Deer cave is the 2nd largest chamber cave in the world. Its amazing to see all the bats cluster together and in the evening fly out togfly out together for food.
However be prepare to walk inside cave with some up and down steps.

The ginormous size of Deer Cave cannot be explained and can only be appreciated in person. I was told how massive it is, yet I didn’t comprehend until walk inside the entrance mouth of the cave.

The walk to Deer Cave alone was stunning admiring the forest, then walking around the cave was beautiful.

Be sure to be there in the afternoon for the bat exodus which is mind blowing. Watching the millions of bats fly out of the cave in a smoke formation was one of the best natural experiences I’ve witnessed in my life.

Cannot highly recommend Deer Cave enough.

The cave itself is just a major enclosed space. What makes the cave special is the 2 million bats. There are some 8 different species who co habit. They all leave the cave en mass to feed most evenings. The problem for sightseers is there is no standard departure time. It can be from 5.15pm to dusk (7.00pm). So it is possible to go to the viewing area and see nothing as they have left at dusk. The 3 kilometre walk back in the dark is an experience. Pack a torch. You will need it.

This cave is so huge and spectacular! There are also proper walkways, don't remember there were much climbing, probably suitable for most ages and fitness levels. Definitely must visit, just outside of the cave is where you would wait for the bat exodus, which happens anytime between 5.30pm to 6.30pm.

To reach Deer Cave which is the widest passage cave in this area, we need to trek abt 3km from the entrance of the Mulu National Park. The trek is an easy one with a ready made path. However to cover Deer Cave will be another 2Km in and out. In total is 8km walk, which can take 3-4hours in total.

Best to visit Deer Cave after 2.30pm so that once you finish touring Deer Cave and Lang Cave next to it, you will be in time to witness millions of bats leaving Deer Cave to scavange for food before night fall.

The entrance fee per pax is not much; somewhere below rm50 if you go straight to Mulu National Park. But if you ask nearly resort to make the bookings, the cost can be more than rm200 per pax with a tour guide accompanying. So better make your own arrangements at Mulu National Park directly. Infact, the trek to the cave is so easy, you dont really need a tour guide.

At the base of Deer Cave is an open area with seats prepared for tourists to watch the millions of bats leave at approxiately 5.45pm daily. There is a rest room here and it was a really nice surprise to see the toilets are VERY CLEAN with proper water supply, tissue paper and flush that works. Bravo to the management of Mulu National Park !!!

We spent 3 days 2 nights in Mulu and this was not enough time to cover all the activities we wanted to cover. For such a short trip, the highlights were the Deer and Lang Caves, and the Wind and Clearwater caves, majestic and magnificent wonders of nature. We booked all the tours directly through the Mulu National Park website and they were very prompt and efficient in replying emails and confirming bookings. If you are making a trip to Sarawak, it is extremely worth your while to extend your stay and ensure you make a trip to explore and experience the caves in Mulu. Highly recommended to visit at least once in your lifetime, if not more often.
