I love Tobago! This is or should be....the ultimate Caribbean island. The people are laid back and lovely(for the most part)....but! It's always the but that kills a place. If an island is unsafe then the Americans won't come! If the Americans don't come - then there's no money, investment, nor necessary standards for tourism etc etc.

Why am I discussing this you might ask....?! Well Mount Irvine was, once upon a time, a prestigious golf course which had hosted some major tournaments. But that was a looooooong time ago! It's hard to describe the golf course as a golf course anymore, which actually is a tragedy as it's a beautiful piece of real estate with classic Caribbean views and scenery. Nowadays despite the staff's(fantastic people) best efforts, the greens are agricultural(hit and hope folks!)and one can easily lose one's ball on the fairways as I did many times. Many of the fairways resemble the rough in a PGA tour event, where the commentators would herald the upcoming shot as a challenge. That's just the fairways folks .....the rough is often a no go zone. Bring plenty of balls.....

Alastair is the only caddie there and whilst he's in the 'evening' of his life is great company. I've never really understood anything that he's said and often have to push the trolley myself he's always a delight to have around and to share a beer with afterwards(!), because there won't be any other signs of life!!!! When I've played there I'm normally alone and there are few members and almost no visitors. It's a crime because if the fairways and greens were workable it would be delightful. Nikeesha the lady that runs the bar is a princess and a welcome sight for sore eyes when you stagger back up the last fairway drenched in sweat and dangerously parched. There's no water on the course, no girl in a buggy with drinks and the pro shop is spartan. Be prepared and forewarned.

So sad to see the decline of a once great course. Sadly this is a thermometer for the local economy. With some dreadfully violent incidents in the past the island has lost so much of its business.

I wish I could recommend visiting Tobago to play this course but I can't. If you find yourself there then definitely give it a go but arrive with zero expectations. Enjoy the walk and watch out for the birds that dive bomb you because they're protecting their nests! That's about the only danger on the course.....!

Quite disappointing as the course was ill prepared, possibly due to time of year! Managed to get round the course, and could never be disappointed with the stunning views throughout!

It’s a golf course and most island tours seem to take you here. Views are ok but at least he beers are cold..caribe or the much preferred Stud.

Visited Mount Irvine Golf Club last week because the Plantations golf course had a competition on, well what a difference, uncut fairways, very poor greens staff sadly lacking in customer care, and the price was horrendous.
I realise that this golf course has not been maintained for several years, but there is no justification in charging outrageous green fees when the course is in this condition.
Surely it is better having 20 people playing $20. Than two people playing $50.
If you want a decent game of golf good service afterwards avoid this golf course until the improvements kick in.

The web site for this course is misleading. Given that this was voted the number 1 Caribbean course in 1994 it has hit rock bottom. I am sure that the professional must be embarrassed to have his name associated with it.
Positives. The views are great on some of the holes 17th and 18th. The course design is very good... Uses the land well and contours holes to the landscape. One member of staff gave me a lift back to the hotel which was very kind of her. But as the course was virtually deserted she could do so.
Negatives. No score card or course planner. No caddy on duty ( not crucial but as a solo golfer the company and advice would have been valuable). Poor signage and clear pathways between one green and next tee. At times it felt as though you were riding off road on the fairways. I have played some courses with poor greens ( Canvey for example). These are the worse in 25 years of playing. The 15th green was 75% bare! Poor rough maintenance, with piles of cut grass rotting. No sand in the bunkers and grass growing in them. Therefore no need for rakes not one was seen. Tees below par. Virtually every green had small piles of debris scattered around do the edges. No course planner and no fairway distance markers.

What has happened to this course? It's a shame as with a lot of investment this could be a fantastic course. If this review hasn't put you off then consider this.
Golf club hire... TT$170 @ £20.00+ the clubs were very old, very very dirty, handles rubber withered. And in a bag dirty torn falling apart.
Course fee and buggy hire TT$550 @ £80.00+

The course professional Steven Ames should take a good look at what he is putting his name to.

I visited this course in 2019 following investment that had been made to restore it to its former glory, the future looked bright, however it is now 2023 and the course is closed, long fairway grass, undefined greens, no flagsticks seemingly no hope that it will ever be used again.
I really don’t understand why, because the views from this course are sensational, however it seems to have been rarely used , and the only option was to close.
It seems to me that the prohibitive pricing put golfers off and the number of golfers fell away dramatically, when will accountants learn that 10 people paying $20 is better than four people paying $60.
At least Plantations Golf course is open with ongoing upgrades supported by an increasing number of golfers.

As a frequent visitor to Tobago and a keen golfer, I've played the course many times and, in recent years, have been disillusioned by the way the great layout of this course had been compromised by the terrible standards of maintenance.
I must commend the investment made by the hotel and efforts of the new course manager, Jason, and his team to bring the course back to a condition that has transformed the way it looks and plays.
The rough is no longer knee-high hay, fairways are defined and the greens are well grassed for the first time in years (possibly too well-grassed during my last visit, but I imagine that was to protect growth during a long dry spell). The water hazards have been cleared of weed and even have working fountains that improve the aesthetics!
There is still room for improvement, but if the efforts of the last 12 months continue, then there's a real chance that the course will be restored to its former glory.

I recently played this course for the first time in 12 months and was delighted to see how the new management team are bringing it back to life after many years with no TLC.
What, a year ago, was a rather drab chrysalis is fast becoming a butterfly.
The present weather conditions, particularly the lack of any rain for several weeks are clearly not conducive to lush grass and fast greens but how good the course looks and plays now, as opposed to a year ago, is testament to a great deal of investment and hard work both by management and their whole team.
Keep up the good work; we will be back and ready to play in 12 months

In 2017 I reviewed Mount Irvine Golf course and thought it was dreadful, however I visited again yesterday and I was staggered at the improvements made so far, we now have clearly defined fairways, greens with grass on them, bunkers that you can identify and the beginnings of a new golf course springing to life.
Apparently it is due to a change of heart with investment and the appointment of a new Aussie pro who is driving the project, given the improvements made in 12 months time we could see something special.
The only concern I have is that usage is still very poor, this is due in my opinion to vastly overpriced fees for a golf course that does not justify them.

May wife and son and I played Mt Irvine GC last week and while I understand the complaints in the other reviews I’d prefer to focus on the positive. It’s a golf course in the Carribean.
Clearly , it gets almost no play but at least it’s not crowded. It is too expensive once you rent clubs and get a cart but it is an interesting and challenging layout. Nice design. Do bring extra balls and a relaxed attitude and you’ll have a blast. We did.
