Well after being off the travel grid for so long it was nice to finally return safely to the traveling world. I've been meaning to get here since I was 17. Now Basseterre is so much bigger now the lovely hustle and bustle of life going on everywhere. The vibrant colours and the wonderful landscape as we docked in port. Fantastic port area for those with mobility issues selling all the local and typical tourist souvenirs needed. Even though currency is East Caribbean dollars most shops prices are in US dollars so budget wisely in this area. We were able to get a local craft mask for 25 us dollars (large) wall hanging about 18 inches in length. Thought well worth the price considering the effort put into this craft.

The first time my ship stopped here it was not much worth stopping (2007). My most recent stop was before the major hurricane in 2017 and it was very well established. If you want beautiful, mined stones and jewelry you MUST go to Royal Gems. They will barder prices and take very good care of preparing you with the necessary appraisal documents. I still get coupons and personal calls from Vinnie and will go back for my engagement and wedding rings. Trust worthy, honest people. I bought my birthstone, a 1.2 ct Emerald with layered baguette diamonds and I get compliments everyday.

We arrived by cruise ship, walked through the cruise terminal to be greeted by a steel band playing traditional music. We had booked a trip around the island so we got on a side open bus giving us natural air conditioning. Our guide was great and very informative as we passed through the centre of Basseterre and then onto numerous tourist sites and the coastline. Back at the cruise port we had a wonder around the numerous shops for gifts and then went in an upstairs bar for a drink before heading back onto our ship.

Our cruise ship docked here. There was no security clearance required to go ashore other than the ship's. Returning, the ship's room card and a photo ID were required. There are a lot of shops, restaurants and a casino immediately upon exiting the port. Some of the shops have very aggressive people trying to get you to come in. We did not go to the duty free shop, but the prices in the stores seemed high but that is expected of a tourist area. Beware of the guy outside the port with monkeys taking your picture with an animal. He said it would cost $10 for three pictures. My wife handed him a $20. He took three pictures, one each and one together with monkeys on us. Then when she asked for the $10 change, he refused to give back saying it was $10 a person even though we only got three photos. Again, beware of this shyster!

Of all the cruise port stops this one had the most shops. A lot of "luxury" items for cheap, gram stones. Some corner store type places. However the monkey men and taxi companies will swarm you at first. Learn to be firm and say no. The monkey vendors will ask if you want to meet the monkey and you'll pay exorbitant amounts. If that's your thing go for it. We got a taxi just outside the main port with a very lovely gentlemen who didn't holler or be intrusive. Recommended to get a taxi outside there to avoid the hassle and dramatics. Overall I liked the port.

It seems welcoming and normal… at first. The prices are good and I was able to snag some cheap souvenirs. Some of the shop owners are nice. Some are just bizarre. Trying to find my way back to the ship, I had a strange encounter with a local guy with monkeys. It’s hard to know the area. I left the port to find a bakery and struck out. The surrounding area didn’t look/feel safe to me. I was just having a hard time reading it. If a guy asks you if you want pics with monkeys, say no and BE ASSERTIVE. Because he will just move forward anyways if you allow it to continue and the monkeys seem very sad then he will tell you “that will be $20” and it’s WEIRD.

Love love love St Kitts but Port Zante isn't a part I want to visit again only spent 10mins here because I'd had enough v v touristy designed purely for the cruise ships one big souvenir shop not for me. If I was on a cruise ship I might think differently but I'm staying in the island and I'm just not interested. Hired a car and drove right round the entire island much better way to spend couple of hours!!

Visited this place because our cruise ship docked here; a real tourist souvenir spot.
Countless shops that look very similar, in principle you will need a maximum of an hour.
There are countless taxi drivers around, don't just choose the first one, you can bargain!
There are also people walking around with monkeys that they want to sit on your shoulders (of course for a fee!)

Stopped off here as itis where the ship docked for the day. Taxi/tour reps all over you instantly but get through them towards edge of port area at car parks and there are far more easy going less hasselly types. The area full of the typical souvenir and craft shops which sell the same sort of stuff . Several cafes for food or drinks.

Fairly typical cruise port shopping mall attached to the cruise ship terminal. It contains everything you would expect in this type of place: shop, bars, café, etc. It's a short 5 minute walk to the town. Lots going on and very Caribbean.
