“The Best Thing We Did on the Trip”

Longer Review

We visited St. Thomas, USVI, for the first time in 2021, and had a great time. The trip was, in large part, to celebrate our son and his friend graduating high school and being ready for college in the fall.

We asked the boys to pick something to do and they both picked visiting Pirate Treasure - A Shipwreck Museum. I’ll admit… 1) I’m unsure I would have picked this visit, and 2) that’s a benefit of family… doing things someone else picks, and enjoying something new that you otherwise would not have gotten to do on your own… - -> because 3) Pirate Treasure was great fun!

You learn and experience so much at Pirate Treasure - A Shipwreck Museum!

They have a history of the Virgin Islands and of pirates, the good and the not-so-good… the not-so-good including keel-hauling, marooning, walking the plank, and more. Biographies of several pirates, including the pirate who inspired Dred Pirate Roberts in “The Princess Bride,” Women Pirates, and even Jewish Pirates.

They have the history of the steamship Republic, a steamboat with paddle wheels on each side, which sunk shortly after the Civil War. A veteran who served at Gettysburg was on the ship, and they have a letter from the soldier to his wife describing the terrible sinking. 51,000 coins were lost when the Republic sunk and a remote submersible brought up the coins, one-by-one. Pirate Treasure has a version of the remote submersible, one that you can control to pick up some quarters - it’s fun,y and not as easy as it may sound… a good challenge.

We also learned that the US almost purchased the Virgin Islands sooner, in the late 1800s, but an earthquake and two tsunamis delayed that; then WWI spurred the purchase; the Virgins have been part of the US since 1918.

We learned that Jesuit priest Father Benito Vines, based in Havana, Cuba, was the first person to forecast a hurricane, in 1857… based on his own weather measurements of barometric pressure, wind speed, etc.

This is definitely a great place to visit, and the boys’ favorite thing we did when out-and-about on St. Thomas.

Outside, as we departed, our daughter captured macro photos of flowers in a pot outside the door - great fun with photography.

Thank you, Pirate Treasure - A Shipwreck Museum!!

Interesting Facts
Jun 2021
We had heard about this place from another couple staying on the island. We went to check it out. It has alot of history of the wreaks around the area and has treasures that have been found there. Definitely worth checking out if you like that kind of stuff. The guy who runs it is very nice and will answer any questions you have.

Informative and fun

Near the cruise stop, this is worth stopping by, especially if you need to get out of the sun or the rain for a couple hours. The gentleman working was exceptionally friendly. The adults and a 7 year old found items of interest. There is history and interactive exhibits.

Great option especially if u need a break from sun. The museum is super interesting if u r interested in pirates, treasure and St. Thomas history, u will learn it here. Better yet, the employees are SO well informed and one is a diver and part of a secret society that dives shipwrecks. He told us awesome stories and showed us great pics. Ask the diver about the discovery channel episode. Very cool!

Best Museum on the island

Best museum of the US VI!!! We went on the last day we were on St. Thomas as a bit of fun filler time- we wished we gave it at least two more hours than we did because we enjoyed the various exhibits and artifacts. The museum is very professionally done, at least two floors in size and covers most (if not all) of the known history of the area. Well worth the cost of admission, especially compared to local fare for everything else.

We had a chance to chat with the owners, the original scuba divers/treasure hunters of most of the artifacts on display. They have a passion for their work and have a deep fund of knowledge local history, shipwrecks and science of restoration/recovery! Very friendly staff, their souvenir shop is great for families, and is close by the other big tourist locations.

Fantastic museum. Having a scheduled time to go was actually really nice as we had a personal tour guide who could further explain things and answer questions. We spent about an hour and a half and the kids bought some great souvenirs. I highly recommend this place.
