It was so nice to be able to charter your own trip. Iris and Darcy were our crew and both were great and took great care of us. They kept the boat super clean.
We didn't get fish we could keep, but got some barracuda. We got some time snorkeling in as we asked. I would definitely recommend this group if you want to fish, or don't want to be crowded on the bigger tourist boats.

Spent a full day on the water with Capt Jon and Charlie. Had an amazing day in rough water. Right out of Camana Bay they put me onto fish. i caught several barracuda and three wahoo at 30, 23 and 50 lbs! These were my first wahoo and it couldn’t have been better. Cross that species off my bucket list. From my first contact through the entire trip Slackem Charters was exceptional! I can’t wait to het back on the water with them next year.

Had a great time fishing with Jon and Iris. They got us on the fish soon after we hit open water. We ended up landing 6 barracuda and 1 wahoo. (lost a dandy Tuna and also a wahoo as well) The Hatteras has obviously seen lots of time on the water, but its servicable, clean, and comfortable.

There were four of us. In the confusion of cruising to unfamiliar destinations the cabdriver took us to the wrong marina. Slackem motored over and picked us up and we caught two Barracuda. The four of us had a great time.
The guys were friendly, answered all of our questions, and everyone had a good time.

Seas were terrible. Swells at least 15 feet. Never even got our lines in the water and we were charged full price for this mistake of a fishing trip. People count on the captain to cancel a trip when he knows the weather is not good. We trusted him and we paid dearly (both financially and with sea sickness)..My teenagers were terrified! I will never trust a website again in choosing an activity like deep sea fishing. Fortunately, this will go down as one of the few bad experiences we have ever had in Grand Cayman but we will never again go fishing there as a result

I find it hard to believe for alot of reasons why this review is not by a genuine guest of Salckem Charters
1. I find it hard to believe that someone who had a trip in December of 2012 would wait until 29 July 2013 to first sign up to Trip Advisor and leave a bad review, if you had such a terrible time I am pretty sure that would have been the first priority on you agenda, 7 months is a pretty long time to hold a grudge.
2. It is our policy not to go out in seas of 6-8 feet and we abide by this faithfully, we never want our guests to have a bad experience!
3. We have a disclaimer on all of our confirmation emails that states to communicate any concern you have immediately to the captain to avoid an un-enjoyable trip, especially rough sea conditions as everyone's tolerance is different.
4. We have never had an experience that we were not able to put lines in the water due to rough weather, this is completely a false statement.
5. We do however have past employees/business partners that know how important Trip Advisor is to our business and the statement on "how you will never use a website to book another Deep Sea fishing charter" is almost proof of that.

Went on a half day deep sea fishing charter with Jacob and Jonathan on IFish that was docked at Camana Bay. The boys had the boat ready at the dock when we arrived at 8am. They are both extremely efficient, knowledgeable and obviously enjoy their "job". The boat was clean and equipped with all the necessities for fishing all types of fish. My son caught a barracuda, his friend a small tuna (which they then used for live bait). We trolled looking for more fish but there was a lull in the action. At about the time we should have been done by the designated hours of our trip, Jacob asked if we had any other plans for the afternoon and if we wanted to give it just another 1/2 hour or so to see if we could come into some more fish. We agreed and shortly thereafter they were able to spot some feeding activity on the water. All 6 of us on board were able to reel in a fish during this extra time these guys put in. We caught yellow tail tuna that they quickly put into a live well for us. When we arrived back to the dock, Jacob fileted all of our fish and Jonathan went to a restaurant (Mizu, which has an excellant chef) on Camana Bay and made our reservations for a fine dinner that evening with the days catch. Slackem charters was exceptional from the first email to the cleaning of the boat as we left. We all appreciated the extra time and effort Jacob and Jonathan put in to make our day a success! Use them, they are awesome!

