    Lovely walled garden!
Really enjoyed re-visiting this walled garden yesterday! It's really matured and is both pretty and interesting. Clearly a lot of thought and hard work has gone in to the development, planting and upkeep. Well done everyone! We visited in support of a local charity so were happy to pay an admission fee. However, normally we object to the charge and feel that Archerfield should include free access to the garden for cafe/shop customers.
Thank you for your lovely comments about our garden. We are lucky to have such a talented and experienced garden team. Our garden entry price reflects their hard work and skills. We also offer a yearly pass for only £1 extra you can visit as often as you like for 12months, giving opportunity to see the gardens in every season as it changes. I hope you visit again soon!

Walks wonderful - prices and food not so much!
The walks and scenery around the area are lovely, very relaxing and perfect for families or couples looking to explore. We walked down onto the beach in our loop of the grounds too. The bit that ruins it is the very expensive food menu, chicken burger, chips and potato salad about £20. The little coffee takeaway not any better, £15 for a coffee, carton of juice, sandwich and brownie. The tuna sandwich was just average, and the brownie stale despite it being advertised as bibis which has a good reputation, maybe it was just put out not as fresh as it should be ? Bakery has such a short shelf life it’s important for the staff to know this. Especially when you pay so much. The staff were friendly, the toilets were clean, and it being dog friendly was a good bonus point but I don’t think I’d return for food, maybe a takeaway coffee at most. Prices need to drop to reflect on the standard and quality of what the customer is being served.
Thank you for the kind words about our staff, cleanliness, walks and scenery. We always aim to offer our customers good value and a range of price options and continue to change our menus with the seasons, building on the dishes which work. On our current menu, dishes range from £6 (homemade sausage roll) to £17 (fish & chips) and there are many options to choose from including soups, salads, quiches, brunch items and hot dishes. Mimi's Bakehouse products do have a set shelf life and our team and very rigorous in ensuring these cakes are fresh and they are not carried beyond this.

    A beautiful walk
This is a beautiful estate in which to walk. We walked for hours, went down to a lovely little beach and got lost because we were so enraptured by our surroundings! One less than ideal point however; the cafe food is vastly overpriced and not of good quality at all. It won't stop us from visiting Archerfield again though.
Thank you for your review Valerie. We are lucky to be situated in such a beautiful location. We do our best to offer Garden Café customers quality food and value for money. Our menu has changed since your visit and we hope when you return you will be pleasantly surprised by both the prices and the range of dishes, many which use produce grown in our Gardens.

    Another lovely visit and lunch.
Another lovely visit and lunch in the restaurant. Food quality is great and I think for the cost is plentiful. Plenty of seating available. Drinks are pricey but they do have plenty of free tap water available. Lovely shop and farm shop. Ideal for families as well as couples . Beautiful setting.
Thank you so much for your fantastic review, it is much appreciated and we hope you will visit again soon.

    Nice coffee shambolic service
Coffee shop here produce is great. Service is shocking. Too many staff behind the counter dithering about doing anything but serve customers. I was in a big queue and the only person who could take drinks orders was the girl on the till. So this person is taking payment for everything whilst the other staff are standing around waiting for the order. Result big queue, customers standing round the till waiting for drinks to be prepared slowing whole process down. Shambolic. When it arrived it was very good. Change the system!

    Ruined by refurbishment
We aren't local so this was our first visit since refurb. First off, the fairy trail is still the same and our daughter loves it still and the staff are helpful and friendly. However the place has lost its soul. It wasn't broken and nothing I saw today was an improvement. Where is the brewery now? On our last visit to East Lothian when Archerfield was closed, we discovered Fenton Barn. This has taken over for us the role of decent cafe and source of deli / local foods. The cafe always was expensive at Archerfield but it was acceptable as a treat when it was table service. Not now for queueing up and waiting! We didn't go in. The seating area looks larger than it used to but also more crammed in. The food hall section seemed to have less local produce and less quality and seemed to be filled with far more generic expensive garden centre stock. Everything felt crammed in and overfilled. There is little space for customers to move around in. Nothing appealed. Previously I would have filled a basket easily. I remember the garden being a nice half hour wander, but I certainly wouldn't pay £4 each to go in. There may be similar gardens charging similar prices, but it is competing with the East Lothian coast and countryside. We'll probably try again to see if the experience improves, but looks like Fenton Barn is the way forward for future visits.
We are sorry to read you feel our business has been ruined by the recent refurbishment. We are really happy with the new building, with bigger Garden Café, larger retail space and all new plant shop. The brewer who leased the brewery space decided to close their business. Our stock levels fluctuate over the course of the year, changing with the seasons. There is always plenty of space to move around. If you visit again, we hope you enjoy it.

