The narrow gauge St. Kitts scenic railway is one of the most beautiful...

The narrow gauge St. Kitts scenic railway is one of the most beautiful train rides in the world. Originally built in 1912 to deliver sugarcane from the fields to the sugar mill in Basseterre, the "Last Railway in the West Indies" now provides a fascinating way for visitors to see the island from the comfort of modern passenger train cars and sightseeing buses.

The railway hugs the Northeastern coastline where spectacular vistas of ocean, surf, cliffs, and lush vegetation surround you. The train rolls across tall steel bridges spanning deep ""ghuts"", or canyons, and winds through small villages and farms. Dark green rainforests are skirted by rippling fields of sugar can, with the volcanic cone of Mt. Liamuiga rising above the railway.

This unique rail and highway experience allows visitors the opportunity to see the island in a very short period of time. Your guide will point out all the sights as the train passes old sugar estates with abandoned windmills and chimneys.

This was an enjoyable way to see the scenic coastline of St Kitts ... First we took a beautiful Catamaran from the main harbor to our smaller port approx. 30 -45 mins away depending on the wind and weather ... We enjoyed our sail to our Scenic Railway starting point. The whole operation was very smooth and no wasted time.... More

This shore excursion on our Carnival cruise looked like a nice, relaxing way to see St. Kitts while still allowing half the day to spend some time at a beach. And that's exactly what it was. The ride was relaxing, the coastal scenery was beautiful (at least it was once we got past the land fill, the pig farm and... More

Our 2nd day on St. Kitts my husband and I hired a driver (Tony 869-662-2932) recommended by our hotel to take us on a 5-hour private tour of the island, including stops at Romney Manor, Brimstone Hill Fortress and Black Rocks which was $150. On our seventh day we took the St. Kitts Scenic Railway tour that we had booked... More

If you are a narrow gauge train aficionado and/or want to see all of St Kitts unspoiled coastline -- this is your tour. We've heard this tour only runs through the cruise ships and it was a little pricey ($90). There was an open bar, but we are not big drinkers -- I got a couple of virgin drinks that... More

It was a shame that the commentator has no off button. We were in carriage 4 and he was in carriage 1 and even with a shocking sound system and the screeching wheels we were aware of the endless waffle. Fortunately the poor level of sound meant we didn't hear everything he said but I pity the people on carriage... More

This tour costs 79 US. It's the old sugar cane track and goes about half way round the top part of the island. The top is open but the seating is basic. You get virgin and /or alcoholic cocktails on request and one very small sweet snack. Personally I think a bit more food for so much money would have... More

We just came back from a Royal Caribbean Cruise we took the Rail and Sail excision which for us was the best of both worlds. We booked this excursion with Royal Caribbean before our cruise. We tried to book it from the railway's website, but were directed back to the cruise line. Roads on St. Kits as not good and the railway provides a way to see the island without the hassle of renting a car. We were on the top "open" deck and had... More
