About
The fourth-largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, this quiet 492-acre island beckons travelers in search of a laid-back vacation. At the pristine Honeymoon Beach, which is a short walk from the ferry dock, you can swim, snorkel, kayak or chill by the beach bar. You can also bike around the island to view birds and other wildlife that call this place home, or hike up to the historic fort and explore remains of military fortifications. To reach Water Island, you can take a boat tour or ride the ferry from St. Thomas. – Tripadvisor

    Great Beach and Views
This was our 1st time to Water Island. It is a short, 20 minute, ferry from Charlotte Amalie, in front of Tickles Restaurant. The ferry runs on the hour out and returns immediately to St Thomas. The island is small and if you are into hiking can be seen in 3 hours or so, although it is very hilly. We, being 70 something seniors, opted for a golf cart rental. Depending on which cart you can get, 2 to 6 people, the fee is reasonable. The issue is availability. You should reserve at least a week before you want to go to be reasonably sure of getting a cart. The views are spectacular from many vista's. If you cannot get a cart there is a free shuttle from the ferry dock to Honeymoon Beach, one of the prettiest on St Thomas. The water is calm, views are great, beach bar and grill is reasonable and the food is tasty. My only reason for not giving it a 5 star rating is the golf cart issue. Well worth a visit if you have an extra day in St Thomas.

    Lovely day exploring the island
We spent a lovely day here. We went over on the 9am ferry and stopped to pick up our golf cart. It was seamless. We drove to the fort first which had a great view of St. Thomas. After that we went to Limestone beach. It’s about a 5 minute walk to the beach. It is rocky so take care. The whole beach is all washed up coral. It is beautiful. There are rocks in the water so water shoes would be helpful but we didn’t have them. We spent about 2 hours on the beach and were the only ones there. It was amazing. Went to Heidi’s Honeymoon grill afterwards. I am still thinking abt the grilled cheese. Lovely view. We stopped at the art stand and bought some jewelry and a Christmas ornament. After that we spent several hours at Honeymoon beach which was more crowded but nothing crazy. Sand was soft and water beautiful. Saw three turtles. We caught the 4pm ferry back. Was a lovely, relaxing day! S

    Water Island
My family of 5 with 3 kids (ages 14, 16, 18) visited Water Island when we were visiting ST Thomas and St John. On the last day of our week vacation to St Thomas we spent the day on Water Island. This was probably our most enjoyable day of the entire trip. The ferry from Crown Bay Marina was $15/person roundtrip. Parking at the marina cost $15 for the entire day. Once we were on the island we rented a golf cart from Rachel's Rentals. We drove around the island. We headed to the fort on the island and were blown away by how cool the fort was to explore. There are tunnels that are open to walk through and to stand on top of and get a 360 degree view of the surroundings. We then went to Honeymoon Beach. We had lunch at Dinghy's right on the beach. While we were waiting for our food a couple of us waited in the ocean. The food was excellent. There were probably less than 50 people total on the beach. They had anything and everything you could want. Chair rentals, cabanas, snorkel gear, kayaks, pickleball and beach tennis were also available on the beach. The beach/ocean were so perfect that our family stayed until 4 when we had to return our golf cart and head back to St Thomas. We all said that it was unexpectedly one of the best days of our vacation. I highly recommend taking a trip to Water Island if you get the chance

The US government bought this island from the Danish East Asiatic Company for $10,000 in 1944. Their original intent was to use it for defense of St. Thomas and built a fort and set up artillery. After
WW II, it was used for testing chemical weapons to use in tropical environments. It later transferred to the Department of the Interior and, from 1992-2005, it was transferred to the US Virgin Islands. The Water Island Ferry costs $5/person each way. If you want to park at the marina and stay for longer than 2 hours, you need to go to the Marina office and buy a parking pass for $10. Once we got to the island, we were informed that there are no hiking trails and no ruins to see...just the beach. The beach is small and nothing special.

