By far the best beach on Saint John. Beautiful beach water and sand. The only bad part is that you need to get there early to grab one of the only 4 parking spaces. Well worth the effort tho!

I was finally able to get a parking spot for this beach and explore on my last day visiting the island. This beach is absolutely beautiful and has good snorkeling spots along the sides near the rocks. My new favorite beach on the island.

If you're like me, and don't love to be surrounded by hundreds of tourists all the time, then this is the place to go. Mermaid's chair is within swimming distance from this beach. If you swim out around the shallow coral and to the right, you will find a little spit of land surrounded by black rock. Amazing! We found some fantastic fish and marine animals, even an octopus. Truly amazing. Coming back soon! (limited parking) We've been to St John many times and had never been because, to be honest, we couldn't really find it. If you are on North Shore Road going to all the amazing beaches, drive until you see the white picket fence. Follow that until you see a large iron gate on the left side of the road, and you've found Oppenheimer!

We have renamed Oppenheimer Beach to( OLD HAG BEACH) after our experience with Teri Gibney. At the onset of the Corona Virus, My wife and I had visited Oppenheimer beach. At that time, there were no government restrictions regarding access to public beaches. Terry decided that she would come down and approach us while we were minding our own business on the beach. She claimed that she had kids inside the house which was located about 100 yards from where we were sitting on the beach. Obviously, these must have been grandkids. She attempted to condemn our visit to the beach in fear of Terry and her family contracting the coronavirus, while ignoring social distancing. Her conversation implied that the beach was closed and not available to public access. I corrected her politely while using tact and respect. We decided to leave the beach, only because she gave a horrible vibe to such a beautiful place. I only write this review so people understand that Oppenheimer beach is 100% totally owned by the US government and has public access to anybody who chooses to visit the beach. Don’t let Teri ruin your day at the beach. Next time, we won’t leave!

Very limited parking (3-4 cars max.) Walk down the path behind the wrought iron gate to a beautiful secluded beach. No food, no facilities, just beauty.

Once you walk through the iron gate that says OPPENHEIMER you can’t help but feel some history as these grounds were owned by the father of the A Bomb - Robert Oppenheimer. The parcel of land is also home to the long time family of St John known as the Gibney’s - while not noteworthy on a global scale like Robert, this family was very much intwined in the islands course as the mid-1900’s.
As for today, it’s all about the beach and the fact that unless some locals have got special permission to have an event there- it’s never crowded.
While probably more than a dozen 40 foot palms were destroyed by the 2 CAT 5”s from last Sept there is nice recovery and or the beach and water is still fabulous, thus the rating - fab beach and not crowded = 4 stars and add the bonus history and it’s probably a 6. To side notes 1) you have to get there by probably 9 to get one of the 3 parking spots and 2) google Oppenheimer Beach images and look at the tire swing off the palm ❤️🌴 it may have been blown out to sea last year but it’s never gone from anyone’s heart that came here like myself, many a day, prior to the devastation of last Sept.

Quick drive from Cruz Bay. Very limited parking (3 spots). The parking across the street (referenced in guidebooks) is no longer available. You can drive to the top of the hill and park - approx. 300 yards away (no sidewalks) Very picturesque and quiet. Loved that it was just us and maybe a dozen or so other tourists. Easy to get to the beach and once construction is done with outdoor showers, it will be great to rinse off before you head to your car.

My boyfriend and I walked from Cruz Bay to Oppenheimer! This included walking on the trail from Cruz Bay to the Cannel beach resort and the train ended there. From there we walked on the road to Oppenheimer. Once we got there their was awesome snorkeling and the tire swig pictures are the best from our trip. I'm so glad we went but it wasn't easy to get to. I heard taxis will drop you off or you can park your car but there are only two spots or so and you can't block the gate. Anyways glad we went for the pictures!

What a great find! This small beach usually has just a few others on the beach. Only three parking spaces at the gate to the beach — you can park at Cinnamon Bay or Peace Hill and walk over to the beach.

Wow! We found this place back in 1988! The ruins of the Oppenheimer house was still there with graffiti on what was left of a wall. We would be the only people there all day & the snorkeling was great! And when we asked the cab driver to drop us off, they were surprised we knew about it! Then you would just ask your cab driver to come back in however many hours you wanted to stay! Not sure if the cabs still do that...keep it secret! I will try to find my photo of the ruins & post it
