We took the kayak tour through Lucayan National Park. It was great. The cave was really cool
We also enjoyed kayaking through the mangroves in a tandem kayak. The upside down jellyfish are hard to spot, you have to be looking for them the whole time. But it was a beautiful trip. Our tour guide was Sam; he was really knowledgeable and funny. We loved our lunch at Garden of the Groves Cafe. Gold Rock Beach was also a highlight. We would recommend this tour to anyone who wants to see the island and who can kayak for 90+ minutes.

The wife and I went on Carnival's Ecstasy. Our first stop was in Freeport. We weren't sure what to do but one thing stuck out - the ATV tours. So we booked it. In my usual fashion I will lay out the pros and the cons of the whole tour.
Pros:
The tour was well timed out. From the bus tour that showed us around a bit, to arrival at our ATVs and the ride, to the beach excursion, they really have this timed out to make the most of each and every moment.
The ATV experience was managed by Alex and Mario - two guys who really know their business. They took their time, insured total and absolute safety, and managed to get everyone there and back safely without any incidents.
The price was reasonable considering everything that was included.
The beach was beautiful and well recovered from Hurricane Sandy. Nice and clean, perfectly clear water, and perfectly safe.
The food was delicious and the beer was ice cold.
The garden area was absolutely incredible. And the local artist were talented and willing to bargain.
Cons:
The bus driver's microphone on the tour kept fading in and out - hard to understand him. I am sure that what "Captain Jack" was saying was interesting but because I could not hear him I will never know.
The bus A/C was a mess. It sort of worked. That sums it up. Don't get onto the bus expecting an ice cold incredibly comfortable charter bus. From my experience it is a typical third world nation form of public transportation. Not dangerous but just not as comfortable as it might have been.
Wish we could have kept the bandanas that they loaned us for the ATV ride. Would have been a really cool keepsake of the adventure.
Conclusion/Recommendations:
This is a MUST DO while on Freeport! As a matter of fact my wife and I are booked again in September and will be going on this one again then. From the safety to the views and the beaches, this entire tour was one beautiful memory after another. So long as you have a little adventure in your soul and enough strength in your arms to control a real machine, go for it. You won't regret it - I promise you.

While visiting Grand Bahama we wanted to do a little of everything. The woman at our tour desk recommended the Kayak Nature Tours. They had about 5 different tours, but we did the first one.
Our guide, Mike was excellent. From the moment he picked us up, he treated us like family and kept us laughing. We were given some preliminary instructions and then we set off on an hour or so kayak ride through the red mangroves. As we kayaked, Mike gave us a lot of history of the island and the mangroves. Eventually we paddled up and got off at this beautiful beach. We were then taken on a short ride down to an even more gorgeous part of the beach for a light picinic lunch. After lunch we had about an hour to sit and enjoy the beach before going on a nature walk and learning about some of Bahama's gorgeous flowers and the Lucayan indians. Finally we ended with a tour of two of the national parks caves and then it was back to the hotel.
The tour lasted about 5 hours and was well worth the $69 per person we paid. I would highly recommend this - or really any of their tours to anyone.

I'm going to describe each part of the tour in order with a time and a grade and maybe some personal comments
B+ - a guide-narrated 25 minute van drive out to youre kayaking launching point
B - 2.5 miles/ 1.5 hours of tandem Kayaking through the mangroves, lots of fish, oysters on the ground, water is calm and cool and deep enough so you never run aground, bugs are not really a problem (surprisingly). We were in a group with some first time kayakers who just could not figure it out at all, which meant we stopped and waited often. It was also 86 degrees and with the scorching sun,if you were waiting, you were baking. Also, because the guide was helping these other kayakers so often he had very little time to provide guide related information so I expect the trip could be much more informative.
D - 45 min Lunch - was make it yourself sandwiches with white or whole wheat bread, generic cold cuts (ham, turkey, kraft singles), lettuce, tomatoes, generic cookies and apples with lemonade, iced tea and water out out of cooler spigots in the shade of a shelter with benches. The location was nice but the food was meh. I asked the guide how he can deal with having these sandwiches for lunch every day for 5 years and he said, its not easy :P.
A - 1 hour on the beach - the gold rock beach is supposedly rated in the top 5 beaches in the world and I coudl see why. Soft sand, no creatures (except a little seaweed), 1 foot waves, and warm water. The grade of the beach is so slight you can walk out 300 feet and not even reach your waist (i'm 5 ft 9 inches). Absolutely beautiful and refreshing and quiet, not crowded at all. Best part of the tour
C - 30 min Nature tour - Take a short walk over to this man made bridge across the swash and feed the fish with bread crumbs from lunch, learn a little bit about the plants and animals on the island. I;m big into this so it was just too short for me to give a higher grade
Bminus - 45 minute Cave tour - Short walk again to two caves...all you do is walk down man made stairs and look into a cave that is filled with water. You dont go into anything, but it is beautiful nonetheless. The guide used this time to provide some history about the island and its people which I found interesting.
Overall experience - B, kayaking and beach = thumbs up, Nature walk and cave tour = thumbs sideways, Lunch = thumbs down
Some other things to be aware of.
- I sent in numerous questions via e-mail prior to my trip. These e-mails went unanswered for 5 hours so I called. These e-mails never were answered, but I am not sure if its because they knew I was the one that called or not. Probably best to call the toll free number
- Make a reservation not via the conceirge. A reservation with the conceirge is 10% more expensive than if you make it yourself (ours was $142 for the two of us, our friends who booked when they arrived were charged $158)
- Confirm your reservation via the conceirge. They will not officially accept your reservation until you arrive ont he island and confirm your location and room number. When you have that ask the conceirge to confirm your reservation for you. Saving you the cost of the local call but keeping the 10% discount
- The "What to do book" you get in most hotels also has coupons for the tour
- If you go on the tour and wish to book future tours you can get a discount from the driver/guide if you book after your current tour has ended (you may also get a discount if you book multiple tours when you book your original tour, but we were leaving the next day so it was never an option)
- Our guide was great, articulate, answered any and all questions, really nice guy

