After receiving an inadequate and curt response from the owner, Kevin, about my concerns, I would really like to give this tour zero stars as a rating but that is not an option. I urge you to read this in its entirety, because this excursion wasn't even close to what was advertised when we booked through trip advisor. We paid $250 for two of us and we did not come close to receiving that value.
The tour description states that there are a maximum of 12 participants. A group of 9 on our tour brought 5 extra people--in addition to us and another couple from our ship. Nikki made a point to walk us to the van and then tell us she needed to go back and deal with the large group--whom she said she told ahead of time that they could not accommodate the extra participants. She NEVER asked our input on having 18 people on this tour. In Kevin's response (the owner), he wrote "however the tour guide was pressured into accommodating some additional family members from a large group which made a booking. I was aware of the situation and did initially advise that they should have booked a private tour and we could not facilitate. We apologize for this and normally do not accommodate larger groups unless on a private tour. I did also advise that the only way the additional guests could be accommodated is if the other guests agreed and were not made uncomfortable. I left it to the tour guide to speak with the guests and make a decision."
The excursion transportation is described as a "tour bus." This was not a tour bus, but instead two fullsized transport vans. I was "stuck" in the middle of the back seat and there was very limited visibility out the window--so this was not a cultural island tour. The driver (Nikki) had the radio playing music, and two young girls in the front seat were playing on their electronic devices/cell phones (with sound). The young girl next to me was a total distraction as she also continuously played on her cell phone--and this went on for the entire trip. There was no way we could even communicate with the driver, Nikki, due to the sound level in the vehicle. And Kevin's response to this concern was that he "cannot force participants to turn off their phones". In addition he wrote, "I suggest if you do not want to interact with outside parties the private tour would be your best choice." Really? I have gone to many events where we were told to silence our cell phones. I paid $250 for a cultural informational tour and you cannot justify asking participants to turn the sound off on their electronic devices?? And Kevin tells me to book a private tour so I can actually get what was advertised, when earlier he said that he advised the large group to book a private tour to accommodate their large size.
The tour description advertises that is a cultural experience that visits historical sites and local art. There were NO historical sites and NO local art. The tour was supposed to include fees for a guided tour of the National Gallery. According to Kevin, the tour guide is supposed to ask guests if they want to do this----we were never asked and this is something we wanted to do. We got a late start due to the problems with the number of people. We were delayed at the rum tasting since the "added" people in our group decided to go back in for additional samples. Hence, as we were leaving the rum tasting, Nikki told us we were going to have to eat the food from the next stop (the meat pastry patties) in the vehicle due to time constraints. We started to eat outside at the tables because we didn't want to eat while in the van---the two of us ended up throwing out half of our patties.
The tour description also advertises three beer tastings. My husband and I along with the other couple asked about this but Nikki told us we were not going to do this today--but she could direct us to where we can purchase beer. We were supposed to be provided with "specially prepared off the menu items." Nothing was off the menu---they were all basic items on the restaurant's daily menu. And local chefs and restaurant owners did not come out to meet us to discuss the cuisine--another false advertisement. Kevin's response was that there is a disclaimer that they can change the tour at any time---however they did not offer alternatives--they just totally eliminated the beer tasting and private guided gallery tour. Ironically, he wrote "We suggest you consider only private tours in future so that only your preferences can be accommodated." I wasn't asking for my preferences to be accommodated--I was asking for the tour as advertised.
And finally, there was no cultural information provided. Based on the tour description, we expected to learn about the island's history, demographics, government, economy, infrastructure etc---none of this was ever presented. The roti was on the menu for $9.50; the meat pattie was $2.50; the rum distillery website advertises $15 a person--but even cheaper for groups of 5 or more; the gelato was $4 and the rum cake tasting was a public offering in a store. The lionfish sandwich was one small slider--on the menu, lionfish cakes with a salad are $12--so the slider was probably worth about $5. So, I paid $125 per person for about $35-$40 worth of food---no guided national gallery tour and no beer tasting; no <12 person tour group in a TOUR BUS; no meeting with local chefs and owners; no cultural education was provided.
