We just returned home from a fantastic week sailing the BVI's with Captain Sam and Chef Compton on the fabulous vessel, Katelyn Lee.
We spent the first night on the vessel in the marina and left the next morning on our first adventure. We went snorkeling in the area of Marina Cay and had a fabulous lunch on board. Our itinerary was a bit different as we had one couple in our group that was arriving one day late. The crew was so accommodating and allowed us to pick up our friends from a beach not too far from the Beef Island Airport. We anchored off Long Bay beach and swam to shore to enjoy the little beach bars while waiting for our friends.
Over the next six days we spent time on Norman Island, Virgin Gorda (the Bath's), Saba Rock, Bitter End, Sailed to Anegada, Cane Garden Bay, and finally Jost Van Dyke.
Our chef, Compton, was highly talented and prepared the most lovely breakfast, lunches, and dinners for us each day. The food was fresh, creative, and very flavorful.
Our favorite spot of the whole week was Jost van Dyke. We spent the first day on JVD and did a nice little hike to Bubbly Pool, followed by drinks at Foxy's Taboo before returning to the boat for lunch. After lunch we motored the short way to Great Harbour on Jost Van Dyke, where we stayed for the evening.
We invited the crew to join us for dinner ashore that evening. They have a go-to restaurant that they bring all of their charter guests to for dinner. Unfortunately this was the low point of the charter. They described the food as a "buffet" but it was actually a seated dinner served on giant family sized platters. They brought us a plate with a small green salad, a pasta salad, and a scoop of rice with red beans. The platters of food that came out were a platter of 1/2 bbq chicken and 1/2 bbq ribs. Both were overcooked and covered in bbq sauce; a platter of mahi mahi, a platter of goat, and a bowl of shrimp cooked with peppers. This meal was very pricey and cost us $550 for all of us. The price was never made clear to us ahead of time, and its not so much the price we had a problem with, but the quality of food that was presented for the price we paid. The food prepared by Chef Compton on board the vessel was 10 times better than this experience.
All in all, we had the most wonderful week. We can't wait to return again and hopefully sail with both Chef Compton and Captain Sam again in the future! We left feeling like they were part of our little boating family!

We are four couples in our 70s who own sailboats and have often chartered bareboat monohulls in the BVIs. We decided to try a crewed monohull in January for a different type of adventure. In short, we had an awesome time and hope to do it again next year!
The office was very good answering our questions and providing all the information we needed for customs, immigration, etc. We were aboard the Leah Nicole with Captain Lincoln and Chef/First Mate Max. Lincoln is a very experienced, gregarious captain and a pleasure to sail with. Because we are all very experienced sailors, he often let us take the wheel and taught us how sailing a catamaran differs from a monohull. We had requested lots of sailing vs. hitting the bars – both the wind and Lincoln made that happen! Each day he consulted with us as to the itinerary and activities to make sure he accommodated our interests. We could not have asked for a better Captain and hope to sail with him again.
The food Max provided was beyond awesome and it was impressive how such a young chef could make 5-star meals in a small galley! We had fish, shrimp, chicken, hamburgers, chili, salads, desserts and snacks (coffee pot was always full no matter what time we got up). The artistic presentation of the very generous portions was an unexpected surprise. He easily made delicious alternatives available for those who disliked particular ingredients (eggs for example). The bar was well stocked and available 24/7 along with water, soft drinks and juices. We all came home with a few extra pounds. It was a delight to get to know the very sociable Max and we very much hope to have him again as our Chef.
The Leah Nicole was very, very clean, spacious, incredible comfortable, and a fun boat to sail. The cabins had plenty of storage, good lightening, comfortable mattress, nice linens, air conditioning for those who want it) and a spacious head with separate shower (very hot water). The seating in the cockpit and on the foredeck was SO comfortable no matter what the wind (and we did have some high winds the first two days – a little unusual for this area.)
Lincoln and Max were very safety aware when it came to getting on/off the boat at docks and in/out dinghy – which we appreciated very much.