We filmed on one of the kayak Nature tours for a travel show and it was beautiful. A peaceful yet exciting excursion which shows you a side of the island that is increasingly hidden by large scale tourist developments. Very highly recommended to all tourists of all ages.

Sailed aboard the beautiful historical windjammer sailing ship, Alexander von Humboldt, on May 16, 2012. The crew is unique because it is comprised of a German group as well as a Bahamian group! The German crew swaps out every month with a new group from Germany and they are teaching the Bahamian crew the ropes. Very exciting to be able to sail on such a historical sailing ship with beautiful sails and get to see the crew climbing high up to adjust the sails and work together to let the sails out or roll them up. They even let you stand at the wheel and take pics. Very personable attention by all on board and especially from the Bahamians, who walk you to and from the ship. A lovely experience that we will look forward to again. Shouts out to Demethrie, Shannon, Denise, Ahmad, and Mike! Tips for future passengers: The day we were on board it was lightly raining on and off and the winds were practically nonexistent, and it was still a blast; so, if it's sunny and breezy you will have a ton of fun. Beer is available in the galley below and tee shirts too that have "Crew" printed on the back with a graphic of the ship on the front. An awesome experience!
PS: This windjammer cruise is apparently run by Grand Bahamas Nature Tours, who does kayak tours, as well. We didn't participate in a kayak tour. We've asked Trip Advisor to create a category for the historical windjammer, Alexander von Humboldt, so that other visitors will be able to find it easier.

I booked a Kayaking and Nature Excursion through a cruiseline for a day stop in Freeport.I was skeptical because sometimes I have found cruise sponsored excursions to be lacking.
We were picked up in a very large group as this group was doing multiple excursion types like kayking, biking, jeep tours. After driving about 20 minutes we transferred to a smaller van for our core kayak group. We were given to our guide whose name was Chad. I truly can't say enough nice things about him - super funny, very informative, friendly and very knowledgable about the island and it's flora and fauna. Our group had a couple small children (not with me) and he was very in tune to making sure those kids were taken care of.
After driving another 15-20 minutes we reached the Port Luyuca National Park. We were given a brief orientation and then we boarded our tandem kayaks. Chad stayed with the children and even helped a Mom with 3 by putting a young boy in his kayak with him. I had to laugh because this young boy asked Chad a million questions - he had alot of patience! Chad made sure our group was cool with him sticking close to the 2 Mom's with the young kids (of course no one minded).
We kayaked for 2.5 miles - about 1hr and 15 minutes through the mangroves. It was gorgeous! Kayaking - 2 to a kayak I learned I don't enjoy that much as I prefer to control my own destiny but it was still a great time. There was alot of manuvering and the path became so narrow in parts you had to take your paddle apart and just use one size.
We came to the end and we were about 15 minutes ahead of the rest of group. We enjoyed the beach area and waited for everyone to catch up. We were driven back to where we started where we boarded a very cool "Tom Sawyer" raft with a rope attached to the other side of the river and we were pulled across. We walked about 5 min down a long wooden boardwalk until we came to a gorgeous beach - I believe it was called Gold Rush Beach? Beyond beautiful!
Here they had a picnic lunch for us (cold cuts, cookies, fruit, tea/lemonade). We enjoyed the lunch and then had about an hour to enjoy the beach - sandbars, water, etc. There were starfish, the beach was beautiful - can't say enough about this spot.
There were about 9 raccoons at this area. Somewhat docile and very used to people. They wait to be fed from the lunch table - very cute and very odd. In the US when you have a raccoon hanging around like that in the daytime you would assume it was likely rabid. In the Bahamas - there is no rabies. Thank goodness!
We were then driven back by Chad to the cruiseship with 15 minutes to spare. Chad had a charming way of referring to the group - he called us "family" - thought it was very charming. Chad told us more about the island and answered lots of questions. I have to say both my husband I were greatly impressed. He was very intelligent and engaged - we learned so many new things about the Bahamas.
If I am ever in Freeport again I will certainly book another excursion through this company!