Cafe great for adults, but not recommended for kids
Archerfield is a lovely spot for families but the cafe is realistically far too posh for young kids and given it's positioned as a family friendly spot, it feels like a real oversight. 1 very slim pancake with a few bits of bacon cost around £6, extortionate for what it was. A chicken burger which we had on our last visit was lovely but again far too "posh" for the kids. Would benefit from reconsidering their menu and recognising they need lighter bites and simpler choices for the kiddies.
Hi Becky, Our Garden Café menu has a wide number of dishes, both hot and cold, and covers a range of price points. We constantly review what works and what doesn't and constructive feedback from customers is always appreciated to help us inform new menus. Our next menu will launch in the Spring and features a great mix of new brunch and lunch items including new hot sides such as Caprese Salad & Tempura Broccoli for those who wish a lighter bite. For children there will be steak pie, fish & chips, chicken burger, plus pancakes, brioche and waffles. Soups, salads and cold items like quiche will also feature. I hope you will enjoy the range of options to choose from when you next visit.

Lovely place to spend a morning
Lovely coffee/brunch cafe with friendly staff. Great scones and the biggest softest doughnuts ever. There's also a deli with a different variety of food/drinks on offer and a lovely selection of goods in there large gift shop. Outside they have a large selection of garden plants/pots We visit here normally once a week and well worth a visit.
Thank you for being such loyal customers! And for leaving us this lovely review.

Just had a first visit to the Garden Cafe and it will be the last, 3 people, tea for 2, 1 coffee, 3 tasteless cup cakes, Price £18.10, scandalous, this is what gives hospitality a bad name. What a rip off.
Give this place a miss, there are much plenty better places in Aberlady Gullane and North Berwick

Hi Michael CC C, Sorry to learn that you didn’t enjoy your visit with us, we try to keep our prices inline with other local businesses. However, we will be looking into our prices and certainly pass on your comments regarding the cupcakes to Mimi’s Bakehouse. Thank you for leaving a review as feedback is important to us.

I originally posted this review under the Garden Café but everyone seems to posting their café reviews here so I’ll repeat it here.

The café has a very disorganised system with a very long wait standing in a queue to order (we waited for 15 minutes), My wife ordered a beef sandwich and I ordered a hot dog. The sandwich was handed over and we were given a flag for our table as the hot dog would be brought separately. Twenty five minutes came and went and still no sign of the hot dog. By now my wife had finished her sandwich, which she described as disappointing with hardly any beef, and I’d finished my drink.

I went up to the counter and asked what had happened to my hot dog. The man apologised and asked where we were sitting, I indicated our table in the corner. Five minutes later a girl appeared from the kitchen with my hot dog and took it out into the garden where she wandered round all the tables before finally coming to our table.

The whole performance (lack of performance?) was absolutely typical of this café. We had in fact stopped going after similar experiences in the past and this was a last chance for it. In addition to the generally shambolic nature of the business, the menu is very restricted and overpriced for what it is. I wouldn't recommend going out of your way to edt here and we certainly won’t be back.

Hi Andy, Thank you for taking the time to write your review. We have went under a full renovation and change of service so we are still finding our feet a little. I'd like to echo the apoligies of the staff member on the day but I'm glad this was rectified quickly. We have now added an extra till for busier days which has reduced queue times. I hope you visit us again in the future.

We have been visiting for years and the last visit it was closed for a major set of changes. So they now have an extensive outside eating area with a fancy wooden roof structure and windbreaks with clear panels and outside heating. There are toys and structures for children and it is fully enclosed. We didn't eat here but did notice it is now a self service but with restaurant prices. The old brewery has gone and opened up a big area that looks like a smart garden centre, but they have retained the deli counter. They now sell plants, quality pots etc etc all at eyewatering prices, but there is little competition in this area. There is now a charge for looking round the walled garden when it was previously free. I guess they are trying to recoup the cost of all this investment.

Hi Dave, thank you for your review. We are delighted with our new space, following extensive refurbishment. The newly introduced self service set up allows for a faster customer journey with less wait times for food. Prices are based on raw cost of ingredients and a standard markup applies across all food items. Introducing an entry fee for our Gardens has been planned for a long time, and now after 6 years of hard work and investment we believe the Gardens have reached a level of maturity which is worthy of a charge. Fees only apply from March to October and next year we will introduce a season pass to offer regulars further value for money.

I was excited to return to Archerfield Walled Garden after its closure for refurbishment. First impressions are good - better use is made of the space with the extended shop at the entrance & the new garden shop is delightful to browse (but expensive). 2 trips to the cafe with friends have been disappointing though with confused & erratic service both indoors & out. The new outdoor space in inviting but the metal chairs are extremely uncomfortable & clearly designed to have cushions. Food prices suggest Archerfield Walled Garden are pitching themselves as a superior venue but both service & food need to improve.

