Just returned from a fantastic week discovering the BVIs in the very capable hands of Captain Andy and Chef Linzi on Seas the Day. From the moment we stepped on board to the moment we sadly trooped off (all several pounds heavier!) nothing was too much trouble, and try as we might, no one except the two of them was allowed to lift a finger. They were highly professional in everything they did, while at the same time being a whole lot of fun. With the eight of us being “virgins in the Virgins” we were happy to let Andy recommend the route, which was perfect for our group; but he would have been equally happy to follow an itinerary of our choosing.
We still aren’t quite sure how Linzi worked her magic in the galley, but good things kept appearing for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and the few dietary restrictions we had in our group were met with imaginative alternatives. Her siren call of “nibbles on the flydeck” as the sun was starting to go down was all it took to get everyone out of the water and ready for dinner. If you are really nice to her she might share her secret supply of Marmite.
The yacht certainly exceeded this newbie’s expectations in terms of space, cleanliness and facilities. Andy and Linzi obviously took great pride in the vessel and Andy was always willing to explain the vessel’s inner workings.
In short…a fantastic trip and we have no hesitation in recommending Captain Andy, Chef Linzi and Seas the Day to any group looking for a vacation to remember.

“How did you pick The Moorings out of all the charter companies in the BVI” is the question I get asked all the time but an easy one – the people! No matter how many times I called HQ, someone always answered and provided the best customer service in return. From the first time I spoke to a vacation specialist (Brad), to visiting the booth and boat at the Annapolis Boat Show, to experiencing two crewed charters, The Moorings by far has the best staff and crew around! They are always so knowledgeable, organized and most of all, focused around customer service which puts them above the rest!
After our original crewed charter was canceled in January 2018 (due to two cat 5 hurricanes), our first crewed charter took place in January 2019, and then again in January 2020, both on Old Marblehead (5000) with Ty and Jess. There are not enough words to express how Ty and Jess made our first charter experience in the BVI a memorable one – so much so - we rebooked again the following year! On both charters, they exceeded my expectations in every way and always went above and beyond for us. They are kind, caring, fun to be around, engaging, patient and their love for sailing and the BVI is infectious. From Ty educating us every morning on the history of the BVI to calling another boat to find a kids mask for my small face, to getting me hooked on every flavor of hot sauce – I always felt safe knowing he was in charge. On the flip side, from the moment we arrived, Jess created the best cocktails and gourmet meals, which we couldn’t believe was for us every day. Most of all, we appreciated all the meals being so healthy! They both had the best recommendations throughout our trip for all the hot spots, especially our excursion to Cow Wreck Beach! The list goes on and on and I am forever grateful that we ended up on their boat - looking forward to returning to the BVI with The Moorings again soon!

Captain Andy, Chef Linzi, and the Moorings 5000 were awesome and everyone in our group of 6 had a great time sailing around the beautiful BVI islands. The Moorings website and support team were quite helpful with pre-trip planning and we had a Zoom meeting with Andy about 2 weeks prior to our trip to iron out any final details and preferences. The Moorings 5000 was plenty spacious for our group of 6 adults and we could have easily accommodated another couple. Above deck, there we multiple areas forward and aft perfect for lounging, catching some sun, or enjoying the beautiful sunsets. Boat was in great shape, clean and everyone was quite impressed with the capabilities and performance of the Moorings 5000. Like other reviewers have indicated, Andy and Linzie were super-organized and really made the week a 5-star experience. Andy knows the boat inside and out and clearly knew the area and all of the best locations and timing for the many customized activities during the week. Every day, Andy would talk though the upcoming activities ahead and recap past days with the group to ensure all expectations were met or often exceeded. Meanwhile, Linzi was busy preparing for the next fantastic meal, “nibbles”, drinks for the group or cleaning up around the boat. The Andy/Linzi team was organized so that our group was able to take full advantage of every minute BVI had to offer….from some fantastic snorkeling sites and land tours to taking in the sailing legs of the trip and sunsets. They were great at reading our minds and often exceeding our expectations every day. We highly recommend the BVI island experience with the Andy & Linzi / Moorings team who were awesome, and our group is already looking forward to a return trip and future BVI sailing adventures.