We cruised out of Charleston and had a port day in Freeport, Bahamas. We booked this excusion through Carnival Fantasy. We really had a wonderful time. The crew was so friendly and entertaining. The ship is a retired German Windjammer racing ship. The weather was windy enough to get a good sailing speed. You get to steer the ship and explore. It was really fun.

We found the tour info in one of the Grand Bahama tourism booklets that we got at our resort. We are so glad that we booked a tour because that day ended up being our favorite while staying on Grand Bahama. We didn't want to do the touristy banana boat tours or jet skiing. We're really glad we book this tour instead.
We enjoyed the nature walk and exploring the caves. Ben was very knowledgeable and informative. The kayaking through the mangroves was great but challenging! I would have preferred a single kayak but that was not an option.
Then Gold Rock Beach was simply amazing. A breath taking beach. I wish we'd had more time there. It was secluded and the water was super clear. One of the most beautiful beaches I've ever seen.
Some suggestions for the tour. Make sure to communicate to participants if there is anything they need to bring with them when they book the tour. We were not told to bring towels. The tour says all equipment will be provided so we thought that maybe they'd provide towels too. Luckily, we asked the guide before we left the hotel and my husband had time to run back to our room to grab towels. Also, the van we were transported in is in desperate need of a fixer upper. Better yet, get a new van.
Lunch was pretty basic, but we were satisfied. Excellent tour overall. We were very happy we went.

Sam was our guide for the day and he was wonderful. We took the Kayak/Gold Rock Beach and Ben's Cave day tour (includes lunch at the beach). The kayaking was first and we were provided a kayak demonstration. We kayaked through the mangrove trees which was really cool (wear bug spray with DEET in it). It was a very unique experience and Sam and the second guide were patient with the first time kayakers. We then went to see some neat caves in the Lucayan National Park, and Sam explained the history and how people actually dive in those caves! Then we took a short walk over to Gold Rock Beach and had lunch under a nice open-air building... we had about 1.5. hrs there to eat and hang out at this beautiful beach!! Boy was it beautiful! I compare the amazing water to that of Trunk Bay in USVI. We saw some great fish and when we left the water a baracuda swam by! lol
This tour was great and we are glad we took it!

which jeep tour also has kyack in the mangroves?
Written February 19, 2019
I am actually not sure of that answer.
There were people that were doing that excursion and left from the same area we did for the jeep tour, but I am not sure if one of the jeep tours includes kayaks as well.

Looking at the Freeport nature and kayak tour starting at carnival cruise port. We have children 12, 9, and 6. Would the 6 year old be able to ride in a kayak with an adult and one of the other children?? Or could we get the excursion cheaper by just skipping the kayaking part and hang out at the beach?
Written May 4, 2016
The excursion that my family and I booked through them was different than the kayak and jeep excursion. I'm sorry, but I'm not able to answer that question for you. If you call the carnival 800#, I'm sure someone there would be able to help you make the right decision. The customer service reps with carnival are very nice and knowledgable. Have a great trip!

I loved the Grand Bahama Nature Tours, It was an all day excursion. We were there 3 days and did other things the other days. You really got to see alot on the tour. The guide was great. Took the time to show you alot of the Island. Was a great day.

Hello, just wondering whether or not any of your tours (in particular the Lucayan National Park Kayak/Nature Tour) are appropriate for little kids. We have two daughters, aged 3.5yrs and 21 months. Also, can pick ups be arranged at locations other than main hotels? We are staying at a private home right by Smiths Point/Taino Beach. Thanks!
Written February 3, 2016
We did not take the Kayak/nature tour from the ship. When we were waiting for our excursion to start we did see some children but none at that age for that excursion. Sorry I couldn't really help. Have fun!
