Just plan on being late and have >$40 extra cash per person

I was super nervous to take Road Town Fast Ferry because of some of the truly awful reviews, but in the end it was an okay experience. On our way to Tortola, the ferry was over an hour late but on the way back it was only about five to ten minutes late. Island-time, as they say. Don't put yourself in a situation where you need the ferry to be on time. The ferry itself (we had Lady Caroline) was pretty new and shiny, and definitely clean. The air conditioning on the upper deck was broken during our voyage, but downstairs was okay. There are a lot of additional fees/taxes (over and above $65+$11ish fare booked online) that can only be paid in cash when you get there- $10 port fee+$5 checked bag fee+$10 "environmental levy" going in to Tortola, and $5 bag fee+$10 "exit tax" on the way back to St.Thomas, and tips for the baggage handlers. It ended up being about a $115 journey per person. As an FYI- for whatever reason, the onboard TVs seemed to always be set to some pretty violent shows (Criminal Minds, The Gifted) and the TVs were LOUD, so definitely plan ahead if you have young kids.

Help when needed
Feb 2020
I want to commend the Smith organization (especially Marjorie Smith) for help with our transportation. First we missed our flight to St. Thomas in November due to an airline problem and Marjorie helped us reschedule our round trip transportation for Feb. We arranged to have them pick us up at the airport. Their driver was there with a sign so we knew where to go and got us to ferry terminal in time to make the ferry we needed to make. For our return we found out that customs at the airport was closed and we would have to go through customs at Red Hook. Marjorie helped to get us on an earlier ferry even though it was another company. They made them take all of the luggage off the ferry even for those going on to Charlotte Amalie. We then decided to take a taxi from Red Hook to the airport. We kept in touch with Marjorie the whole way and she was very kind and helpful! Thank you.

Watch out for scams
Mar 2019
When I purchased two return tickets (from Tortola to Red Hook) they told me my credit card didn't go through, even though they had me sign a receipt. I suggested they try the card again, or I'd give them another card, and they told me I'd have to pay cash. Arguing with them went nowhere, and my cell service was poor so I couldn't call the credit card company, so I handed over the cash (couldn't miss my flight out of St. Thomas) and when I got home and looked at my credit card statement, sure enough they had charged me twice.

Don't count on being on time
Feb 2020
This is one ferry that you don't want to count on to be on time. On the particular day that we left, the ferry left about 45 minutes late. Once on board we found out that customs in Charlotte Amalie was closed and that we would have to stop in Red Hook to go thru customs. So that took even more time and some passengers were freaking out because they had a plane to catch. Actually got off and took a cab from there, which was probably a smart idea.

Don’t do it. Use Dream Catcher
Dec 2019 • Friends
Despite having a round trip ticket, the Tortolla office refused to provide my friend and my family our prepaid round trip ticket. Below is my complaint sent to fast ferry which I still have no response. In addition my phone calls went unanswered.

Dear Sir-

I run a charter business out of Tortola and often coordinate ferry service with my customers. In fact, I was one of the first to return to Tortola after Irma because I believe in the people and wanted to contribute by spreading business to people that maintain my boat and have my customers do the same.

I regret to ask for your help. Yesterday both myself (Chris V & Kristine E) and my customers (Jeff C, Kerri C) were denied (at the Roadtown Ferry terminal) the returned portion of our round trip ticket, despite providing the round trip ticket receipts to the lady at the front desk when attempting to leave Tortola (below). We simply wanted our tickets for the 2:30pm departure on Sunday and pay the $5 change fee—which we called in advanced (Saturday) and confirmed this was the only thing we needed to do. Since I travel your Ferry service a lot, I was already familiar with this and was confident this would not be an issue.

So again, despite having our round trip ticket purchased in advanced, the lady at the counter refused to provide us our tickets. This forced me to buy two one way tickets from “Dream Catcher” at a cost of $200 ($50 per ticket x 4 people) because we needed to get back to ST. Thomas.

This is to request that we be refunded back the $200 to cover the costs of the returned tickets purchased in advanced from Fast Ferry but not honored. Fast Ferry has my business credit card on file. I reviewed this issue, on Sunday 12/15, with the young lady at the St. Thomas terminal and she can update you with any additional details.

Thank you for your assistance.

Issue Free Trips

Although there a lot of negative reviews, I had no issues taking the late ferries. They were on time and efficient. The customs is a hassle, especially going to Road Town, but that is not the company's fault

Goverment should revoke their license
Jan 2020
With St Thomas and Tortola recovering from the hurricane, visitors should hope for friendly competent service. The ferry delivers on neither and should be avoided whenever possible. Our 4:15pm ferry left late because luggage had to be loaded in the passanger area. With few seats outside, it was unfortunate to look at the beautiful scenery through filthy windows. But worse was yet to come. When the ferry docked 45 minutes late, we waited another half hour on line on the boat while they unloaded the luggage. When we got off the boat there were two immigration officials to handle the 200 passengers. The immigration officials in Tortola treated us like we were entering a penal colony. "Don't look at your phone. Put down your back pack. If your form is filled out wrong go to the back of the line." With our car rental place closing at 7pm, I asked if I could go to the front of the line. Finally, I was allowed and arrived one minute before closing.
Tortola is fabulous. I beg its government to revoke the Fastferry's license and put in place immigration officials who like people. While I will return to Tortola, many of the visitors on line with me will not. This is a bad result for the people of Tortola. Government must do something!

Experience both ways is extremely unfriendly, chaotic and unreliable. You buy your ticket in advance but still have to wait in long lines and pay to check bags. On way back to St Thomas, we were 45 minutes late and missing connections but they made us wait in the rain for 20 minutes before we could enter customs so they could unload bags.

Fact is, there isn’t much choice....do your math when adding ferry and baggage costs etc. San Juan with a flight into Tortola May be a better option.
