I didn't realize all 3 companies that do bio bay tours on St Croix would completely book out for a lunar cycle, so my wife and I were stuck without a reservation on our mini-moon. We put our name on waiting lists at all 3 companies, and luckily Virgin Kayak had an opening on the last day of their tours for the mid-March lunar cycle at 8:45pm. It was definitely worth it. The foot-powered kayaks were brand new, super nice. It was a windy night but no issues. Some schools of fish would scare easily and jump/skip across the water landing in a few boats, and one hit me square in the chest...some extra entertainment. The guide had epically bad jokes, which is to be expected and appreciated but the delivery could use work....shorter pause after the punchline so it doesn't get too awkward. As long as you have reasonable expectations, the bio bay is amazing (my wife expected it to be much, much brighter with the water basically glowing). They provide nets that do an awesome job of exciting / lighting up the creatures in the water and a few boats caught the particularly bright blue comb jelly fish. The guide provides great science and history lessons along the way. Definitely recommend a bio bay trip in St Croix, and Virgin Kayaks were great.

Our family of 6 did the bioluminescence tour. The ages were 72, 50, 43, 15, 10 and 6. It was amazing everyone loved it and we would highly recommend it. If you are not an experienced kayaker then I would suggest you do this tour. We think it would have been very challenging to paddle with oars. These kayaks made it much easier. The staff was informative and friendly. Bioluminescence bay is a must do in St. Croix. Make sure you book it in advance if you wait until you get to St Croix all trips will likely be booked up.

This was our third time doing the Virgin Kayak day tour, each time while on a cruise that stopped for the day in St. Croix. Bryan and Jill Updike provide a wonderful tour.

Each time we have had an excellent time, and thoroughly enjoyed the information Bryan shares on the tour; his knowledge and passion for the island are amazing. Jill is so responsive and helpful with questions.

The groups are smaller than we'd find booking an excursion through the ship...plus the HUGE benefit of the foot paddle kayaks (they make paddling into the wind very easy). This time our tour had 7, including us, which made for a very personalized tour.

Transportation from the cruise pier was very easy. The Transportation Area at the end of the pier arranges the ride to/from (the same driver returns for pickup) at preset fees.

We highly recommend Bryan and Jill's Virgin Kayak tour!!

Had no idea the Bio Bays were such delicate balances of chemistry and biology so the trip was very interesting and educational. wished the time in the BioBay had been longer. The overall tour lasted long due to seeing other areas in the river and Sugar Bay. With a large group and a windy night you may need to stay close to the guide to hear the dialogue. Seeing the different types of biolum and especially the blue jellyfish was very cool. The quality of the kayaks and the foot paddle was also excellent as it left your hands free to touch the water, steer, and catch the jellyfish.

Had a great time on the Salt River Bay tour with JT and Jen. It was such a calm and relaxing excursion and they are wonderful guides. The bioluminescence is incredible but just kayaking under the constellations at night, with the guides explaining the history and ecology of the island, was worth the price of admission.

I did not love the pedal kayaks (gave me a bit of a backache) but I don’t think there is a better alternative. With no paddles, they allow you to be handsfree so you can stick your hands in the water and get the full experience of the bioluminescence.

This was a very unique experience. It is not a walk along the beach and you see the little glow as you might believe based on pictures. Rather, this is all kayak the entire way. The kayaks as nice and are all foot pedal operated which made them loads easier to use and almost effortless. In fact, I wouldn't mind having one of those.
The tour itself was interesting and we had a good guide. I don't know how difficult it is for others, but it was impossible to get a picture of anything due to the light of the camera and the relatively soft glow of the little critters. So, dont think you'll be getting lots of cool pics like you see online. Nevertheless, this was well worth the experience to see such a cool natural phenomenon of nature.

Since moving to the island this experience has been on our list- but wanted to wait till guests came to visit, now its on our “must do when come to STX” list. Moonless night, calm waters, & perfect temperature set this trip up to be amazing! Foot peddled powered kayaks used to cruise around Salt River under a blanket of stars. Informative guide with deep knowledge of the ecosystem provides a running commentary as we paddle to the perfect spot (its a good leg workout!). They have double & single boats & full safety gear! There are other groups also in the water so it could get crowded but all the companies seem to work together to allow for the best experience for all. Once in the bioluminescence area, it becomes magical!! As you drag a hand held net in the water & see the silver streaks of light you are captivated! Never quite sure which was more beautiful- the stars above or the glow below!
Plan ahead when booking ur trip- slots fill up! Its a perfect evening activity!

Highly recommend the bioluminescent kayak tour. Considering this is one of the few bioluminescent bays in the world, you would be remiss to not check it out while you are here. Virgin Kayak did an excellent job of guiding us out to the bay, providing great history and stories along the way and letting us roam around the bay enjoying the comb jellyfish. A truly wonderful experience.

We had three couples that prepaid for a moonlight kayak adventure. When we arrived there was confusion on whether a mask was to be worn and another staff member updated the leader that they were no longer needed. This was trip that we were all looking forward too however, the weather was risky. The winds were high and there were elderly people on the tour. The lead person was impossible to be heard despite other staff that were in the back and they couldn’t hear either. The trip was not calm until we hit a bay and the bioluminescent pond. Once it was calm it was a fabulous experience and the bioluminescence was a once in a life time experience. We were the only tour group out that night,,,perhaps others leaned on the side of safety. On the way back we had a torrential down pour of rain which became very risky. The boats were supercool and easy to navigate compared to the oars. I recommend to be cautious when booking.

We toured the bioluminescent bay off Salt River with Virgin Kayak on April 14 and thought it was one of the highlights of our week in St. Croix. One tip in planning for the tour is to aim for a night with little moon. We were about three days off a new moon, so the stars were out. The kayaks built for two are very steady, and we preferred the foot peddles to arm paddles. At the bay, dragging a hand or net (provided) through the water created a glowing blue swirl. When peddling, the paddles under each kayak made them look like a car with neon lighting on the undercarriage. Fish, which don't glow themselves, but which agitate the water, dart below the surface looking like blue shadows. Watch out -- small fish sometimes literally jump into the kayak. We netted three jelly fish, which don't sting and which you can hold in your hand (slimy). The jelly fish, which are slightly bigger than a golf ball, glow blue in the net or when you hold them, although you need to put them back in the water quickly. Despite the cost, we really enjoyed the tour.
