Port Zante is an Average Cruise Ship Port

We arrived at Port Zante and waited for a shore excursion to begin. Their excursion departures were chaotic. When we returned to port we walked around a bit and shopped for a couple souvenirs before returning to our ship. There were men with live monkeys at the port and they were having visitors take photos with them.

Love love love St Kitts but Port Zante isn't a part I want to visit again only spent 10mins here because I'd had enough v v touristy designed purely for the cruise ships one big souvenir shop not for me. If I was on a cruise ship I might think differently but I'm staying in the island and I'm just not interested. Hired a car and drove right round the entire island much better way to spend couple of hours!!

St Kitts is a stunningly beautiful island that I have visited before. Recently I experienced it again via cruise ship. This entails being funneled through the very large and somewhat tatty Port Zante development. A number of empty storefronts, a lot of clashing signs and banners, and the same shops you see everywhere, all selling the same thing. A product of the early 2000s real estate boom, Port Zante felt like a poorly-maintained suburban Miami discount mall. Nobody working there looked particularly happy, either. Of course there are restaurants and bars serving the cruise crowd.

I was disappointed by the fact St Kitts felt they needed this fake real estate project instead of the real St Kitts, which is gorgeous and friendly. Perhaps I’m alone in my opinion.

Classic cruise port

Port Zante is an intro to St. Kitts for cruise passengers. It's a bigger port we encountered on our 9 days cruise. Many shops selling everything from trinkets, over t-shirts to expensive jewelry.
Many tour tours await you there, however I suggest arranging a car rental beforehand and exploring the island on your own. We did that with Bullseye whose representative waited us in the port.

Baby Monkeys in the cruise port

Totally appalled that in 2023 Vendors were using tiny baby monkeys for tourist photo’s and even more appalled that people were letting him. He had 4 tiny babies, where are they from? They need to be with their mums. What happens when they grow and are no use to him. I have written to the Minister for Tourism for St Kitts and I really hope that cruise ship passengers stop paying so animal abuse like this is not rewarded. It’s a nice port but this totally spoilt my day.

I loved the handicrafts market, the nice restaurants, and a lot of souvenirs to buy. Also free wifi everywhere. Good cigarettes and rum prices.

Tourist shops like any other island marketplace

This is the place to grab tshirts, mugs and all of the trinkets you need to take home emblazoned with St Kitts on it. The coffee shop is worth visiting.

Shout out for Chutneys Indian street food

It’s a nice area but avoid the Cheers bar at all costs and watch your drink too at the bar inside the food court. Drinks are expensive, taste watered down and taste watery.

The food in the food court however is on another level. We had great curried goat from the jerk place but the star of the show was the tandoori prawns and the fish samosas, just divine. I eat Indian food maybe once a week and this was some of the best I ever tasted, so go try it you won’t be disappointed.

Cruise Port Fun

Of all the cruise port stops this one had the most shops. A lot of "luxury" items for cheap, gram stones. Some corner store type places. However the monkey men and taxi companies will swarm you at first. Learn to be firm and say no. The monkey vendors will ask if you want to meet the monkey and you'll pay exorbitant amounts. If that's your thing go for it. We got a taxi just outside the main port with a very lovely gentlemen who didn't holler or be intrusive. Recommended to get a taxi outside there to avoid the hassle and dramatics. Overall I liked the port.

Our first view of Basseterre from ship

Impressive port entrance for our day tour of St.Kitts. We had a little time to wander the shops around the keyside and enjoyed ice creams.
