About
Located on Mobile Point, at the end of Scenic Fort Morgan Peninsula, the site has a diverse number of activities to make your vacation a memorable one. Preceded by another fort, Fort Bowyer during the War of 1812, Fort Morgan is a Third System masonry fort built between 1819 and 1833. Standing guard where the bay meets the Gulf of Mexico, the fort played a significant role in the Battle of Mobile Bay in August 1864. Used intermittently through the Spanish American War, World War I and World War II, the site showcases the evolution of seacoast fortifications and adaptations made by the U.S. Army for the defense of the country.

Don't expect any programs, tours, or even safety. NOT like it used to be...
Jun 2021
I have been visiting Fort Morgan for the past 17 years during family vacations and have always had a positive experience until now.

It is clear that no one is making safety inspections or doing general upkeep of the fort. The steps leading up to the fort walls are cracking and breaking in several spots. All of the short wooden walkway bridges in the inner areas of the fort are soft, rotting, have loose boards, or worse yet, HAVE A HOLE for visitors and their children to fall through and break a leg. The hole in the walkway (pictured here) was the last straw during our visit. The walkways are in the darkest rooms of the fort so holes are near invisible and extremely dangerous. The pretty houses that are also in the park look like they are about to fall down. I understand hurricane damage, but I do not understand why there appears to have been zero work to repair them since the hurricane.

In addition to the rundown and damaged condition of everything we saw during our visits, there were no guided tours and apparently no Memorial Day programs. Such a disappointing, and potentially dangerous, visit. I have reached out to the group Alabama Historical Commission that runs the site, but have yet to receive a reply.

Interesting piece of history
May 2021
We loved this sight - we did all self guided (I'm not even sure if guides were available) and that was fine. So many places to explore and if you're looking to take some interesting photos my wife took a ton of our daughter's graduation photos here (some of the backdrops even I'll admit are something else). Lots of history to read up on in certain areas - I feel very fortunate that my daughter loves going to places like this - we spend hours searching throughout old forts like this (and yet once again we forgot to bring flashlights lol sometimes something stronger than the phone flashlight would be nice).

We got there early right as they were opening up - was nice to be able to explore so much of it without running into other people. By the time we left a couple hours later the parking lot was much more full and there was a line of cars at the entrance - so if you can get there early I would suggest that.

Well presented
May 2021 • Family
The entire site is well presented. For a family of 4 (2 & 2) the cost of admission was very reasonable, $20. The museum isn’t large and doesn’t take long to navigate. The views from the top of the fort themselves are very nice.

The beach access is very nice. We saw several pods of dolphins while talking a nice long walk and saw a lot of shells on our way as well.

Public restrooms could be better.

Super interesting

Finally decided to go check out the Fort after years of visiting. My husband wasn’t as excited but was a good sport. The museum was ok but the Fort itself is pretty cool. My husband was much more enthusiastic after we started exploring the grounds & fort. It was a nice surprise for both of us. Definitely a positive experience & a nice 2 hour visit to really check it all out. Weather was perfect.

Worth the Trip
May 2021
It takes a little over 30 minutes to reach Fort Morgan Historic Site from Gulf Shores but it is worth the trip. This well preserved fort offers a lot of history, great scenic views and some really unique architecture. I'm glad that we took the time to come visit this historic site.

We decided to drive and see fort morgan. Very interesting and you can walk the grounds at your own pace. Lots to take pictures of. The beach is beautiful. Admission fee for us was only $5 as we got 1 senior rate and 1 free for retired military.

This was a great stop for our afternoon! You’d never know it was there behind the grass. A nice self guided tour with information is provided.

I had a great morning visiting Fort Morgan! I think the excitement of being out of the house during the current pandemic was shared by many as I couldn’t help noticing visitors were from many states based on their license plates! The fee to enter is $8 and it is worth it. Once you pay, you are given a pamphlet that explains the detail of the fort, then you are free to explore at your own pace. There are many rooms that you are free to explore at your own will (mostly empty, but historic). I had a great time spending the morning outside exploring the historic fort!

Historical Value 5/5, Facility 3/5
Mar 2021
Fort Morgan Historic Site is full of great history. It reminded me a lot of nearby Fort Pickens (Florida). The little museum has lots of great artifacts but signage and arrangement could be “freshened” up a bit. The restrooms are in poor condition and outdoor signage/plaques are lacking. It’s maintained by the State of Alabama and in my opinion a little more money needs to be directed to them for upkeep. However, if you’re a military or history buff a visit is warranted if in the area. Fort Gaines is just across the bay too. We did not visit it as the ferry would have to be utilized and it was very busy.
