It was a semi-quiet day when we visited. Not everything was open. But the streets were super clean, buildings looked freshly painted, and what was open was lovely. The folks here are so warm and friendly. We learned that they had been closed for 8 months during the pandemic so they are ready to make a sale.

The street is lovely and in the process of becoming even more so. It is clear that investment has been made into nicely paved cobblestone sidewalks and street ways. The shops lining the street are predominantly high-end jewelry vendors, clearly catering to week-to-do tourists. Be sure to walk down the many side alleys that serve as mini malls. They offer shade and breezes and some more interesting shopping opportunities...as well as this fun drinking hole in the photo.

This city is very old so the infrastructure is really cool! The buildings, the road, lots of beautiful doors and other architecture. There are all these little alley ways you can go down and they do feel kind of enchanting!
There are tons of jewelry stores and I guess people like that. We were constantly asked to come inside. We're not really jewelry people but a lot of other folks seem to like it. The people at the Side Street Pub are wonderful and fun. A great place ( gets really crowed when boats are in) to hang out for drinks! Also close by is a world class beer bar called Taphus! It is awesome and the staff is incredible! Check out Marissa! She's amazing.
Main street is teeming with life and people from so many different places! The Chicken Fry up the street is run back some incredibly cool Dominican people and they served yummy to go food for a very nice price.
Also close by is a newer restaurant called Surf and Turf! Everyone seemed to love Virgilio across the street, no offense to them we LOVED Surf and Turf. Mellow and her awesome family own this place. We made friends with locals here and had an amazing time. Great Food! Wonderful bar.

They have a lot of shops but it seems like it’s nothing but jewelry shops followed by other little shops. To the point that it’s overwhelming due to the sales people trying to bring you inside your stores on the grounds of giving you a free gift. Supposedly it’s the duty free spot because it’s right across the port and they sale a lot of jewelry. Not sure how they sale a lot of jewelry because majority of the items we saw. We’re twice as much as what they cost in the DFW area (Texas). Aside from that. Just the older style of the buildings look beautiful but even then. It’s not for me because I’m not into jewelry. Especially with the outrages prices.

Day trip from Road Town Tortola .. we went with Road Town fast ferry .. first the costs for a couple $200 plus departure tax $40 … then another $20 in St Thomas departure tax .. so travel for a couple just a few hours was $260 …
Charlotte Amalie itself isn’t exactly exhilarating, lots of Jewellery shops along Main Street and T shirt, souvenir shops and some bars, restaurants, nothing new there then.
No historic sites apart from the fort built in 1671, red colour.
Nice stroll along the promenade. For a few hours and a snack not worth the cost and red tape and effort overall.

I would not recommend going to this shopping area unless 1) you are in the market for expensive jewelry or 2) there is a cruise boat in town. I took a taxi to town from a resort, thinking I could get some souvenirs and stuff. Many of the stores were closed since no boats were in town. I ended up walking along the waterfront to a differnt shopping area, which was a little better, but still about 50% of the shops were closed because of the limited tourist traffic. I believe this adventure was on a Tuesday. Everyone in town knows when the cruise boats are in port, so I hihgly recommend asking before making the trip into town.

My daughter & I walked down Main Street just about every day that we were in VI. We never bought anything as it's mostly diamond/jewelry stores and other upscale shops. Someone told us that when there aren't any cruise ships docked that the stores close early.

Having visited during the COVID-19 pandemic, while cruise ships are still banned, I found this shopping district a ghost town. There were extremely few tourists (5?), many businesses were boarded up and other merchants stood in their doorways harassing us to come in their store. We had to get out of there as quickly as possible as it was quite disturbing. If we ever return to St. Thomas we will NOT visit Main Street.

Sorry you had to experience that. We can't wait for the pandemic to be over so all the stores can be back open again.
Yes, it is unfortunate and not very professional to have "barkers" stand in the entryway of stores trying to pull you in but it is a few bad apples that give Main Street and St. Thomas a bad name and for that I apologize.
I hope will be back

We had been on this street years ago coming off a cruise ship. The area look much as it did then except that so many shops were closed or non existent. For the ones that were there they are friendly and welcoming. My jewelry stores. Emeralds are the big jewelry besides diamonds. T-shirt shops and other things. Its hard to come back from 2 category 5 Hurricanes in 2017 and Covid stopping the Cruise Ships. These people are resilient and it won't be long before their back. We still had a great day

Disappointing - without the cruise ships coming in, not much is open. Marina was cool and lots of beautiful yachts to look at but that was about it. Hoping things improve for that area. Glady's restaurant was cool - recommend eating there

We can't wait for the cruise ships to come back in full swing either.
Yes, our marinas are amazing and so is the food as Glady's

Looking to get a TAG watch, where would you recommend on the Island for the best deals
Written February 10, 2020
There is a Tag boutique by Little Switzerland, check there. Authorized dealer as well

Hum, curious, what is there for men, other than cigars, t-shirts and rum?
Written September 21, 2016
Not much. It’s a fraction of the vibrant town it once was. I wouldn’t waste the time. Head to one of the beautiful beaches on the north shore or take a day trip on a boat instead.

Which jewelry shop is located at 5093 Dronningen's Gade Suite 2, St. Thomas? I bought a piece of jewelry there and would like to give them a great review! Unfortunately I believe they just moved from another location in town so I am trying to find them.
Written February 11, 2016
I am not able to answer that question. I did visit several jewelry stores on the Island, but do not remember addresses. Just type
in the name of the Jewelry store and you should be able to get that information.

Just want to know that we don't need any guide? Can just walk from the cruise ship to the down town area?
Any attraction recommended to see?

Hi Amberbye, It depends on where your ship is docking. Most ships dock at Charlotte Amalie. There is a huge shopping area called Havensight Mall within the confines of the dock that houses numerous shops. Main street in town is out the main gate and to the left. It is about a mile walk into town. If your ship docks at Crown Point which is a few miles west Havensight you will be on the other side of main street. You will need to go out the gate and go right, we forget the distance. There is no need for a guide. At both docks there are numerous taxis (open vehicles that carry 10 to 20 people). Taxi prices are set by the port authority and posted so there is no worry about getting over charged. We recommend instead of going into town, you take one of the taxis to Magens Bay Beach (about $8 each way). Megens Bay is one of the nicest beaches in all the Caribbean. Taxis are available both ways and you don't need to book a shore excursion to Megans Bay aboard ship. It will cost more and you can do the same on your own. To get a handle on things, do Google Searchs for: Megans Bay and Havensight Mall Map. Also check out TripAdvisor for both places. We have been to St. Thomas numerous times and know you will enjoy your visit. Regards, George and Veronica

Where is 38 Dronnigans Gade, St. Thomas, US Virgin Island?
Written July 6, 2015
That is the address of Blackbeard's Castle, which is currently closed and for sale for 8.75 mil. in case you are interested in purchasing it. Look on tripadvisor under Blackbeard's Castle. Some pretty disappointed people who had planned an excursion there. Glad I checked it before we cruise in November.
