About
The good news: this world-class stretch of white sand and turquoise water is St. John's most photographed beach, which features a marked underwater trail for beginning snorkelers. The bad news: because of its popularity, it can get very crowded with cruise ship passengers and members of sightseeing tours.

- MrNjorl667 contributionsArrive as soon as the gate opens and you get a great parking spot, your pick of the shade and enjoy a couple of hours of perfection. Waves of resort and cruise ship guests ebb and flow, so if you are snorkeling pick your times. $20/day (9-4) for a full kit rental seems reasonableVisited October 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten October 26, 2024
- Chris C1 contributionBest beach I have been to. Amazingly clear and an awesome snorkeling trail. We went by ourselves instead of as a Carnival excursion. We could have spent the entire day there if we had time. Excursion was $136 per person with no food. We paid $15 per person for a taxi from ship, then $18.32 per person for a round trip ferry, followed $9 for a taxi from ferry to beach. Beach access was $5 per person and chair rental was $10 each. $23 for chips burger and Diet Coke. Then taxi fares again. $104.32 if my math is correct. Benefit of doing it ourselves is we got food, downside is no protection if you are running late to ship. Don’t be in a rush because taxis leave when full so you may have to wait and ferry leave on the hour. Definitely go here!Visited August 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 1, 2024
- Chris EPeachtree City, Georgia203 contributionsTrunk Bay was beautiful! However, you have to pay $5 per person just to get into the park. They do have food and drink options as well as snorkel gear and chair rentals. If you like to snorkel, you will see fish and sea urchins around the small island right in front of the beach. We’ve heard of reef shark and stingray sightings on the right side of that island. The best snorkeling is at Maho Bay, where you will most likely see turtles and other larger sea life to the right of the beach.Visited February 2025Traveled as a coupleWritten February 14, 2025
- KD76 contributionsWe took a taxi out to the beach to avoid having to try and park. It was $9 each from Cruz Bay and not too far (12-15 minutes). The beach is gorgeous. We rented chairs and snorkel gear. There is a great snorkeling trail in the water that is marked with buoys and underwater plaques. The reef and fish are amazing! Lots to see. There are also restrooms, showers, food and drink options. The beach can get a little crowded so I would check the cruise schedule and maybe to when cruise ships aren’t coming in that day. I preferred Maho Beach but this is my 2nd favorite.Visited February 2025Traveled as a coupleWritten February 18, 2025
- Stephanie CMundelein, Illinois2,648 contributionsTrunk Bay Beach is a dream! We took a ferry from St. Thomas to St.John Red Hook station then taxi to Trunk Bay. It sounds like a lot but the ferry’s run on time on the hour. There is a 5 dollar entrance fee also fees for chairs and umbrellas. Food is available but watch out for the birds they will take your food. Plenty of places to snorkel and the views are unbelievable!Visited July 2024Traveled with familyWritten July 2, 2024
- Jay MMaryland103 contributionsTrunk bay is pretty good but you must get there early (8am) to get a parking spot and avoid the crowds. By 11 am the beach is filled with daily cruise visitors. Snorkeling was ok. There is a reef on the right which had some decent coral and fish. Didn't see any turtles or rays. Trunk bay is not a must see but if you are looking for an early morning beach it's not bad. Oh yeah, it's $5 a person to enter.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 15, 2024
- Mari DBrooklyn, New York1 contributionFinally got to go to St John's and Trunk Bay. It was by far the best day of my 10 day cruise. I was just so happy. The snack bar had a 9am - 11am happy hour. Great drinks - had a painkiller. In the things you should know category, if you order food at the snack shack, I would stay and eat at the tables. The birds will flock after you as I witnessed several times, and it was quite funny. The water is the absolute clearest I have seen and this is probably in the top 2 of most beautiful beaches I have even been to. There are bathrooms and showers onsite. There are several different types of chair rentals for $10. There is an entrance fee to the park of $5 per person.Visited August 2024Traveled soloWritten September 3, 2024
- Sereta D1 contributionTrunk Bay is beautiful! A very nice beach to take your family to relax or just enjoy the water and view. However I’m giving Trunk Bay Five stars because of the water and the view but if you decide to visit the admission fee is five dollars children under 15 are free. They only accept credit or debit cards but still bring cash just in case there is a power outage. The bathrooms were not clean so if you have to use the restroom just be prepared. There is a snack bar chairs and tents for rent. Oh and there is no WiFi or internet service. So be prepared. Visit Trunk Bay☺️Visited May 2024Traveled with familyWritten May 27, 2024
- Beach lovers6 contributionsThis beach is one of the most beautiful beach I have ever went to! The waters are filled with all different types of fish. Some swim right up to the shore line. This is the prefect place for some to learn to snorkle. As the waters range from shallow to deep. My 5 year son learn to snorkel her for the first time! I am so impressed with this beach. Pro: Best beach! Fill with fishies! Con: Bathroom/ Shower area smelt like pee. They only accept card payment/ Apple Pay ect no cash payments.Visited September 2024Traveled with familyWritten October 7, 2024
- ThomasMontgomery, Texas7 contributionsWe stayed in st Thomas for a week. Made a day out of going to trunk bay. So worth it. Took car ferry over at 7am to beat the cruise crowd. We stopped at provisions in St. John for a cup of coffee and some donuts. Took to go. Arrived at trunk around 830 and we were the second group there. 5$ per adult my two 10yr olds were free. There is food and drinks there that are available to purchase. Great food. We claimed our spot on beach and it was amazing. Highly recommend this and to get there early to get a good spot. Bring snorkel gear!Visited February 2025Traveled with familyWritten February 13, 2025

