I went to rent a full set of scuba equipment in order to inspect a boat and ended up signing for a Rescue Diver course. It was a great experience with Fred and Melinda providing all that I needed to achieve both. I had to put some effort in covering all the training material and I can attest that I have been thoroughly tested on my knowledge. The practical part involved Fred sharing lots of his experience around dealing with emergency situations during diving and how to be practically effective in assisting divers in distress. We had to perform the typical rescues for most diving incidents and I would recommend this to any diver, just so they know what to do if something happens.

If your a diver or want to be one I would highly recommend you contact Grand Bahama Scuba located at ocean reef yacht club in Freeport.

Fred and Melinda run the shop and dive boat operation located next to the main pool.

Their shop is small but their personalized service, support, and local knowledge and experience make this an exceptional concierge level experience

If your doing multiple dives they will wash and store your equipment between dives and even set it for you if you like so you show up and your gear is on the boat ready to go if you like

Most important is their local knowledge

I don’t write many reviews but the exceptional experience my wife and I had this week with them prompted me to write this

Enjoy

We haven’t dived the Bahamas in a while and Grand Bahama Scuba did not disappoint! Fred and Melinda are so knowledgeable and are great to work with. Justin and Chestla did a great job taking care of us as well. We felt so lazy as they made our dives true effortless. Can’t wait to come back again. We will! We highly recommend diving with these folks.

One of only a few places open and doing daily dives in the post-Covid/low tourist season.

Would definitely go with them again as they are safety conscious, but also no so rigid you can't go and safely explore something that caught your eye, or stop and just look at things. Only sorry I couldn't do more dives, I should have been more organised but I also didn't realise how great the diving would be. Warm water, 15-20m visibility, almost all the tropical fish you can find in the Bahamas, and of course sharks in the wild.

The safest, most calm and relaxing experience. A terrific time with Fred and Melinda and their crew Justin, Chestla & Cordae. Gave me the recovery I needed from my stroke. From new divers just getting certified to experienced divers with 1000's of dives, we have always trusted they're judgement and advice.

I came to Freeport to Scuba and I must say this scuba dive shop was awesome! Fred and Melinda did a great job answering all questions and took us to great dive spots. They knew lots of history of the dive sites and the area. Justin and Chestla were great crew! They took care of us on the boat, cleaned our gear nightly and had a positive attitude. No regrets on choosing them. I would dive with them again! Highly recommend them!

Diving with Grand Bahama Scuba has hands down been the best diving experience that I have had in my 44 years of diving around the world. They are caring and wonderful guides. I don't even have to put on my gear. Everything is taken care of. The dive sites are amazing! Their photographer is fabulous! I cannot say enough good things about this dive business. I recommend them to everyone!! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!!!!!!!

Just terrible. The couple who run it seem nice enough, but we went out on the boat with 2 (very young) "divemasters" - one of them was nice enough but the other seemed like he was annoyed we'd ripped him away from a day on the Xbox or something. Couldn't have cared any less if he tried.

We were fairly new divers, just two of us on the boat. Jumping into the water initially he failed to help me check everything was in place properly (I know this is my responsibility but I'm a fairly new diver and it had been a while since my last trip so would have been nice to have had some help so I didn't have a big struggle when I landed in the water).

The dive itself was terrible, we saw nothing. It was like a wasteland. Barely any coral, let alone fish. It's the Bahamas for goodness sake, it can't be that hard to find a decent dive site. Upon returning to the surface I sat on the end of the boat. The other "divemaster" took my weight belt from me. And, displaying the lack of attention I'd gotten used to on this trip, let the heavy metal belt buckle fall square on my head. It was agony and he didn't even notice.

Oh yes, also on the returning journey I felt queasy, so sat quietly trying not to be sick. This lead him to LAUGH at me.

