Grum Ma's House is off the beaten path, but well worth the visit. Donald is a delightful man whose head is packed with knowledge. He also has a love of his country and culture. We even found out we shared a Scottish heritage! We just showed up, but it probably would have been better if we called first. We weren't quite sure what to expect, hoping my 83 year old mother would do OK with standing as he talked, but we sat around a table, which was perfect for her. He just began to talk about history, culture and politics. We got to sample fever grass tea and learned about bush medicine. Also learned about Junkanoo. I get the impression he'll take as little or as much time as you'd like. Definitely not a canned tour! It was one of the highlights of my trip. There's no fee, but donations are appreciated.

This tour is so much bang for your vacation buck. We enjoyed about five hours of thought-provoking conversation about the history and culture of Freeport, plus a delicious lunch with our guide and our chef du jour. I don't think there was ever a time where we asked a question that our guide, Donald, didn't have an insightful and knowledgeable response.
I have been to Freeport multiple times via various cruises, and here are my perspectives:
1) Sometimes you book a tour through the cruise line and it's you and eighteen other people. There is no conversation and no time for questions. Donald's tour is the polar opposite: it was just the two of us and Donald, and there was an abundance of time to ask questions and share thoughts throughout the tour.
2) Sometimes you decide on a spur-of-the-moment driving tour when you're on vacation, and the driver is terrifying and cares nothing for his life or your own. Donald's vehicle was comfortable and clean, and I felt safe with him driving.
3) When you book outside of your cruise line or your hotel's excursions, you may wonder if the person you're meeting in a foreign country will murder you. I can say with confidence that Donald did not murder me, nor did he attempt to.
4) Politics might come up! I am a little bit more laissez-faire about other people's beliefs than my partner is. If you are touring with someone who is passionate and argumentative about politics or social issues (as I was) I advise letting Donald know, so he can tailor his conversational topics to avoid touchy subjects.
5) I am a prodigiously sized lady, and all the accommodations were totally comfortable and generous.
If you're someone who doesn't want to go shopping or fall off a zip line or whatever other people do when they are on vacation, I fully endorse this tour as a way to learn new things about Freeport, try delicious authentic food, and support a small business owner.

Naomi, I enjoyed every moment of our encounter and hosting you both was truly enriching to meet two young people who are passionate about life and their beliefs. Touring with you was one of the hightlights of our year and it shows that there is always a reward in giving and sharing oneself. Thank you for you very detailed perspective of our tour. We appreciate your graciousness.

Easily the best experience we had in Freeport!
The cultural center is a few miles away from the Lucaya hotels, and it is well worth the visit. Although Freeport is a lovely, relaxing city, most of what we saw was designed for tourists and we didn't get much of a chance to experience Bahamian culture. SOOO glad we took the time to visit Donald and the Cultural Center! Donald is very passionate and knowledgeable about passing on the history and culture of the island.
My fiance and I spent about an hour and a half at the house, and we could have spent much more time there. We learned about the history of the Bahamian people, past government officials, Junkanoo, bush medicine, and music.
It's free to tour the house, donations are appreciated but not even asked for (I couldn't even find a donation jar). Next time we visit Freeport, we will definitely return and spend more time at the house. There is also a Bahamian cooking demonstration and meal that you can schedule in advance- I wish we would have had more time to do this!

I can't say enough by Grum Ma's House and Donald. This was the most fun, educational, engaging, personal tour that I have ever been on! Donald has a large amount of information concerning the history and culture of the Bahamas and everything else you could thing of. He is very likeable and a whole day flew by before we even knew it! He will stop wherever you want for pictures, no matter where! Go, go, go, go....this is well worth your trip and your time!!! (Lunch was awesome too!)

Hope that you are enjoying this season of joy celebrating the birth of our Lord. Al the best to you in your travels and may they be always exciting and filling. Thank you. Donald

Can't say enough about this little gem. Donald is well-spoken and a wealth of information. He began speaking of Bahamian history and politics, then moved on to "bush medicine", culture and Junkanoo. He even made "fever grass" tea for us to try ( fever-reducer and anti-inflammatory properties) that is safe to drink daily...he even brought us guava-duff, a dessert made by his wife. There are many items to see in this house, and he even has Junkanoo outfits on display that you can take photographs with. Donald is a great conversationalist, and loves to share Bahamian history...easily spent a few hours here without realizing it! Don't miss it! No listed admission fee, but donations graciously accepted.

Leo & Val,
I remembered your names. It was great to be in your company and I enjoyed sharing our culture as much as your sharing your self. Thank you for your kind consideration and for stopping in because you wanted to know more about us. Thank you very much.

This place rocks in a casual island way. They have lots of colorful and interesting Junkanoo Festival costumes to view. The guide shares a wealth of information about bush medicine and you can get a feel for old time Bahamian culture if you take an hour to "get into" the place. Entry is by donation.

Culturevulture94 thank you for your great review. Without guests like you who spend the time at our place makes it all worth while. I have now repaired the sound so there is added value to the Junkanoo excitement. There is nothing like hearing the different instruments, natural and man made as they compliment the vibrant the colours of the costumes. Thank you.

From the outside Grum Ma's house seems small, but the knowledge inside is huge. Donald, who founded the centre is a fascinating source of information. I learnt so much about the islands, the people and their culture. There is no charge for the visit, but you will willingly find yourself leaving a donation to the centre. Well worth leaving yourself some time to spend here.

I appreciate your generosity in spending time at Grum Ma's House. To have travelled from so far a place and find us in the middle of almost nowhere was a blessing to me indeed. I know that your travels now will be more fulfilling and the adventure will have been worth the journey.

Do yourself a favor and visit Grum Ma's House when you're in Freeport. Donald is a great guy and will give you a great over view of the Bahamian life and culture as well as some history. At first it seemed like the taxi drivers weren't quite sure where it was. Once we mentioned Donald to them they knew right were to go. It seems like everyone we talked to in Freeport knew Donald.
Grum Ma's is located in a residential area next to a church so you get to see what real life is like in the Bahamas. Donald was so good with my kids who are 6 and 8 as well as my 17 year old. He has kids of his own so he know :)
I could go on and on but this is the kind of place you really should just experience for yourself.

We had an excellent time on our tour with Donald and would do it all over again. It was great that we got to experience the food, people and culture and wished we could have stayed longer. Was awesome that we learned about the Junkanoo Festival, which I have seen in years past, and had no idea what I was watching at the time. Donald was so personable and we hope to keep in touch with him and hope to go back to Freeport soon.

Amy it was indeed a pleasure to host you and you family. Having guests who are gracious and interested in seeing the island as opposed to just the tourist thing is always appealing and makes this experience well worth it . Thank you and do come again. Donald

What would be the best way to get to Grum Ma's House from the cruise port? Should Donald be contacted before to notify him when we intend to visit?
Written April 7, 2015
You can use taxis from the cruise port to get to Grum Ma's House. yes it is a good idea to contact Donald before intended visit through the email.

Grum Ma's House is located next to St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church in the settlement of Hunter's Grand Bahama. It is 10 minutes from the Freeport Harbour on the way to the city of Freeport off West Sunrise Hwy by way of Pinder's Point or Hawksbill or just outside of South Bahamia. If you travel from Lucaya along Sunrise Hwy to Ranfuly Circus (Burger King) follow the Mall south to first left which is Pinta Gate. Follow Pinta Ave pass circle 7 streets on the left to Arberdeen First left takes you to Hunter's.
