This historic building is one of the first you see after leaving the cruise ship terminal at Port Zante in Basseterre. It contains many fascinating artefacts related to the history of St Kitts and a visit is an interesting distraction.

What struck me about this museum was the simplicity. The message and history of the people of the island on one hand pains your heart and on the other, applauds their resilience and resolve. Lots of information and chronological presentation in a humble but effective manner. My early teen kids enjoyed this museum as well.

Walk beyond the burgeoning cruise terminal and find the authentic history. An imposing, stone building houses the story. Read the posters on the wall outside, documenting the island’s heritage. Talk to the lovely staff in the gift shop housing quiet souvenirs. Look out for the safe behind the cash desk - John Tann, Newgate Street, London EC4! History has a way of jumping out at you.

Small but evocative museum which seeks to and successfully balances the history of St Kitts. Begins with the Amerindians, then European colonialism and slavery, then modern St Kitts. No part is given precedence. Air conditioning helped aid concentration!

This museum may not have the interactive video displays that the MTV generation requires to maintain attention. But it has a succinct chronology presented in readable fonts at a height that doesn't require squatting. A low bar, it may seem, but not one that some better resourced museums pass. I learned a lot about this nation's history, ethnography, economics, politics, culture and sports. The staff were exceedingly engaged and friendly.