Captain Jon didn't promise us a big fish, but he did promise we'd have a good time, which we did! My wife, daughter and I took our first charter out of Grand Cayman with Captain Jon and Lee, his excellent Fish Manager! (I'd call him a deckhand, but he did so much more and so well:) !
We went out north from Grand Cayman and started trolling within 30 minutes of departure. My daughter and I love to fish, but most of our experience is with party boats or charters that are drift fishing or moving from spot to spot. Our hopes were for a few good eating fish and a good time viewing the beautiful waters there. We got much more that we bargained for!
Our first two fish were decent size Mahi Mahi and my daughter and I took turns in the seat. The third fish was a 25lb Mahi Mahi and it gave her a terrific fight. Captain Jon talked about the marlins, but honestly we weren't expecting to hook any. After enjoying our first sperm whale lazing about while we trolled by, Lee hooked a nice Blue Marlin that made a terrific looking jump. My daughter took the seat, but the fish shook the hook within a few minutes. Still pretty exciting to see.
A while later, we heard the familiar "Fish On", and Captain Jon seemed particularly excited. I took the seat and when Lee finished moving the rod to me, I was shocked at the pull exerted by this fish! He started pulling line and Lee started pulling up the other gear with my daughter's help. The line kept going and going and I was terrified that he would hit the end of the spool and we'd lose it all. Captain Jon told me later there were 1350 yards of line on this spool (medium sized lure for smaller fish). When the fish finally stopped pulling, we had about 20 yards of line left and my work started!
Captain Jon and Lee walked me through the hour long event and I was shocked by how much work there was to do. (and redo and redo :) ) What a fabulous experience! It was something that I never expected to do in my lifetime, and here I was experiencing a life changer!
When we finally got the Marlin up to the boat and Lee was able to grab him by the bill and get the hook out, Captain Jon gave us an estimate of 250lbs. I have no idea how but big that is in the scheme of things, but I'll say that it seemed huge to me... The whole time we went through this, Captain Jon was obviously having the time of his life! It was amazing to watch someone who obviously had been fishing for all of his life get some pleasure our of an event that probably happens pretty frequently (to him, anyway).
Their expertise in guiding me and in managing the boat, the reel, the seat and the line was fantastic. It was like watching a musical conductor with his orchestra. At times going forward, backward, changing boat directions, giving me directions... Amazing! Lee was keeping the drag adjusted, moving my seat, keeping his gloved hand between the line and the transom to avoid fraying. All of this in an effort to keep the fish on to make sure that we'd get some great pictures and I'd have the experience of a lifetime. I learned, during this lesson, what Captain Jon meant about the mixed blessing of seeing the rubber band that was the marker for the trolling hookup. I bet that I reeled that rubber band onto the reel 10 or 12 times and the Marlin proceeded to pull it back out! :)
My daughter (brave soul that she is) spent the last 30 minutes of the fight hanging on to the transom with one hand while kneeling on the swim platform in order to get some great under water shots with the GoPro! I haven't seen all the footage yet, but I'm excited to enjoy it later.
When it was over and we were letting the marlin ride along side for a little bit to make sure he was OK, I was able to touch his top fin and just reflect on the thrill of the moment. Watching this beautiful fish swim away when released just put the icing on the cake. I don't know when we'll be back to Grand Cayman, but we plan on taking another charter with Slackem, though I don't know how they'd beat the excitement of our first trip!
I'd like to thank Stephanie, Jon's gracious wife and the business manager, for her efforts helping us to coordinate this fun trip.
Captain Jon, we'll be back! Thanks so much!