We decided to try the ‘new’ Archerfield cafe (we have frequented the cafe since it first opened but time and time again we were disappointed) so hadn’t returned for quite some time. We had high hopes and expectations. Again, Archerfield has failed the customer experience test. Decor is gorgeous, customer service is awful as per usual, although the young chap on the checkout was friendly and efficient, however the usual girl, who has worked there for yo ears would benefit from a customer service course (possible cafe manager) she was full of bad attitude and completely unhelpful.
We checked the website to see what was on offer and it said breakfast was available…by that they actually meant “no selection”, coffee and cakes on offer only. The flies on the selection of uncovered cakes on offer wasn’t exactly appealing, then again neither was lifting a lid which everyone has touched (COVID is a thing Archerfield!). Waited on the drinks, only for the girl not to place them on my tray, but to place them on the counter which meant having to rejig the tray to pick up the drinks… not even a “enjoy your overpriced coffee Miss”… won’t be back.
Not sure how they can get it wrong year after year….

Hi Rethw, I'm sorry to learn you were disappointed on your recent visit. We are currently operating during a time of staffing shortages across the industry. This is the reason our Garden Café offering is sometimes limited. We have attempted to keep our comms up to date, however, on this occasion it appears updating the website slipped through the net. I apologise that you arrived intending to have breakfast and then found out it wasn't available. The majority of cakes are covered up, however we shall look at whether we need to cover all of them. Regarding the counter top, it is unfortunate that by the till, the counter is too wide for staff to comfortably put coffees onto a tray. As a result, customers are often ushered beyond the till where there is a narrower counter and coffees can be comfortably placed onto the tray. We will look at explaining this to customers going forwards. This has been something of a challenging year in which to operate and we know there is more work to be done. We hope 2022 will be smoother and we will be able to operate with a full team and full Café offering.

Tried the cafe today after seeing lovely photos on the Facebook page. Tuna sweetcorn sandwich was served on dry bread - half a jacket potato with cheese and tomato cost £8 and was lukewarm . Macaroni cheese under seasoned and stodgy. Safe to say we won’t be returning.

Went to the Santa experience today and the first part was good with the story and a little acting from a couple of elves. When we went into Santa’s grotto they just wanted us in and out asap. Santa didn’t ask my child what they wanted for Xmas, I had to prompt my child to tell him and when he was still thinking he was handed his gift and we were ushered out the door. I’d expect a little more attention paid when spending £20 on tickets for an experience that ended up lasting a total of 20 minutes. The 20 minutes included wait time getting in to see Santa as well. It was ok and my son liked it but I won’t travel to come back in a hurry.

Hi Cindy, I am sorry to hear you didn't enjoy our Santa Experience. We pride ourselves on delivering first class events and believe the Santa Experience is unique as it includes real actors and a fun theatrical element, as well as the opportunity to meet Santa in his Sorting Office plus a gift. I take onboard your feedback about the questions you felt should have been asked when your child met Santa and will pass this on to the team running the event. Our ticket prices (£14 per child, which includes one adult) are competitive when compared against other similar events.

This cafe looks the part but is not being run properly at all. All style no substance. Firstly, dirty tables covered in used plates cups and crockery, all round the place the whole time we were there. Mac and cheese served to other customers all left, looked like boiled macaroni no sign of cheese. We cancelled our order of that quickly. It takes forever to get served and it is expensive for that lack of quality. When you complain you get a snippy response but clearly they are paying no attention to their bad reviews, they either don’t care or are not capable of addressing them. We only wish we had read them before we visited. We will not be making the same mistake again until their reviews improve hugely.
A couple of the staff in the shop were friendly and helpful the cafe staff might take a leaf from their book.

Hi Reedlichtie, I am pleased to read that you like our new look. However, I am disappointed to see you did not enjoy your time with us. Like many other hospitality businesses just now, we are struggling for staff, and I can only apologise if you felt you were spoken to in an inappropriate way. We take all feedback on board and make changes accordingly. Thank you for taking the time to leave a review.

Service was slow despite an army of servers and the place not that busy. We had ordered carrot and cocoanut soup but was identical to tasteless brown lentil. A tiny macaroni and cheese seemed to have been made with cornflour instead of cheese. Small children running out of control made the nerves jangle

One of my favourite locations in East Lothian and delighted it's back open again. I note the switch from table service to counter service has helped the speed of service, and there's more variety of food available. Being able to sit outside in the sunshine, under the new terrace, really helped to cap off a great experience. The memory of the delicious carrot cake with the mouth watering icing will stay with me for a long time!
