We had a rental car for three days. On the first day we headed up the Caribbean coast from our hotel near the airport. The first beach of any size that we reached was Mount Irvine Bay. This consisted of two parts with the Mount Irvine Hotel in the middle. You can park down a track near the start of the first part of the beach. We had a very pleasant swim in the calm water. Although the sea has a sandy bottom, it is always a good idea to wear swim shoes to deal with occasional stones and pieces of broken coral. The sky was blue. Hardly anyone else was on our section of the beach. We had a good time there.

Stayed at Mount Irvine Hotel so this was our local beach but well used by tourists and locals alike. This meant complimentary comfortable sun beds and umbrella, and the hotels food and drink facility, but there was a lot more - good sandy and well-tended beach, clear warm water and some snorkeling close to the beach. Beyond this little corner of the bay was a water sports facility (and local football pitch), fresh fish for sale at the roadside behind the beach, and at the far end of the bay 5 minutes walk away a surfers beach (with real surf) and local food stalls. Some days it also became a chapel with full immersion baptisms. Beautiful and fascinating

Lovely location with sunbeds under beautiful almond trees. Small restaurant serving cheap but well cooked lunches. I have not given it five stars as the swimming is restricted to a smallish area and rocky underfoot. Otherwise excellent

This is a review of the private beach for the Mt. Irvine Bay Resort Hotel. That said, it's not a private beach per se, as anyone can use it - and lots do. The advantage of being a resident is that you get free loungers and umbrella. Non-residents have to pay for these but can bring their own chairs. There's lots of shade so you don't really need an umbrella. The beach itself is lovely golden sand with turquoise water lapping along the shore. There's reefs very close by so it's easy to snorkel out and view the corals and plentiful fish. The current was never very strong. Neither beach or sea got very busy while we were there. There's no watersports on this beach although there is kayaking or surfing on the next door public beach. There is a beach bar run by the hotel. Drinks are not too pricey nor is the food - choice of salads, burgers, grilled food, etc. You can eat at the tables in the bar or take your food back to the loungers. Everyone seems to clean up after themselves, so I didn't notice any litter. There are also clean toilets - free for residents, a token 2TTD charge for everyone else, which is literally pennies.

I loved the beach in Mount Irvine. It's great for swimming (within the life guard flags) good for surfing, has a bar and changing/showering/toilet area, has sun beds if you want them and isn't too crowded.

The Mt. Irvine Bay (by the hotel & not the beach facility) was the most exquisite of all the beaches I visited in Tobago. The kids were able to play unrestricted on the water's edge because there were no waves or strong currents. Even the non-swimmer adults were able to thoroughly enjoy soaking up to their necks in crystal clear water. The best for me was the amazing little reef with a wide variety of sea life that could captivate you for hours. There are no snorkelling guides so you are on your own and would need your own equipment. There is limited parking on the street but I guess that helps with keeping the bay from being overcrowded. Will definitely spend more time there on my next trip.

This reef area was absolutely amazing for snorkeling. No tour guide required. We had our own snorkels so we drove right up and jumped in. The reef starts immediately at the shore. It is pretty shallow very far out with plenty to see. We went on a Saturday in June and there were only a few other families. It was NOT overcrowded in the least. There were good reggae tunes playing at the beach side bar, we had scrumptious roti for lunch, there was shade for the kids, and little picnic tables with thatched roofs to use for free. If you don't have snorkel equipment, there are some available for rent. We saw an ton of fish, a large variety of coral, no waves..Just simply a perfectly amazing day at the beach. This is one of the things that sets Tobago apart.

I came here as a novice surfer apprehensive about getting smashed on the reef. After a 2 hour session with Jason I caught the 10 best waves of my life. Even if you don't get in the water it's a cool place to just sit and soak up the sun while watching the locals show how it's done.

Got married here, it was great. Mt Irvine beach is one of the few with a sunset over the water. Lovely pics.

Water was lovely but beach is quite dirty. Lots of bits of trash, plastic. Left behind clothing etc. around and mixed in with the sand. They don’t seem to be raking up the leaves n trash anymore. Only the area in front of the bar is kept clean. Rest of the beach especially near the parking is dirty! This beach used to be a great spot - one of my faves in Tobago but it’s on the decline sadly…