I went back to view the website to see if I had over estimated what we thought we would (or should) be getting for our $700 half day reef fishing trip, and confirmed that we got nothing near what was promised. We caught fish, but that was not the problem. The problem was a dirty boat, a lousy, uncommunicative and thoroughly inexperienced captain and inadequate equipment. A fishing charter cannot guarantee good weather, nor that you will catch fish. They can ensure that they have a clean boat, an experienced crew and captain for the fishing trip they offer to take you on, and adequate equipment for that purpose. Everything that went wrong on our trip was completely avoidable.
From our initial communication we made it clear that we wanted to go reef fishing and that there were three of us. We were not interested in snorkeling or deep sea fishing, and we wanted to be certain that each of us could fish at the same time. The woman confirming our reservation assured us all was set up and even helped to change the day of our trip when the winds were very high. However, the quality control seems to end with her.
Captain Edwardo and his crew, Nick, arrived about 10 minutes late. Boat was wet and filthy and clearly had not been cleaned before our pick up. There was trash on the floor and all of the surfaces were wet and very dirty. There was nowhere to sit so we stood while Nick cleaned up the boat while we headed out to the reef. Edwardo then asked what we wanted to do and we told him we signed up to go reef fishing. He suggested that we troll for a while. We said we wanted to reef fish and that we all wanted to be able to fish at the same time. He then had nick set up two lines for trolling while we VERY VERY Slowly made our way out to the reef. When we got there -- just over an hour into our four hour trip, with neither Captain nor crew having spoken almost a word since we left he dock, Edwardo said he had not used a spin casting rod in years. Nick was below deck fixing up a line, which clearly was a challenge. It was almost 90 minutes from pick up when we finally got two lines into the water. Neither was properly set up for reef fishing. After about 15 minutes of sharing lines I asked if they were setting up a third line and Edwardo said the boat was not big enough for three people to fish at the same time. I said that was crazy (we were on IFish, which is 34 feet), we'd fished three people on much smaller boats and we had been told it would be no problem on this one. Then Edwardo said they did not have three fishing rods! That makes me ticked off since we had set this trip up a full week in advance and three people wanting to reef fish was certainly not a surprise for them. And, for $700, I think you should be able to find three rods! Edwardo honestly could not have cared less, but I think Nick was starting to sense that we were not very happy, and he then became more chatty. The reason this review gives them two star, rather than zero, is because Nick really tried at this point and for the rest of the rip to be very friendly. He pointed out several landmarks, explained some of the different areas of the island and then offered to go diving for lobsters which we would be able to take home and eat. He did get 4 of them even finding a "slipper lobster" which was interesting. Nick spent a lot fo time int he water digging up those lobsters for us!
Meanwhile, Edwardo took out one of the trolling lines and put a large bait fish on it and started fishing himself -- hey, I thought you told me the boat was not big enough to fish three rods at once???? We did catch about 6 fish -- four snapper, a yellow jack and a squirrel fish. Sharing two rods was not ideal, but the biggest problem is that we frequently got one of the lines snagged on the reef and would lose the hook. When they had to re rig the line, it would take Edwardo like twenty minutes to do this (and he did not even do it right -- the weight was so big is was almost covering the hook). At one point, Nick was diving for Lobsters and Edwardo was below decks trying to figure out how to rig the rod. he was gone literally for 20- 25 minutes. we baited our own lines and unhooked a fish that we caught. I cannot believe we pad these jokers $700 for a half day for this.
We have been on reef fishing trips twice before in Cayman and also Turks & Caicos, Aruba and many times in the Florida keys. We are certainly not expert fishermen and women and we did not always catch fish, and the weather did not always cooperate, but NEVER have we had such an unprofessional experience as this. Edwardo certainly knows how o drive a boat but he should stick to snorkeling trips where fishing and how to do it are not the focus. Nick was great, and turned out the be very friendly, but we didn't pay this kind of money to watch him dive for lobsters. I appreciate the fact that he cared about our experience though, which is more than I can say for Captain Edwardo.
I would absolutely NOT recommend this outfit for a fishing trip. Their website talks about the "family business" and we got absolutely none of that feeling from this experience. If you are going to charge this kind of money and hold yourselves out as qualified to this then you need a knowledgeable captain and crew, a clean boat and proper and sufficient equipment. This was basically, a total rip-off.

