I had snorkeled on a number of beaches on ST John's north side, therefore I let Captain Steve utilize his knowledge of the area. It was a half day trip and three stops were made. All stops held different environments and were thrilling. While we were in the water, he was informative while involved in conversation with my partner who did not go in the water and courteous by moving the boat into shade for her on the hot morning. Steve was familiar with all the species we saw and answered our questions.
He is a professional

We really enjoyed our private charter with Captain Steve at Rockhoppin. We booked an all day cruise around the island and were taken to areas that had great snorkeling. Captain Steve was helpful , informative and kind. We look forward to using Rockhoppin again in the future.

Thank you,

Christine and Corky

We took RockHoppin’ over to Jost Van Dyke for the day and I think it’s probably going to be the least expensive charter you’ll find. That said, Captain Steve is a nice guy but doesn’t necessarily bring a ton to the trip. He gets you from point A to point B and as long as you know where that is then you’re all set. He did handle all customs forms and has good rapport with customs officials. All in all, good value on a boat that’s been a little beat up.

Honest review for you to decide.

This is a no-frills snorkel trip. That being said, Capt. Steve will take you where you want to go and supply water in a jug and snorkel equipment. Therefore, if you are experienced and know where you want to go then he may be a bargain.

If you are new and may need some help (especially with children) then you may want to pay a little more. Or if you want a bit of a tour with local information chose another cruise. He will stop, let you get off, then wait for you to get back. Ask a question and you will get a concise answer with no more offered. He is a nice guy and an experienced Captain. He is not a tour guide or helper for your trip.

I have done many trips and recommend someone else if you are a beginner snorkeler or have need of direction. At one stop I was glad to get in the water and to the area first, just to see that it would be dangerous for our inexperienced divers to possibly get caught between coral rocks with the current.

Lastly, it may be that a full-day trip will get you better service than a 3/4 day trip. Remember that this is a business and a 3/4 day will be disappointing to some captains realizing that it kills their day.

Do not use this service if you have any other option. The administrative staff were rude, the captain was late and didn’t posses a working phone. (Used ours to order lunch) I believe this was due to Lucy not communicating the correct time. I called her 10 mins after pickup time and she yelled at me for “changing the itinerary” which was actually me just asking if we could go to lime out.

The day of discovering and snorkeling was dictated by the captain. The captain didn’t want to be there and shared no real passion or knowledge of the history of the area. Some good snorkeling and enjoyed the water, but next time definitely spend our $1000 with a different company. We would welcome some recommendations.

Our family of 5 really enjoyed the 3/4 day snorkeling trip with Captain Steve. Steve took us to 5 different snorkeling locations that you could only access by boat. He was very accommodating and laid back. I would recommend Rock Hoppin and Captain Steve!

Captain Steve was great. Super nice guy, took us to great snorkelling spots, point out highlights of the island(s) and got us to the floating taco bar (Lime Out) before the big crowd. Even threw a couple lines in the water for potential mahi. Hoping to get back to St. John next year and if we do, wouldn’t hesitate to book again!

If you want a relaxing, fun, personalized outing Capt Steve at Rock Hoppin is the best ! He set us up with two snorkel cruises to the best and most beautiful spots and also included a stop for lunch at the Pizza Boat. We also enjoyed a beautiful sunset cruise with Capt Steve to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We would definitely recommend him and Rock Hoppin to anyone going to St John for fun on the water. The private, personalized schedule and outings were fabulous! Don’t miss it!!!

Our group of four spent a day with Captain Steve cruising around St. John. Steve met us at the very hectic National park dock right on time and we got out of the harbor and planned our day. We jumped in the water just off Reef Bay and hiked up to the pools and ruins and he met us back just off the beach. We then headed to the water just off Little St. James for an amazing snorkel and water tour of the island. Steve then took us to Lovongo for a great snorkel and one last stop at Caneel Bay for a beach snorkel and stroll on the beach. Lots of amazing sea life, fun conversations with Steve and top notch service the entire way. Highly Recommend!

Spent an anazing day snorleling in the Virgin Islands. Prior to the hurricanes, I had visited St. John and went on trips where there were many boats and snorkelers in one area. Captain Steve suggested we go to several areas where he chose and we were the only boat moored in the area. Each stop was a bit different and we were able to observe crystal clear water, multiple species of fish and coral which was develping following the damage from hurricanes and global warming. Earlier on this vacation, I had rented a jeep and gone to Salt Pond Bay, Francis Bay and Cinnamon Bay.. I enjoyed the snorkeling and what I observed in those areas. However, the spots Steve chose provided an enhanced experience where many different rocks, coral and fish were present. His knowledge of the area is unmatched.