I'll admit I had romanticized the trip. We booked 6 nights and I had hoped to sail and experience some of the itinerary outlined on the Moorings website. If you want to experience the itinerary do NOT rent a sailing catamaran. Even with 20 MPH winds you can't get there in time to fully enjoy and explore. All your time will be spent sailing from one point to another. Even motoring, we would get to said location by 3:30. sunset in january is 5:30 and boat needs to be moored for the night one hour before sunset. At 3:30 not much daylight is left and air temp is starting to cool. I did a ton of research for this trip. Really wish I had come across this info. I reached out to the Moorings 2 days prior to departure wanting to meet/communicate with captain. I was told I would not meet prior to getting to the dock. He had also reached out to the Moorings wanting to communicate with us. What a missed opportunity! We ended up sailing a total of 4 hours in a week. Should have booked a power cat.
In addition to above I do not recommend renting the 48' sailing cat at all. Moorings only has one. So DO NOT rent. I'll see if I can upload pics. But the dining table is held up with a wrench. Most of the cabinet hinges are stripped. The kitchen sink trickles - made it super super hard to wash dishes!!!! Master shower did not drain (we had to use a cup and scoop and drain water in the sink)and two of the toilets had a warning light stating do not use. We were able to fix after 3 hours of research looking for and reading manuals about the yacht.
We asked the captain about the 4 hour fix it window Moorings boasts it has and he started laughing and said they wouldn't come to fix these things. To sum it up, this boat is way past its prime. At the price point we rented, this is inexcusable.
The boat was not ready for us when we were ready to sail. We had to wait to fill up with gas and water as we left the marina. Because we motored everywhere, we had about $600 in gas expenditures and several hundred more in water costs despite conserving.
Last bit of info to share. The Bahamas health visa which covers you should you get COVID does not cover any expenses if your rapid comes back positive ... then your PCR comes back negative.

Whatever happened to customer service? I have just returned from a charter and an awful service experience we had. This is our 7 th time to charter a boat from the Moorings/Sunsail. We kept coming back because even though they were not the lowest cost, the service we had received in the past was worth the extra cost. That is definitely not the case after this last trip. We lost our generator engine one evening while anchored in Leverick Bay. The following morning I had contacted customer service by 8:49 am about the problem. I received a call from the service personnel that they would be at the floating gas dock by 12:00 pm. At 1:00 pm I phoned the service technician to ask where he was and he said he was on the gas dock at TRELLIS BAY! When he found out he was at the wrong location he said he would call me back. Did not hear from him. At 3:00 pm I called customer service again to make sure the personnel was still on the way. I was forwarded to the service manager and he did not answer and I could not leave a voice mail because the "mailbox was full." Now our trip has been delayed a day waiting on the technician, and this was no way near the "4HOUR Service Guarantee" from the Moorings. Customer Service was no help in locating the technician and providing me with a time estimate. 8:00 am the following morning the tech arrived and replaced the impeller, checked out the other strainers in the boat, so we left for Anegada with a working generator. Well, the generator quit before we arrived in Anegada. Obviously, the technician did not repair it all the way. When I called customer service from Anegada, I was informed that they did not make service calls to Anegada and that was in the packet information I received at registration. When I informed them that I did not receive the packet, I was asked if I did not receive it, how did I get the CS number. Kind of an attitude from the CS person. At check in, the receptionist said that she did not have my packet and the person giving the briefing in the morning would bring it. Yes you guessed it, when he showed up he did not have the packet either! When I asked were the service numbers in the packet, he said yes, but the customer service number is all you need. NowI tried, but the service manager would not send a technician, to Anegada. The disturbing thing is that no one in customer service was owning my problem trying to get it resolved, which now was when I returned from Anegada. Finally, Janel, started to take control of the situation and we planned a meeting in Great Harbor the next day at 12:00 PM. Finally, at 1:30 PM, Janel showed with a tech. Grass was pulled from the intake for the generator engine and it ran as advertised.
After 7 times chartering from the Moorings, first trip was in 1997, I will investigate other charter companies operating in the BVI for my next trip.

This was our first trip with the Moorings and was absolutely outstanding! Capt. Andy and his First Mate/Chef Linzie went overboard( figure of speech!) to make our trip great. Andy was very patient with all my landlubber questions about sailing, navigation, etc. My wife was not convinced she would be able to live aboard a boat for a week and had some trepidation about signing on. Seasickness was her worst fear. But even in strong winds with "lumpy seas" (Andy's term for choppy) Andy sailed the boat like it was a Cadillac, smooth, straight, and true. Linzie his wife, not only helped with the sailing, she created amazing gourmet meals from 2 small refrigerators! Shrimp with cajun sauce, stuffed filets, pasta dishes, even Bar B Que! The best treat was the daily 5 o'clock cocktail hour hors d' oeurves. Nothing better than Linzie's cooking, good company (our travel companions made the trip so much fun) watching the sun go down over the horizon!
Together Andy and Linzie entertained us all day long. Great stories about their lives in England, stories about their sailing trips around the world. We felt very safe and secure with them.My wife said the gentle rocking of the catamaran made her sleep like a baby every night. If you decide on a Moorings crewed charter, ask, no DEMAND Andy and Linzie!

