- Neil R45 contributionsDemonstration of Caribbean cruise and history of thus former plantation house. This historical building was a former plantation on the Island of St Kitts, Basseterre. We went on a tour of the house and also had a Caribbean cookery lesson of 3 dishes. Our guide Maya and Chef Shay did a marvellous, entertaining job, teaching us the history of the house and demonstrating the skills of preparing Caribbean culinary cuisines. There is a beautiful garden to walk around, rum tasting and a gift shop.Visited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 9, 2023
- Scott FCheyenne, Wyoming187 contributionsInteresting & Beautiful! We visited as part of an included excursion on our Viking cruise. The curation is really well done & the staff are extremely friendly & knowledgeable. The gardens are simply beautiful & everything is labeled so you know what you are looking at. The bar is a great place to relax in the shade & enjoy local drinks.Visited December 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 23, 2023
- ORDFlierChicago, Illinois225 contributionsCan’t wait to try recipes at home!We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We happen to be the only two in the class, so our individualized attention was super. But Chef Che was excellent explaining the history of the Plantation and the reincarnation of the estate. We can’t wait to get home and make some of the dishes that were demonstrated for us, then we consumed. She also does a rum tasting from Shipwreck Rum if you’re interested too. Overall a great experience.Visited December 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 29, 2023
- MattColumbus, Ohio29 contributionsInteresting history, great rumWe did the Rum Shots tour with Doreen. We learned about the history of Fairview from its start as a sugarcane plantation to the first bed and breakfast in St Kitts to its current incarnation. Then we stepped into the “conference room” for a rum tasting. In between tastings we learned about the history and process of making rum. Even my friend who doesn’t really like rum walked away with a bottle. Thank you, Doreen!Visited January 2024Traveled with friendsWritten January 19, 2024

I would highly recommend this to anyone interested in local cooking and enjoying a well orchestrated meal preparation class and great tasting food. The grounds and house were nice to see and the view of the Caribbean wan an added plus.Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 9, 2024
- hbhakhRoanoke, Virginia2,282 contributionsNice excursionWe did the culinary demo/rum tasting from our cruise ship. This is the second time that we've done a similar tour. The bus picked us up promptly and was clean and had good AC. The drive to the Great House is not very long. When we arrived, we were escorted to the demo area, which had ample seating and good views of the chef. It's not air conditioned but there were several fans and a breeze. The chef did an excellent job a preparing and explaining the food. There was also a guide that gave us an overview of the history of the estate. After eating, we had quite a bit of free time (maybe too much) before the rum tasting, which was also well done. Shortly thereafter, our transportation arrived to take us back to the ship. This was an enjoyable excursion,Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 10, 2024

Maybe if I’d spent a little less time rum tasting, I’d have had time to also explore the garden. Visited as part of a cruise excursion. Would love the rum cake recipe. Most delicious! Thank you Doreen. You’re wonderwoman!Visited April 2024Traveled with friendsWritten April 8, 2024

We could not have been made more welcome and looked after better. We had a great time locally and enjoyed Tavistock. Salcombe and Kilnbridge were lovely too.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 13, 2024

We visited today as two independent travellers and were told that entrance was €10 each. We asked if that included a guided tour and were told No it doesn’t so we walked around by ourselves. The house is small and nicely kept in original style but a lot of the artefacts are reproduction pieces. The small information room was worth the visit and easy to understand. The gardens are beautiful and well kept. The rum punch was excellent but again the staff were totally disinterested and we had to ask for service. The barmaid was good when she served us. Such a shame that other members of staff were sitting around a table, chatting and not engaging with visitors especially when we are in a position to recommend this place to other visitors. Staff need a good lesson in customer service and how to engage with visitors.

Dear Guest,
Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review of your visit.
Fairview offers both guided tours and non-guided visits; guided tours must be booked in advance via the Kantours website. Otherwise, as you stated the entrance fee is USD $10 for adults ($5 for children) and this offers visitors the ability to explore the Great House and Botanical Garden at their leisure. We're happy to know the Information Room provided useful information on the history of the property.
Of course, we must apologize for the less than welcoming service and have forwarded your review to Management. It is always our goal to ensure every guest has a pleasant visit, and is provided with the same service received from the barmaid.
We appreciate your feedback.