Gorgeous beach with decent facilities. Restaurant, bar, gift shop, bathrooms, showers to rinse off. They have a snorkeling trail with buoys to mark spots to swim to. The surf here can get quite rough but there are plenty of spots to find shade when you’re not in the water. There is charge to enter the national park, $5 per adult.
My only complaint would the lack of adequate parking. Arrive early if you want a parking spot or don’t have a 4x4. When the lot runs out you need to climb over a steep curb into a ravine on the side of the road for parking.

This beach is easily accessed by taxi from Cruz bay. There is a $5/pp admission fee for adults but it has shower and changing amenities, bars and snack shacks, and chair, snorkel and shade rentals. The snorkeling was great. Clean and beautiful beach.

We walked this beautiful beach with crystal clear water and sand as soft as velvet. We were early enough In the day that there were only a couple people there (7:30am). We found our own little inlet to enjoy the view. We returned at sunset time. On a future trip we’d plan to come here as early as possible (7AM), and try o the snorkel trail. I'd read mixed reviews on that so we didn't prioritize it this trip. But we'd definitely come back here in the future for the beach- just early or late to avoid crowds.

Crowded, loud, no parking. Snorkeling is not worth the effort, no coral, very little fish. It’s perfect for people who like to party, drink, families with young children like toddlers. You pay to get in but all services end at 4pm, they close the bathrooms, cut water in outdoor showers. If you want a quiet beach with good snorkeling- avoid this one.

Trunk Bay truly is post-card worthy and one of the most beautiful beaches in all of Caribbean with its crystal clear, blue water. It was not crowded in April, and even if there were a lot of people, it probably wouldn’t feel like it because of how expansive and spacious the beach is. The weather in April was not very hot - it was very pleasant, averaging about 82-83F daytime. The beach is very clean and feels very safe, as does the entire island. Highly recommended.

This was the most beautiful beach I have ever been to in my life (including the south of France)! Literally “stupid” gorgeous like straight out of a magazine. A bit of a haul to get there, but sooooo worth it! I wish we found it sooner in our trip. Cleanest beach and clearest water. Best beach of any USVI that we went to hands down. Plenty of space (lack of shade though). Everything closes at 4pm so something to keep in mind if you are renting chairs or needing a taxi.

Parking is limited here. Arrive early to get a space.
Entrance fee is $5/person. Recommend that you buy annual family pass for $30
Enjoy the self-guided underwater snorkel trail. facilities include a snack bar, rentals for chairs/snorkel gear, bathrooms and showers. Picnic tables and grill stand available.
Strong winds on North shore can cause turbulent waters in winter.
Shade is available along edge of beach.

Trunk Bay beach is beautiful with everything you could possibly need from a snack and drink (yes, including alcoholic beverages), showers and full bathrooms. The water is relatively calm and moderately ADA accessible (my spouse has a disability with walking and has to use a cane or walking sticks). But they do have a beach wheelchair available and handicapped parking! The only disappointment was the snorkeling as most of the coral reef has been bleached out. Still would recommend a day visit to relax on the beach with a fruity rum drink! The staff is so friendly and accommodating!!

Took a taxi up the mountain to Trunk Bay Beach after driving via ferry from St. Thomas. Have your camera ready as you will pass some magnificent views of St. John’s island and other local beaches.
This is a state public beach with an entrance fee of $5.00. Chairs, snorkeling equipment, and canopies are available for rental. This white, sandy, clear water, beautiful beach offers views of local remote islands and a few stingray visits. There are restrooms and outside showers for rinsing. We stayed about 2 1/2 hours -well worth it!

Our cruise ship does not get into St. Thomas until 11:30 AM. Would like to take ferry to St Johns then taxi to Trunk Bay. Any concerns with doing this on a short day. We need to be back at the cruise ship by 6 PM.

Hi, roughly how far is the walk from the parking area to the beach? I am mobility challenged and just trying to figure out which beach would be easiest to get from parking area to the beach. Thank you!
