The boat is under new ownership so please disregard any negative comments on the review feed. Steve (the new owner) is very accommodating and wants to make sure his customers are happy with their experience. Our family of 5 found this sailboat after searching St. Thomas options, with many others being either too expensive or not available on Christmas Day 2019. When our cruise itinerary changed last minute due to weather our fear was that HM couldn't accommodate us for the switched port date. We were pleasantly surprised that we were still able to cruise in St. Thomas with Captain Brian!! This excursion is much less expensive than the others and therefore doesn't have the meal, snacks or drinks included. However, you can stop at the market near the boat and buy whatever you'd like for the day. There were a few snacks and water, etc. on board in case anyone didn't bring theirs and you can just purchase from the Captain. Captain Brian was so much fun! There is nothing better than having a sailboat and a captain to yourself (vs. a 30-40 person catamaran) to spend the day as you wish. It was really windy the day of our sail so the waves were pretty big until we got away from the open water and between the island. We sailed to St. John and stopped at Cinnamon Bay to snorkel for awhile, cruised Maho Bay looking for sea turtles. Our main interest was to get as much sailing in as possible so we opted for one snorkeling stop, however, if this is your priority the captain will accommodate you. Two of my grandchildren were on board (18 & 14) and they both said this was their favorite day of our entire cruise! If you've never experienced real sailing, this is a must... but make sure to bring something for motion sickness if you are prone to that.

My boyfriend and I planned this 3 night and 4 day charter. I believed I paid around $850.00 per day and can not even believe what we got for that. So many issues but will try to summarize the best I can. First is that even though we were asked for likes and dislikes for food the food that we got was very poor and not what I expected at all. If asked what we wanted to eat so the menu could be customized to our likes I would think that would be the case. I requested meat and seafood for my boyfriend and he got a meal that was a salad with salmon on it and that was it for the meat for him for the trip. Out of approximately 12 meals that was it for meat. No beef , pork or other seafood made as requested. The meals were curried lentils and rice for one, a vegan salad for a meal, and another dish that would normally just be a side dish. Breakfast seemed to be the best meal with one being french toast and another being pancakes. It was discussed half way into the trip that Dawn was a Vegan and she did not eat meat and wouldn't cook it. So she basically cooked meals that she liked. I like salads and explained that in my preference sheet as and we did get a couple of salads but that would typically be a side dish not a meal when paying what we did. No hot water.... Had to take cold showers.. they were obsessed about saving water which I understand with it being on a boat however hot water would be nice. I think this is something that can be expected when spending this kind of money and should of been disclosed prior to coming that hot water was not possible. They called their charter "glamping". Those were their words so basically glorified camping which is not what you think you will get for the cost of the trip. Also requested bottled water which seems like a pretty simple request but none available. Was offered water that she said was filtered and that was a bit concerning. Also requested on preference sheet regarding drinks that my boyfriend likes whiskey and likes to try different kinds and was happy to pay for premium brands. I believe he got one premium brand rum drink and then they said it was gone. Did have one whiskey he tried and some beers but nothing like I asked for. The bed was super uncomfortable. There was a hatch right above the bed that had to be left open for air flow because of no AC however it seemed to rain in quite often and when we were woke up by the rain that had to be closed and opened during middle of the night. I really feel like after spending that much money it should of been a much better experience. Dawn and Kelly are very nice however I think that day charters would be the best option if going with their service. In my opinion they are not equipped to charter for over nights and they do not spend much of the money of food and drinks. I am guessing out of the almost $2500.00 I spent for that time the food and drinks maybe cost them $200.00 total to feed both of us and that is probably a generous guess. They had five of seven charters cancelled this year they told us so maybe they were trying to complete this charter as cheap as possible but it was not good at all. They were talking about selling the boat and the business so maybe they have lost interest. We just had the bad luck of picking this one when they have lost interest but I definitely would not recommend this option to anyone if looking for overnight charter. Again a day charter would be a better idea with Hauna Matata Charters. I have been on a charter before with another company and was so hopeful this would be comparable or better but unfortunately it was not fun and a huge waste of money. I spent the time and read a lot of reviews for them which were all very good reviews but clearly not what we got. After talking to other charter companies since I don't feel our expectations were unreasonable but do believe we got completely ripped off. If we could of ended sooner we would have but did not have a condo set up until end of charter and was not able to find anything else short notice during the trip. I have not ever wrote such a poor review but I do not want anyone else to go into a charter with Hakuna Matata without being completely informed. Thank you

Good afternoon, I'm sorry to hear this. My wife and I have recently purchased the boat and business. If you come back to St. Thomas we would love to take you out for a day sail for free if we are available.

We took a day sail on the Hakuna Matata, Captain Kelly and Dawn were great hosts. Sailed to Buck Island and snorkeled over a ship wreck, then to Turtle Cove. It was a fun day

First off we were met on the docks by Dawn, whose warm greeting made us feel completely welcome, boarding via the dinghy was easy even for us land lovers. On board the drinks flowed, music cranked and the laughter started, setting the mood for the entire fun filled day with Capt Kelly and Mate Dawn. So much fun, thanks for an incredible day of sailing.