Outstanding in every way. Richard and Shannon felt like family by day one and went out of their way to make our holiday more than we could have imagined! With a group of 7 including several “wanna be” captains, Richard taught us a lot about sailing and showed his amazing patience numerous times. Shannon’s not only an amazing chef but her sailing experience and tips were very valuable.
Shannon’s meals were outstanding-when you can wow seven adults for seven days in a row- you are one talented chef.
They took part with us in many activities, from snorkelling tours, videoing, story telling, just great hosts!
I have been in the travel industry for many years and have seen and visited many destinations. As a senior travel consultant I can guarantee you that this is a trip of a lifetime and Richard and Shannon made the difference!

By far the best vacation ever. Capt. Andy and Chef Linzi made the trip memorable and custom for our family. Right up there with Ritz Carlton Maui and then some. Only problem was deciding how much fun we wanted to have each day. Our experience was safe, fun and full of V.I.P. treatment once we got on our catamaran. Capt. Andy and Chef Linzi made sure we were always safe and well fed with amazing meals that rival any 5 star experience we have had previously. I would highly recommend it to anyone thinking about chartering a private yacht. Our catamaran name is “Out of the Box” and so was our vacation.

This was the most amazing trip ever for a number of reasons. I had been to the Virgin Islands before but this time I went with a group of eight friends on the boat. Jess and Ty were our captains on Old Marblehead and provided a signature and unforgettable experience throughout. It would have been enough to just sail around for five days but of course there was so much more. We went to a different cool place daily and nightly , often times coming in to a little bay area where other yachts and catamarans were docked. The little dinghy boat could easily take us either to shore or to the floating bar over in the distance. Each bedroom has its own bathroom which was super convenient and of course you had the option of taking some blankets or a few beach towels up to the top deck and laying there into the night as the sky is so clear you can see the galaxies. One night we went to Leverick Bay Marina where they had this really cool bar and we danced the night away. I think we danced every day actually. Whether it was on the floating bar or at the Soggy Dollar bar during the afternoon or at Foxy‘s bar at night on Jost Van Dyke, The mood and vibe was too good not to dance. There was good Wi-Fi on the boat so you could hook that up for music or a late night dance party. Jess’s cooking, meals, and aesthetic presentation was so good that I have not looked at food the same since. And we ate all of the meals together. I was thinking and realized It was the first time in my life I ate with a family of 10 people for 3 meals/day for five days straight at the same table. So that was really cool. One night we went to this neat dockside restaurant for spiny lobster after renting a little dune buggy and zipping around all day past Big Horn cattle and other wildlife on the way to Beaches and Ocean front bars on Anegada. Another day we went to a beautiful secluded beach front village for afternoon drinks and floating on our big inflatable toys. Another day we docked and took a short hike to a natural wonder called whispering pools where the waves come crashing in high on the rocks yet still so pretty you could create a save the date card.
So instead of putting this on your bucket list all I have left to say is three words: JUST DO IT!

We just returned from a wonderful crewed charter in the BVIs on the "Abby Normal To" hosted by Richard and Shannon Hallett. Over the years my wife and I have done 7 bare boat charters in the Caribbean, starting with the BVIs in 1972. My goal for this trip was to introduce my family to the pleasures of sailing in beautiful places. We were a very diverse party, ranging from my 10 year old grandson to an 80 year old great grandfather. Although I might have qualified as a bare boat skipper, I chose the crewed option to reduce the stress on the entire party. Boy was I right!!
Richard was a competent sailor who was very flexible about our itinerary and was willing to teach and share duties at the helm. At one point when we were anchored at Anegada we rented a small Hobie cat and Richard volunteered to give each of the two boys individual sailing lessons. Richard also helped us find a local fishing guide for a half day excursion to Horseshoe reef. The boys had a great time catching bar jacks, grouper, and barracuda. Just as we were leaving, my son hooked a very large fish. After a 15 minute fight on very light tackle he finally managed to land a 15 lb Mutton snapper
Shannon was an exceptional chef. Every meal was an event!!. beautiful presentation and fine dining flavor. In addition she was willing to provide matching quality alternatives for my youngest grandson who did not eat meat. Because she knew the local vendors she was able to obtain the freshest ingredients for each meal.
I can't finish this review without mentioning the boat. A 50 ft, 5 cabin catamaran. What a treat for an old sailor! New additions since my last charter 15 years ago included a desalinization system which allowed for freshwater flushing in the heads, state of the art navigation electronics, power winches which allow single handed sailing from the helm, an elevator for launching the dingy, and great performance under sail. We averaged 10.5 knots on a reach from Virgin Gorda
to Anegada with a 17 knot wind. In addition I would like to note that the boat was designed to be friendly to us seniors who may have a bit of a problem with balance. There was no place that I could go on the boat where there was not a secure hand hold.