Finally, when I told the owners the hotel we were staying in, they did nothing but slag off the dive center there. I thought this was very unprofessional "You do one dive with them and you'll want to come back to us". Actually, the guys at our hotel's dive center were fantastic, first class and I had my most enjoyable dives yet. I cannot praise them highly enough. Needless to say, I did not want to step foot anywhere near this dive outfit ever again.

Yeehaa. etc.

It was interesting to read the reviews for this dive operation. A lot of very good reviews and a few who really didn't like them. They are probably all correct for reasons I will try to outline below.

Firstly I'm a reasonably experienced scuba diver with an AOW cert and I've dived a number of tropical locations (Maldives, Barbados, St Maarten, Dahab, Goa, Australia) although I primarily dive cold water at home. So take my opinion for what it is worth based on how well that profile compares to yours.

Keep in mind tropical dive operations tend to be a little more laid back since the water is warm and visibility is generally better. Take it from me diving in 50 deg F water in a drysuit with 10-15ft visibilty tends to make you somewhat more anxious and your dive planning/briefing is more focused.

Overall this operation falls somewhere in the middle of the range I've seen for tropical dive operations. My somewhat random list of attributes follows:

Service: Good. If you are diving with them on multiple days they will clean and hang up your gear for you every day (except for the last day). They were helpful in setting up weights and they will also set up your BCD/Regulator with a fresh tank before each dive (although I prefer to do that myself). I noticed one reviewer complained about having to clean their own gear. In my experience having to clean your own is the norm. Having your gear cleaned for you is the exception.

Dive Briefing: Okish. The dive briefing covered the general site conditions, what to do and the required safety stops. The safety stops deserve a mention for being the best protocol I've ever experienced, very conservative. What was less good was lack of establishing good buddy teams and ensuring there was a DM with each team/group. This was not always done. The lack of a buddy didn't bother me especially given the untaxing conditions but it isn't good protocol.

General attitude: Be engaged. What I mean by this is Fred comes across as being a little disinterested sometimes. I would say it is more that in 16000+ dives he's pretty much seen everything. However if you engage him in an intelligent discussion you end up picking up a lot of interesting information. In particular his knowledge of the sea life and fish behavior is tremendous.

Equipment: Could do better. I had one tank O ring with a slight leak through one dive and I picked up another during my own predive inspection. Inspection of tank O rings is something basic that should happen each day with replacement of worn ones.

Diving: Excellent. Lots of good sites and coral. I did enjoy shark junction and also the variety of natural reefs and wrecks. If you ask Fred to show you some of the more interesting and unusual coras/fish he will oblige.

I gave an overall average rating although for beginners in scube I'd say it would be higher. I would have given them a Very Good rating other than for the equipment concerns.

I am an experienced diver and traveler, this was my fist visit to this operation & my first trip advisor report. My buddy & I booked largely due to excellent reviews on trip advisor, which compelled my to create this report. I suppose that my expecations should have been lower based upon our pre-trip correspondence, which was timely, but minimally helpful. For instance, this operator does not run on Saturday - fine - so we asked if they could recommend another provider to take us out and they declined to do so. Really ? You've been on the island for 20 years and you can't give me a recommendation for a day that you're closed ?

It was just my buddy and I and another buddy pair on the first day and we were never asked if we had any preferences to location, special needs, nor were we given any dive briefing other than the name of the location and bare minumum of direction. Once we were back on board we were never asked how our dive was, if we needed anything or any actions I would consider "normal" for this type of operation.

That evening my buddy and I discussed the day and we both had the same thought - that we were basically a bother to the operator. We were with the boat for a few days - we would have moved to another operation but we had pre-paid. During the time we noted that the owner seemed to be more friendly with groups that were there for longer periods - and not slightly so. We also observed the owner mocking another pair of divers while they were below and discussing other operators in what I consider to be a less then professional fashion.

I would never dive with this operation again and I was dissapointed on every level except for the diving itself which was superb. I am glad that so many people seem to have had a positive experience, maybe for beginner divers taking lessons or for groups staying for an extended period of time the operation is more suitable.
