About
The city’s first true urban winery and the city heart of the A.Retief wine label. Urban Winery Sydney is in The Entertainment Quarter in Moore Park and includes a full functioning open winery, a cellar door and wine bar, and an event space. It’s a place to enjoy and discover the very best of NSW wine and produce, including our very own A.Retief wines hand-crafted on site.

The signage lured us in, seems like a great idea, a winery in the entertainment quarter but the execution was a bit lacking.

We were shown a list of the wines but not offered a tasting, so we went for a bottle of Pinot Gris as the per glass price was I think $12 and the bottle $40 and there were 3 of us. I think if you expect people to spend $40 a bottle they should be offered a tasting first, especially if you are calling yourself a winery.

The winery had some ambience with all the barrels but could do with some heating in the middle of winter, a nice fireplace would look great and be a focal point.

The wine was rather one dimensional and had a chemically taste which was not pleasant. There was no follow up from the guy at the bar to see how we were enjoying it, and possibly sell more wine. Some cheese platters or savoury snacks would be a good addition to the fare on offer.

In conclusion it wasn’t a bad start to our evening but we moved on after one drink.

A work colleague initially recommended that I visit the Urban Winery Sydney in their brand new premises conveniently located within the Entertainment Quarter Sydney. Not knowing a whole lot about the facility, my wife and I thought we would drop into the wine bar for a pre-game glass of Shiraz before the Swans game. Initially looking for just a decent glass of wine, we were pleasantly surprised to find out that this is an actual working winery in the heart of the city!

Not only are the wines absolutely fantastic within a hip relaxed setting, this is where the wine is actually made with grapes sourced from various cold climate regions in NSW. There are winery tours, blending master classes, cellar door sales and wine tasting experiences all available which actually blew my mind. They even hire the venue for Weddings and corporate functions!

Whilst there I was lucky enough to meet the chief winemaker Alex Retief who was a wealth of knowledge on all things wine. Alex was extremely approachable and you could tell how honestly passionate he is about NSW wines and produce just by talking to him. Going forward this will be my new choice of venue to taste and drink wine but I am very much looking forward to my booked master blending class next week.

Pro Tip: Make sure you try the charcuterie board!

I hosted my 30th Birthday lunch for 40 people at Urban Winery in their new location at the Entertainment Quarter. I can't speak highly enough of it as a venue- we had a long table within the ceiling-high wine barrels, the space is amazing. The table was set up with hessian down the middle and little pots of flowers. The staff were very friendly, and of course the wines were delicious. We played our own playlist through their soundsystem and they were very happy to cater for any of our needs. Also had Studio Neon as a caterer (who Urban winery suggested) who I can also highly recommend- great value for money all round.
Will definitely be going back for a drink at the bar also- people were having a cheese platter and a glass of wine in the bar and it looked beautiful. Thanks Urban Winery!

I purchased a Virtual Wine Tasting pack with cheese/charcuterie platter for 2. There were 4 small pieces of cheese, all dried out, and the meats were also completely dried out - these items had to be thrown out. The wines were not very nice either. I emailed the business as soon as the items were delivered and received no response. Such a waste of time and money, do not purchase this experience.

Went to Urban Winery Sydney recently for a wine tasting and had a blast. They truly have brought the country to the city!

Alex, the winemaker was knowledgeable and friendly during the tour and the wines/food that followed were thoroughly enjoyed. Not just an activity for tourists, as i've lived in Sydney my whole life and stumbled across this Gem. A must visit.

My daughter and I visited for the wine tasting, the setup of the winery was great, Sam was very knowledgeable and the wines were amazing especially the Chardonnay which I normally would not consider. Highly recommended and will definitely go back again.

We had a great time at the Chef X Winemaker Long Lunch in June. Alex Retief ran us through the winemaking process and then we tried 7x wines from the A.Retief label alongside a four-course meal prepared by celeb chef Sian Redgrave.

We received gift vouchers for this experience. The setup is good with casks and vats on display. Alex explained the wine making process in layman’s terms. We all listened whilst drinking a glass of his wine. The highlight was of course stomping the grapes. And of course the bottle of wine each at the end.

Very disappointing. The wine was not bad (but in Sydney it’s not hard to find a nice drop). But nothing else was very pleasant.

Seating was not comfortable (no one likes being perched at a high bench with their back to the room in a chair with no back on it).

The room was freezing - I wore my coat the whole time.

The meat platter was the most disgusting charcuterie I’ve ever had. We were served a stale $1 bread roll with a whole salami cut in half with the wrapping still on it (not even sliced). Then given only one sub par knife to cut both the cheese (which was the only redeeming feature) and the meat. Both of my friends woke sick the next morning from the salami. This platter needed olives, eggplant, sun dried tomato, hummus - anything. But two slabs of cheap meat and three chunks of cheese with not enough crackers? It was just foul.

Service however, was warm and friendly. Servings were generous. But this was not enough of a redeeming feature to warrant a return.

I’d never return as there are better places at the quarter to eat and more comfortable places to drink. The entertainment quarter is in desperate need of a quirky comfy wine bar. Sadly, this missed the mark by a mile.
