This fountain is between the 99 Steps and Blackbeard's Castle. To get to the castle you must climb the stairs where there is a beautiful garden that decorates this beautiful fountain in its center. It was made by the Americans Richard Hallier and was inaugurated in 2005. This fountain commemorates three women of historical importance for this island. Queen Maria, Agnes, and Josiah, who in 1878 led a successful insurrection where they demanded from the Danish government better of work, salary, and life conditions.

**Tip: Free admission
** You can go any hour of the day – open to the public

If you are like me and that like to see the place in the video (because pictures sometimes are very Instagram, if you know what I mean, I prepare a video of this place if you are interested in watching it. Search on YouTube "De Tour with Lulú" and you can find it there. Enjoy your trip!

We found this statue of three women holding torches while exploring the area at the top of 99 Steps. I didn't realize it was so close to Blackbeard's Tower. It's located at the base. This beautiful bronze statue is in a well manicured garden area in a driveway/walkway.

While climbing steps (not “the 99 steps”, we traversed a wider set of 81 just 1/2 a block away) to Blackbead’s castle (closed still due to storm damage) came across this charming statue. Beautiful views — love the story of these women’s courage.

On the way up to Blackbeard’s castle we found a large bronze sculpture of three women holding lanterns and torches aloft. We noticed the signage (somewhat obscured by plant growth) that explained that the sculpture was in honour of the three women that started a revolt against the poor living and working conditions for the locals prior to the Transfer. A true monument that isn't shown on any travel map but is historically important.

The Three Queens monument is located just below Blackbeard's castle. This area is easiest reached by walking north of Emancipation Park, turning right on Kongens Gade, then hiking up the 99 steps. On reaching the top of the steps, just stroll to the right and a cut stone wall will come into view. The steps to the right of the wall, with metal railings, lead to the Three Queens monument, which is the centerpiece of a small garden surrounded by hedges. This tribute was installed in 2005.

The sculpture depicts Mary Thomas, Axeline Salomon, and Mathilda McBean, who were all recognized as leaders of the 1878 Fireburn Labour riot on St. Croix. Each lady holds an item(s) related to the riot. The south facing lady has a machete and a flambeau. Both items are symbols of freedom and struggle. The lady facing east has a flambeau and the north facing lady has a kerosene oil lantern. The lantern was made famous by Harriet Tubman on the Underground Railroad in the USA, and is also known as a symbol of hope and freedom.

Slavery in the Danish West Indies was officially ended by an emancipation proclamation on 3 July 1848. For thirty years after emancipation, not much changed for the newly freed slaves, as they were "economically" depressed, by the plantation owners who paid ridiculously low wages and maintained poor working conditions. On 1 October 1878, the Three Queens were said to have organized a riot which led to buildings and plantations being burned. More than 70 rioters and 2 Danish soldiers were killed. There were many arrests after the revolt, which resulted in 12 rioters being hanged. A group of 34 rioters who were arrested included the Three Queens, and they were sent to Copenhagen, and jailed for 5 years. They returned to St Croix in 1887 and completed their sentences. It took many years for the former slaves to financially benefit from their freedom, but the Fireburn Riot is recognized as the event that marked the start of the change for better treatment of workers.

Other nearby attractions include the 99 steps, Emancipation Park and Fort Christian.

It was nice to see the gardeners were tending to the flowers and hedges surrounding this statue. That really enhanced its appearance. The three queens were former African slaves who, although freed, led a protest for fair wages and working conditions because conditions had not changed since they were slaves. Their revolt was successful.

You will pass right by this on the way up to Blackbeard's castle. They are behind some bushes but easily spotted.
