About
Described by a Royal Horticultural Society judge as 'one of the most unique and outstanding gardens in the world', Andromeda is the original garden of Barbados. It provides visitors with an authentic garden experience and is a wonderful haven for biodiversity. Created as a private botanic garden by Iris Bannochie (three Gold medals at the Chelsea Flower Show, Silver Crown of Merit issued by the Barbadian government and much more) from the 1950s. At that time, Barbados was simply a land exploited for sugar, and a country without a long history of garden creation. Andromeda is rare and unique. Comprised of about 20 connected gardens, the variety of plants and experiences is incredible. There are over 500 different plant species, including over 100 species of trees. It feels very natural, yet is completely woman-made. Wildlife add so much to the enjoyment! Andromeda Botanic Gardens, 'the best garden in Barbados by far', is organic. Mondays, only open for pre-booked Bubble Tours.

Make this one of your first stops on the island.

Really beautiful place, so much information is provided but you can just have a wonder around and look at the pretty foliage. No real restrictions to where you can walk, no keep off the grass signs so was lovely to be able to get up close. Everything is HUGE!
The lady that welcomed us in was so friendly and bubbly.
The cafe is brilliant! Perfect place to have lunch after going to Bathsheba as the restaurant’s there are very expensive, and this is less that 5mins away. The rum punch was lovely, and the whole menu is extremely well priced.

The only reason I have given 4 stars, is the entry fee is expensive I thought. However you can return again, that’s why it’s good to go here first as you can come back again during your holiday if you have a free day - as you definitely would have missed something. They also have a free map of the island so you can plan your trip.

Also, Locals get free entry - I know that doesn’t mean anything to us tourists but it’s a lovely touch and I wish more places in the world offered that to their community.

Flowers and monkeys and trees, oh my!
Jun 2021
On one of the hottest days of our trip, our tour guide suggested the Andromeda Botanic Gardens and we were not disappointed! The shade from the trees was a welcome relief and the trail was well marked with very informative signage. And we were able to skip the wildlife reserve since we saw monkeys everywhere here!

Serene place!

We loved this place. It’s very peaceful. The lady who welcomed us could not have been nicer. Plant life was amazing. It’s just a nice walk around the property (about 1 hour) like you cannot get anywhere else in the world.

Thank you! I love your final sentence 'like you cannot get anywhere else in the world'. Indeed. A show judge described Andromeda as 'one of the most unique and outstanding gardens in the world', so I'm pleased many people such as yourself are in agreement! Thanks again. Regards Sharon.

A beautiful haven
Aug 2021
This is just a lovely, lovely place. A real gem. Anyone wanting to see lovely tropical gardens should come. It is well looked after, with well-marked higgledy-piggledy paths and full of charm. Lovely butterflies too and great sightings of hummingbirds feeding on the heliconias; when I was there if you stood or sat quietly they came every 10 minutes or so. Sharon, who looks after it, was very responsive to my email booking and is hugely enthusiastic and engaging to chat with when I met her.

self-guided, pleasant walk through a beautiful garden. Small gift shop offered interesting gifts. There wasn't a restaurant, but i suspect COVID was the reason for that.

relaxing exploration of the garden
May 2021
My wife and. loved walking through the garden and sitting on a bench at the top to feel the breeze and admire the greenery and colours. It's one of the best activities that we've discovered since arriving on the East coast.

Serene and lovely

My first outing after being released from quarantine was a quiet ramble through these lovely gardens. The staff at the entrance was kind and helpful. I appreciated all the signage — those identifying the plants, of course, but also those explaining the history and science of the gardens.

Amazing

Andromeda is not just a garden it's a splendid peaceful retreat it's a shame that the barbados national trust don't do anything to assist the garden. If you are in barbados go & visit leave a donation help the garden stay open thru these rough times . As the receptionist said donations are accepted via cash , cheques or bank transfers give Andromeda a call for more details 1246433-9384 .

Thank you with all our hearts for your review and your appeal. We have no idea why the Barbados National Trust does so little to fund and promote this outstanding heritage property. Hopefully, Andromeda will survive and not become forgotten and lost. Thanks again. Regards Sharon
