We were given this half day kayaking trip as a gift and were extremely thrilled to have had such an amazingly great time. Alex, owner and guide, was a great Nature Ambassador. He took us briefly through a portion of ocean and then into a gorgeous and thrilling nature adventure. Alex was well informed on the history of the island and lagoon as well as the scientific details of what we were experiencing as he shuttled us through twists and turns in the lagoon. A true highlight of our three weeks in Tortola.

We decided to hike Mount Alma in the morning. It was very hot and the hike was not an easy one, but we were able to do it. The views are incredible (360 views)! Alex was amazing! He explained everything and he was very friendly. Thanks for the experience and for showing your love to this beautiful place!

Amazing afternoon paddling through the mangroves. Alex was incredibly knowledgable and his passion for the environment in which he operates was contagious. Fantastic to see how much life the mangroves teem with including hundreds of (perfectly harmless) jellyfish. Cannot recommend this trip enough. A great adventure all round!!

My family of four (including two girls, ages 14 and 8) booked the Mangrove Paddle directly with GroundSea. We met Alex at the shop and we’re on our way from the port shortly after. Our driver, Derrick, shared information about the island’s history and has a great sense of humor. The drive to the lagoon is beautiful.

Because we had an odd number of people in our party, Derrick was invited to join us. It was an amazing experience. The mandrakes themselves are interesting; we learned about their ecological importance and the ongoing efforts to protect the lagoon from development. While out on the water, we saw the most amazing jellyfish and were able to hold them without being stung. We happened to see a few baby sharks, which was exciting. There were a variety of other small fish around the lagoon.

The experience was well worth the price. If we could change anything at all, we would be sure to take sunscreen and bottled water out on the kayaks with us. We were out longer than we expected!

I highly recommend booking an experience with GroundSea. As someone who has cruised with Disney multiple times, I found our adventure to be far better than any port excursions we’ve booked through Disney Cruise Line. If we return to Tortola again, we’ll definitely book kayaking or paddle boarding with GroundSea again.

What an amazing and relaxing experience. My wife and I tried the paddle board for the first time and had an awesome time. Alex is a very knowledgeable person about the wildlife and the islands. I just wish we did the tour earlier in our trip because he had the best recommendations on food, trips, locations, hikes, and everything in between.

We went kayaking and paddle boarding with Alex on the reef and into the crystal clear mangrove lagoon behind Beef Island--this is a natural nursery for marine life of all kinds, including baby lemon sharks. Alex is very knowledgeable about the plants and marine life--this area should be made a National Park for all visitors to the BVI to enjoy. Fabulous experience!

I was spellbound by the beauty and the stories Alex told us about the plants and trees and the sea creatures. He has such an amazing knowledge and it was made magical being told by someone who is passionate about what he does and about the island of Tortola in the BVI. He shared with us his love of nature and the magical beauty of the mangrove lagoon and all that come with it from discovering the whole floor of the shallow lagoon was alive with pulsing jelly fish to spotting baby sharks. So far this has been the most favourite part of my trip!

Here is a guided tour you must do when in the BVI. Had a great time in the Mangrove lagoon on Beef Island. Alex was a great host showing a great scenery. We chose the stand up paddling but kayaks are also available. We met Alex at his brothers place, Aragorn Studio in Trellis bay for a 10 minute drive to the other side of the bay. Very exclusive, only the three of us plus Alex and the nature.
Not many birds cause of the recent hurricane Irma but lots of fish. It was great to see the mangroves recovering from Irma.
This is a tour for everyone. Must see and do when in Tortola.

This must be the inspiration behind BVI's "Nature's Little Secrets" slogan — SUPing, kayaking, and snorkeling with Alex and the amazing creatures thriving in these mangroves! As an avid diver, there's simply no better feeling than the first time you encounter a new marine organism and have the opportunity to spend time with them up close. I didn't think that would be possible in Tortola, after having just returned from marine biodiversity hotspots in the Indo-Pacific (Raja Ampat & Lembeh Straits)... but boy was I wrong! I don't want to spoil the experience by describing every little detail. All I can say is, if you love going off the beaten path and being one with nature, make time to visit these mangroves with GroundSea Adventures!

P.S. If you only have time for one activity in Tortola, make this it.

This impulse booking turned out to be our BVI highlight. The kayaks helped us access some of the last pristine mangroves in the BVIs, now sprouting back to glorious life after the hurricane. It’s a place full of beauty and teeming with life - upside-down jellyfish by the dozen (none stung us), three mangrove species, chattering terns, young fish and baby shark. We’d left our BVI guidebook in the UK - that didn’t matter once we met Alex. His knowledge of the history, geology and ecology of these islands is riveting. Our kids absorbed the place, the knowledge and the importance of conserving mangroves. They were able to replant some propagules.

Can mangrove replanting be a planning requirement for every developer looking to commercialise their own slice of paradise here?