We are looking at booking a 1 week charter on Moorings in the BVI with a Skipper and a Cook. Total price is over $35,000 and they are suggesting gratuities of 15 to 20%. Are people really tipping a two person crew $7,000 for a week?
Kristin B
Atlanta, GA8 contributions
We did tip 20% because it was incredibly worth it. They do everything. And I literally mean EVERYTHING. The service is fantastic and worth every single penny. I would never do this sort of vacation, no matter what my sailing experience level is, without it being crewed. They work with you on food preferences, alcohol choices, plan, purchase and prep all meals, clean up too. They captain the boat, help you decide where to do and the best places to see, and provide incredibly valuable expertise that is worth it's weight in gold. Our Guides were Rosie Kirk and Adam Hughes in the BVI. They are one million percent worth it. Enjoy! it is truly a bucket list experience!!!

Has anyone done a Moorings Charter out of St Thomas yet? We are supposed to leave on Friday on the 5800 Seaduction and they can’t find a chef and are not returning any phone calls whatsoever. We only found out there was no chef because we got in touch with the captain directly who spilled the beans and said they were understaffed and the hostess was going to cook for us.

Taxis are everywhere.
Can anyone recommend the best way to get to Tortola from Los Angeles/Orange County Calif? Best to come day before and spend night in Tortola or San Juan? If you do come day before, how early can you check into hotel or get on boat the following morning? Most flights arrive early am.

I strongly recommend flying into St Thomas at least 3 days before your charter begins. The reason is because of travel/airplane delays. If all goes as planned you have three days to explore beautiful St Thomas and a quick ferry ride to St John ( some of the most beautiful beaches). After your stay in St Thomas you ferry over to Tortola to begin your yacht charter. Perfect vacation. Coming from the West coast I strongly suggest making time to visit St Thomas and St John. You won't regret it.

Two simple questions: Are the electric plugs on board US or British (we are on a 5800 Legacy catamaran)? Are towels provided or do we bring them with us?

They were US plugs (110 volt just like at home in California). Towels were included, 2 sets for the week as well as beach towels for the beach. By the way, had a great time and I highly recommend this cruise to anyone.

I’m shocked by the number of ‘catastrophic’ experiences that customers have had. Poorly maintained boats, unkept promises, unprofessional staff, emergency situations not being responded to, late departures etc etc. Is moorings doing anything to change the way it operates and avoid these things in the future?

NOT AT ALL - We just returned from Greece where we went out on a limb and rented another moorings boat. Upon arrival, the boat had a inoperative air conditioning unit. They took a full day to get it fixed, which meant we lost a full day of our vacation. We made numerous attempts to get a credit for the lost time, and months later still nothing. After more calls we did finally get a response - and instead of a pro-rated refund, they gave us a "credit" toward another trip! Why would we EVER rent from Mooring again ? They are the worst people in the business and do not care about the safety or the satisfaction of their customers.

Did anyone else have any problems with the booking process?
We booked and paid in full for a crewed vacation starting next week. There doesn’t seem to be any one vacation planner assigned to us. When I’ve reached out to ask them to re-send paperwork or confirm the crew, the responses have been curt and sometimes without any text in the email...
I’m feeling a bit nervous about the trip - given the cost I thought that it would be more organized and friendly.
Is this normal?
I am sorry to hear you are having difficulty in organizing your charter. We generally do not assign a particular vacation planner to each charter, as any Vacation Planner should be able to assist in planning and this helps to ensure there is always someone there who can help when you call. At this point in the process, since your charter begins next week, your assigned Crew should be in touch with directly to finalize the details of your vacation. If this is not the case, please email us and direct your question and Contract number to Ian. I would be happy to assist.