In the past, ferry ride over was only $10/person plus $10 to park for the day. Water taxi/ferry is now $15/person. Chairs and umbrellas used to be free of charge if you were eating/drinking and spending the day. Now a chair is $10 as is an umbrella. Beach is not raked any longer. Sand is just so much nicer at Megan’s Bay. If going with a large family it may be a costly adventure to the beach. Water is still beautiful. Many moored boats due to COVID restrictions and the fact they can only go to USVI.

I visited the Virgin Islands during this pandemic when it started opening in June 2020. I took a side trip to the Water Island and I am so amazed and over the moon with the petite island particularly to the hospitality of the handful of locals who live there. On my way back to the ferry, I local offered me a lift from the Fort Segarra. It was a wow since it's a walk down the hill to the jetty. When you visit, do not forget to visit Fort Segarra on top of the and include this in your beach activities on the island.

It is $15/pp for the round trip ferry, and to see the island, you really need to rent a golf cart ($55 for 2-4 people, $70 for a six seater. Take a credit card and drivers license.) It also costs to park at the ferry stop. The renowned Honeymoon Beach was rocky and not as nice as many free beaches on St Thomas. If you have war history buffs in your group, the bunker is interesting. The smaller beach is just for viewing. I felt badly that I talked our group into this and wasted the last day of our vacation.

This may have been my favorite day of our vacation. The hourly ferry is easy to use ($15 pp for visitors RT) and takes about 10 minutes to get over to Water Island.

When you dock there is a tiny outdoor post office/library and a place to rent a golf cart for the day. We did this and it was incredibly fun to tool around the island this way. (This was called Rachael’s Rentals, and it was $55 for the day. I also saw golf carts for rent at Honeymoon Beach, but I’m not sure how much those cost.)

Be sure to get a shaved ice at the Crossroads and have a sandwich at Dinghy’s bar at Honeymoon Beach. If you have a cart, you can park it and take a short hike down to another beach on the windward side, where you can see birds swooping in to catch their fish.

Oh, and the WWII fort was surprisingly fascinating. Since it was constructed as a guard point for the harbor, you can get a terrific view up there of the whole harbor of St. Thomas. We were the only people there on our visit. There’s even a picnic table up there, if only we had thought to pack a lunch!

We've come here every year that we come to STT either for our one week timeshare or via cruise. This year however was quite disappointing. The water taxi rate has gone up dramatically. As I recall we used to pay $5pp round trip, now it's 15 each. So a family of 6, like us cost $90 to get to the island and back. And, to top it off, they now charge $10 to park. So it's now a $100 day just to go to the beach. One of the highlights of going here is to get some food at Dinghy's Beach bar, but it's not worth the $100 to get here. The beach is decent and you'll surely see turtles.

Water Island is a great activity while visiting St. Thomas. Water Ferry from Crown Bay. $15 per adult round trip, and kids 11 and under 11 are $5. Reserve a golf cart from Rachels Rentals beforehand. Just send her a text, and you’re good to go. If you don’t have a cart, you’ll be walking up and down a lot of hills. It’s fun, but your kids will be annoying. Two choices for eating- Dingy’s or Heidi’s. Dingy’s is on the beach, and it’s a bigger scale bar type setting. Heidi’s is up the hill and overlooks the water, and food truck style. We went to Heidi’s and loved it, however, I heard reviews for both were great. Go to Honeymoon beach, go see the WWII fort, drive to get a shaved ice, and talk to some of the locals (they’re all super friendly). Great day trip. Get in line a little early for the ferry ride back.

One more glorious, relaxing stay at Chateau Monroe at the summit on Water Isle in St Thomas USVI while watching enormous cruise ships maneuver “K” turns right off your double decks. Daily Sunsets are remarkable. The Crossing shop small but filled with unique local WI Artists ware and shaved ice treats. Limestone Beach filled with ‘finds’
Honeymoon Beach is calming and offers snorkeling and dining on the beach at Dingy’s Bar. Heidi’s Hilltop Bar has breathtaking views and good eating.
Ferry over to St Thomas for more shopping & dining.
Hosts Brad & Colette think of everything while making your vacation one you wish never ended!
