botanical garden is amazing, with the widest variety of plants in Barbados, including some wonderful trees. We try to protect her legacy as well as being a garden focused on all our communities (tourist, locals and a soon-to-be established garden for wheelchair users and others) and safeguarding our biodiversity, with careful and beautiful planting as well as being completely organic. Andromeda is the only authentic botanical garden in Barbados, mandated to have records of our collection for conservation, research, education and of course display. And what an amazing collection of different gardens we have! Lots to discuss, but not with the legendary Iris Bannochie who died decades ago. The cafe is completely independent of the team that owns and manages the garden. Hopefully Eastside Kitchen will have there own entry so praise for coffee etc. can be directed at Dwayne and Jo! 😊 Thanks again and I hope you're able to return..Guided tours are fabulous and no additional fee. Regards Sharon

Lots to see and a very good cafe'
We have been lucky enough many years ago to stay on several occasions in Andromeda House in the gardens . There have been many changes over the years but all of it to the good, with new areas being cleared and developed. It is a places to look at many unusual plants and also to sit and relax. Having walked around the gardens, it is worth visiting the cafe' for lunch, with quite a wide range of light meals and also drinks. We do still like to visit every time we visit Barbados to see what further changes have been made.
Thank you - for reviewing and being part of our Andromeda journey. 🙏🏾 There'll be even more to see when you return. Next on our list for this year are extending the native plant and butterfly haven in our Ethnobotanical Garden; creating an accessible garden and composting zone; finishing the Ground, celebrating the medicinal plants used by the enslaved; and completing the wildlife zone - the memorial for the fallen bearded fig tree. Loads more! 😊 Eastside Kitchen is independent and has it's own review page. Hope you can post about it there. We look forward to welcoming you back. Thanks again. Regards Sharon.

    Worth a trip
Not as well signposted or publicised as it could be, but worth seeking out. Maybe not as good for dedicated horticulturalists, because information and labelling of specimens isn't great, but for an all round very relaxing, peaceful hour or two it's definitely worth a visit. The dedicated, informative proprietor and her team are working hard on improvements and creation of additional areas. We look forward to seeing their achievements on our return.
Thank you so much for coming and reviewing. Dedicated horticulturists (and others, of course😊) love the 8 acre botanical landscape of Andromeda Botanic Gardens and have described the information provided as extensive and educational. We have literally hundreds of plant labels (for most of our 600 plant species), interpretive signs (for some of the special ones!), the Andromeda app (the best app ever! 😊), plus guided tours are always available at no additional cost (for those wonderful insights that bring the garden to life even more!😊). Looking forward to showing you all we have, and all we will have,😊 when you return. Gentle reminder, you fee gives you unlimited returns for one month so come back now! 😊. Thanks again. Regards Sharon

A fabulous way to spend a few hours. The owner Sharon Cooke happily showed me the humming birds when I couldn't find them. The ticket let's for a month so you can revisit as many times as you want to. Its a beautifully thought out garden with so many surprises.

Visited these gardens Saturday 11 June 2022. I have been to Barbados six times and did not know they existed. They are absolutely beautiful, filled with tropical plants, birds and butterflies. Sharon Cooke gave us a guided tour and her passion and enthusiasm was evident throughout the tour. The entry fee was $30 Barbados dollars (BDS). A taxi from Oistins cost $80 BDS and we took two local buses back to our resort for the cost of $7 BDS.

Local produce, jewellery, arts & crafts also available for sale. Got some lovely jewellery and had lunch. You can take a picnic and sit and eat in the grounds.
Very laid back and peaceful. Definitely worth a visit.

We arrived at around 9:30am and basically had the gardens to ourselves. It was lovely and peaceful. It took us around 2 hours to walk round slowly and look at all the plants and trees. I would recommend scanning the QR code at the entrance which gives you a free guide.

Thank you for coming. Our QR Code now takes you directly to our new Andromeda App - very exciting! And we have a new part of the garden - 2 acres of butterflies and ethnobotany which opened in early July. So much more to explore! Thanks again and I hope you can return. Regards Sharon.

We visited last Friday 25th whilst also dropping into Bathsheba for some surfer spotting and lunch.
We were greeted by a lovely lady (sorry didn't get her name) who was so happy to explain all about the history of the gardens and how they developed before explaining how the on line guide sheet worked. They have wifi so it was easy to download.

We love a guide sheet so we can follow it around, understand what we are looking at and hopefully don't miss anything en route. Whilst a few of the numbered markers were obscured we found our way around without issue.