We visited 29.12.19 on an excursion provided by the cruise ship. There were a group of French people that disrupted and ruined the whole tour and cooking class with incessant, loud talking and laughter which the tour guide did nothing to control. I sensed that the chef shared our frustration. I was left to take responsibility to tell these people to be quiet when really I would have expected the tour guide to manage the situation.

Dear MurrayP,
We sincerely apologize for the disruption caused by the other guests, and we appreciate your feedback so we may ensure situations like this do not happen with future tours.
We hope you were able to learn some tips and tricks nonetheless, and enjoy the food prepared.

I really enjoy touring plantation homes and seeing the architecture and antiques. They also have an exhibit about the history of the plantation and a large, very educational exhibit in the basement about the slave trade. You can walk the grounds and view the small botanical garden. They give rum tastings to organized tour groups. We were traveling by ourselves on a taxi tour. I wish the rum tasting had been open all day to drop ins. There is also a bar and restaurant. It looked like a nice place. I wish our driver had brought us there for lunch. I told our driver several times that I wished to go there, but he kept saying, " I don't think they're open or if they are you need reservations." Finally, I convinced him to stop and see. Yes, they are open for tours, just a $5 fee, and looked like they would have appreciated the lunch business.

We came to Fairfield Great House as part of an excursion from a Regent Cruise ship. The house was built in the 16th century and was first occupied by a French military commander. We spent about 30 minutes here. The house is decorated with elaborate 16th furniture. It was interesting to see. In the back there are gardens showing various herbs and other plants.

Tash and Che were Awesome Hostesses for our tour of Fairview Great House and Botanical Gardens, plus our cooking demonstration and rum tasting event. Both beautiful ladies were so informative and fun. The tour was very relaxing and our hostesses really took their time in sharing all of the history of St. Kitts. I would highly recommend this tour if you love history and local cuisine.

What a gem! We booked a Caribbean cuisine tour through P&O as we're on a cruise. I must say, we were definitely not disappointed! The house and gardens alone are worth a visit, it's beautiful and steeped in history. The cookery demonstration was very good and the chef extremely knowledgeable. The food was delicious. If you're thinking of this, give it a go, you will not regret it!
Also, a special thank you to Tash who gave us the history tour and looked after us for the duration.

We do hope you'll recreate some of the dishes at home with the recipes, and tips and tricks you learned.
Bon appetit!

One of the Tours we selected while cruising on the Viking Sea. The gardens were beautiful, even though there was not a lot in bloom. The Great House is a great example of how the Sugar plantation owners lived. Of course like most of the places we visited it included Rum Punch as a refreshment. In back of the house, they demonstrated how they roars peanuts on the island. They have a pot filled with volcanic sand in which they bury the peanuts and then heat the sand. They gave us sample bags of the peanuts, which were quite tasty.

We booked this excursion through Royal Caribbean. The tour of the house was great and we loved our tour guide - I believe Doreen? She made amazing rum cake and she made the rum tasting and slide show a lot of fun. Will definitely recomment this tour to others.

Did the St Kitts Culinary and rum tasting tour at the Fairview house. Maya (sp?) was a great guide and very interactive. Led an informative tour. The chef cooked a great traditional Caribbean meal and dessert. Doreen, who led the rum tasting for Shipwreck Rums was absolutely the life of the party and so much fun. Very glad this was our choice while in St Kitts.

We thought we were going to a cooking demo, but did not realize it was so much more. Shea prepared everything effortlessly, and was fun to watch as she prepared a vegetable dish, a pork dish, a fish dish, dessert while her assistant (Che??) and tour guide served various rums. It was all fun and informative, and the food was delicious. Lots of history on this Fairview Great House tour arranged by our Silversea cruise.

Do you need to book a tour in advance or can you just show up and tour it on your own?
Written October 23, 2015
You can just show up and pay a fee to go and see the house and gardens. The girl from Kantours told us it was $10 US but when we actually paid the girl at the entrance, it was 10EC.
Written May 23, 2018
I have read the tripadvisor reviews of visits to the house and cookery demonstration. Can the package be booked directly or can you suggest a tour agent?
I will be on the Island first week of January 2016.
Kind Regards