I have really thought long and hard about responding to this review. I normally take negative reviews and use them as tools as a way of improving our business. However in this case I cannot because deep down in my heart I know that your review is completely untrue. I had a look at the reviews that you have done in the past and cannot believe that someone has taken the time to leave so many reviews and the majority of them being so negative. I don't think that no matter what we did that day we would have been able to please you.
I could sit here and pick apart your review in all its contradictions, faults and false statements but I am not going to put the energy into doing that. Our guests will see that we have over 304 positive reviews, even reviews with Captain Edwardo and how great he is, two reviews prior to yours is a review of him catching a blue marlin. I am pretty sure if he can catch a blue marlin he can catch some reef fish, which he did do. Just a couple points that I will touch on just for clarification. The boat was wet do to the weather as you mentioned the weather was not great that day, when they ran over to get you the boat got wet with the waves, so while you were on board to keep you dry and happy he went slower than normal to prevent you from getting soaked and cold. As for the part about not getting what you were promised, not really sure what you meant here because I never even spoke to you or your husband, everything was done via email where we had no communication in regards to anything to do with gear rods ect.. Captain Edwardo was correct in saying that the boat could not fish three rods, his mistake was he didn't clarify why, the current was strong that day, hence the big sinkers ;-) if he put more than two rods out they would have tangled. The boat may be 31' not 34' as you mentioned but only 3 feet of it is useable cockpit space and with currents the lines all end up in one direction no matter if you even stood on the bow to fish. Where I think you were grasping at straws with this review it was confirmed when you complained about the hooks getting caught in the rocks, you were reef fishing there are tones of rocks and coral, do you really think that was happening because the crew was inexperienced? and finally your charter was four hours, if you add up all your time frames that you mentioned it sounds like you were out there for the entire day.
I can't help but wonder if there isn't some other underlying reasoning behind your review, you keep beating down our Captain like you had some personal issue with him. You mentioned that you can't recommend our outfit however you did say that we did catch you fish and that the mate went above and beyond to try and make your experience great.
That is exactly what we always do, we go above and beyond day after day to give every guest the best experience possible, thank you for clarifying that, take care.

My group visited the island in early January 2015. I worked all the details regarding boat rental with Stephanie via phone and email. She was top notch regarding response time and organization. Use "Keepin It Reel" for a private charter to Stingray City and Starfish beach. 1st Class. The boat is big, comfy and Capt John is very professional. Boarded the same boat for a fishing charter and the results were as I expected. We were there to fish, not to cruise around pretending to fish. Managed to land, wahoo, mahi mahi, barracuda and tuna.
Will not consider anyone else when I return.

While in Grand Cayman for a wedding I was able to break away and get some fishing in. I've traveled to plenty of destinations and every trip I try to go fishing. I've had good, bad, and mediocre experiences in the past. Slackem was the first of all of them that made the process easy, enjoyable, and honestly how it should be in a perfect world.
Captain Jon Archer not only brings a lifetime on the water to the Slackem experience, but the true feel of an island only a local can. When the bite was slow, he was more than generous sharing with me the history of the island, its waters, and fish. A self made man of the sea, it was abundantly obvious I made the right choice of boats.
Many of my past vacation charters ended up being a boat ride with less than knowledgable captains driving less than acceptable vessels. From the safety equipment to the electronics, beautiful Penn Senator top of the line reels, to a spotless cabin and head....Slackem is to me the only choice when traveling to Grand Cayman.
From my first inquiry right up until the morning of my trip Jon's wife Stephanie couldn't have been more helpful with quick responses over email or phone to questions on the trip and logistics. Half and full day trips can be customized from a family day of fishing, snorkeling, and cruising all the way to hardcore offshore angling for the biggest of big game fishing. The unique structure of the island has you to the fishing grounds in under 15 minutes and even offshore fishing is still within sight of land.

Was an all day charter too long?
I was wondering if we should do 1/2 day or full day?
Written January 24, 2020
It is so tough to answer that question unfortunately. It really depends on where the fish are. Some days half day are enough time but there are days that the fish are farther out and it’s not. For Marlin we always recommend a full day.

You should call the fishing charter captain and ask him if he can get your family in with another group

Do you offer mixed groups? My girlfriend and I would like to fish for a half day but can’t afford to charter an entire boat. We’d love to go in on a trip with other folks. If not, could you suggest somewhere that we could?
Will be there 12/29-1/3

Oops! sorry , have been away myself. I don't think Slackem does mixed group but i imagine you already know this.

My husband and I will be there Jan 21-28 and wondering if there are any restaurants we can take our catch to, to have them cook up a dinner?
Written January 22, 2018
Yes for sure we work with the The. water Front Diner in Camana Bay. You get to meet the chef and speak with home and tell home how you would like it prepared
We have had really good reviews from our guests