This garden is a little piece of paradise tucked away from the hustle n bustle of the rest of the island which I urge everyone to visit (it is accessible by bus if you don't drive, call them and they will give you guidance) and support. It was originally created by Iris Banochie back in 1950 and she was definitely a lady who lived before her time searching the world over for plants, shrubs n trees that she could plant here and transform the landscape.
We loved how she had created small gardens within one large garden like the palm tree area for example where there are couple of trees that are on the list of possible extinction!
We also enjoyed sitting and just being, absorbing the sounds and smells around us. Listening to the bird song and watching the wildlife including one little fellow who landed on a leaf above us and reminded us of "Harry" from a very long running Uk programme filmed in the Caribbean.
There are strategically placed seats throughout so plenty of opportunities just to relax n enjoy this beautiful corner of Barbados.

We are NT members back in the UK which means we could have received a discount but tbh we were happy to pay the full price and support this wonderful cause.

Thank you for your review. And thank you for your generosity. We are desperate for support - as you figured out all by yourself! Instead of the guide sheet we now have the Andromeda App. Well, it is still the guide sheet but it is much better than the PDF document. Come back and try it. lol! I'm so pleased that you were able to linger and soak up the beauty and interest in this amazing space. Looking forward to welcoming you again. Regards Sharon.

This is a very unique botanical garden. the trees, plants flowers are nicely displayed. It a multi level garden with stone paver and block steps with handrails. It is very quit and tranquil to enjoy the beauty of Barbados. I am visually impaired but was able to complete our tour. However, if you feel you are unable to walk the garden, I would recommend staying on the high level outside the office and avoid the steps. I did not regret the visit, and enjoyed every minute of it. There are benches available for sopping to rest and observer the park.t

Thank you for your review. I'm pleased you were able to get a good feel of this unique garden. Just for other readers, and you in case you return and prefer to do it, there is a shorter walk that goes through the lower, inner parts of the garden. The normal length is 30-45minutes for this route but again there are places to sit. One visitor spent three hours on the shorter walk, so there are lots of things to experience. Thanks again. Was delighted to visit this beautiful garden on International Women’s Day 2020 and hear all about the inspiring story of Iris Bannochie and how the garden has developed over the last 40 years. A true cultural gem, and as an RHS partner garden was lucky enough to gain free entry as a member. Sharon is highly knowledgeable and runs the whole site extremely well. We spend nearly 2 hours here admiring the plants, the story, enjoying a rum punch and local treasures in the small gift shop. Add Andromeda to your must-visit list, set against the stunning backdrop of Bathsheba.

Thank you for your review. It was a pleasure to read, actually. We still live in a world where the accomplishments of women are underappreciated so thank you for mentioning International Women's Day. In 1950s Barbados (a country without a long gardening tradition) Iris Bayley (her name at the time) was a female, self-taught Barbados scientist who created a botanical garden. This is rare! This garden needs to be more visited and more appreciated. Thank you, once again, for coming and your kind words. Regards Sharon.

Friends who recently visited Barbados recommended visiting Andromeda Botanic Gardens and I'm glad we decided to take their advice. It's a wonderful display of exotic plants and even more impressive that it was created by Iris Bannochie who single handedly created a tropical paradise introducing specimens from around the world.
Additionally the staff have tremendous enthusiasm to retain the dedication and love that was required to create this beautiful oasis.

The magnificence of trees never ceases to amaze, educate and settle me. This botanical gardens in Bathsheba, Barbados is a wonderful way to spend a couple hours of your day. There are bathroom facilities which were clean and well maintained and there is an on site restaurant. A vegan and gluten free option would be a great addition.
We had a chat with Troy, one of the gardeners and Tylon in reception. We also met Sharon who owns these gardens and had a very casual but deep talk about gardens their original owners and history.

This is a beautiful oasis. The gardens are fantastic with interesting plants and garden features. There is also plenty of wildlife to see - we saw the green monkeys, hummingbirds and a couple of tortoises in the garden.

The great thing is that you can get the public bus from Bridgetown to Bathsheba and it will drop you off outside the main entrance, so no need to book an expensive trip

Also a nice cafe and free wifi

Thank you so much for your review. yes! Getting to Andromeda by bus is so easy, plus it's a great way to see the island and interact with people (or just watch and listen!) Iris Bannochie created something quite special at Andromeda. We're trying to build on her legacy and attempting to protect and encourage the wonderful wildlife. Biodiversity is our strength and we are an organic garden, again hoping to give the wildlife a truly safe haven. Many of the monarch butterflies are in their chrysalis so Andromeda will be monarch magic in a couple of weeks! Eastside Kitchen is proving very popular - fresh food, beautifully cooked. One visitor wished he'd found us sooner. He would have had breakfast, gone into the garden, had lunch, gone back into the garden! Thanks again and I hope you are able to return. Regards Sharon

Great visit to this wonderful garden, So very interesting although quite challenging if you are not too good on your legs!! The highlight though had to be the lovely Anna- Lisa who was so friendly and gave us the best welcome and even although the cafe had closed cooked us the best fish and chips with homemade rum punch you could wish for.
Thank you we hope to visit again.