We just returned from a week cabin charter with Captain Sam and Chef Sebastian on the Katelyn Lee, a Lagoon 450F. What a wonderful experience! We had one other couple on board so it was almost like our personal charter. We visited Virgin Gorda, Anegoda, Jost Van Dyke, and Tortola islands and beaches. The scenery was amazing and the places we stopped were great fun. We snorkeled, swam, sunned and just enjoyed the cruise. The food prepared by Chef Sebastian was first class. Captain Sam made sure all the shore arrangements were taken care of and never disappointed us. Everywhere we stopped we met other cruisers who were sharing their travel experience and hospitality. Our boat was fully equipped with a paddle board, kayak and snorkel gear for all. The beverage selection was amazing and plentiful. This was our first cruise and we cannot stop talking about how great it was. We highly recommend Festiva Sailing Vacations.

What a disappointment. We had planned and longed for this trip for so long. Sadly it was ruined by the crew. Having sailed before we knew what to expect and the boat/cabins were fine. Unfortunately our hostess was unfriendly from the moment we arrived and acted as if she did not want to be there. I have no idea why she would be employed in a customer service role? She had a blazing row with one couple on the boat which left a very difficult atmosphere. When we approached Tammy Stone to resolve this she was no help at all. It seemed to my husband and I that Festiva have no interest in how their staff treat the guests. After this we had no option but to continue on our trip with a very unpleasant atmosphere. Our captain tried to make things work but the hostess would not utter a word for the rest of the trip. Each night after this both crew members seemed to loose all interest and would leave the boat in the evenings to socialise ashore. Whist we had no issue with this in principle it did leave us uncomfortable at being left at anchor with no tender and no means of communication with our captain in case of emergency! I have never been in this situation on a boat in my life. Whilst I realise things do sometimes go wrong on charters I was surprised at how little Tammy Stone at Festiva cared. She didn’t seem bothered at all and never contacted us after the issues we had on the boat to see if we were ok, and has not contacted us since. No customer satisfaction forms or surveys have been sent to us! I could never recommend Festiva to anyone and would never travel with them again.

We wanted to try sailing with a captain & cook for a more relaxing sail. We had many questions & spoke with Tammie in the reservation office several times.
Having a cook was great. Compton made delicious meals & did extra things for us like getting lemongrass to make tea for us. He set a beautiful table too!
Having a Captain was very problematic. If we had never sailed around BVI before we might have fared better. Sam (our captain) was as he said “a local captain”. He did get us to some wonderful snorkeling spots & to The Baths early enough to get a mooring. He made a mean painkiller too. However, he was NOT open to questions or suggestions & his concept of custom service needs a lot of work. One couple had asked to dive & was told the captain would help them arrange that-Sam told us “No one scuba’s on my boat!” We asked to rent a car on Anegoda instead of using Sam’s suggested taxi ($18/person one way vs $16/person for the day for the rental car). He said we were on our own, declining to help us with the reservation. We waited for him to pick us up from shore EVERYTIME!! Once a captain from another boat took pity on us & picked us up; another time we swam back rather than wait. He complained about most every aspect of his job. We only truly sailed once, Sam preferring to motor to get us places. On our last morning he had us back to the marina by 7 am but didn’t have (or didn’t want to give us) the paper forms for tipping by credit card & we had to wait for the office to open at 8:30!
There were several other small things Sam did or didn’t do but our group did not let his poor customer service ruin our trip. However, It did convince us to NEVER again sail with Festiva.

Captain Steve and Chef Andrea made for a wonderful week on a catamaran in the BVI. We have sailed a number of times, but this trip was our first experience with an on board Captain and Chef. It made such a difference. They are both very knowledgeable about the area, they took us to spots we had not visited before as well as visiting our old favorites. The food onboard was outstanding, Chef Andrea has a way with food and her use of sauces and spices. I highly recommend them for your next sailing trip

The catamaran was of high spec and cruising around the BVI for a week should have been an excellent holiday on a crewed, all- inclusive package.
However, one of the crew members, Fiona the cook, singlehanded managed to destroy this. From the offset things didn’t go well with her as on arrival she informed all 7 passengers that she expected a 20% tip when we left the boat (approx $750 per cabin. She made no effort to engage with any of the guests, and after only 3 days, erupted into screaming and shouting at one of the guests, an American gentleman in his late 70s. His mistake was to take a lime from the the fruit bowl to cut up to put in his gin and tonic. Fiona’s furious and threatening outburst was nothing short of a disgrace, snatching her kitchen knife and shouting abuse at the guest. From her attitude it was clear that she had no regret and wanted to leave the boat mid cruise. To address the situation, we asked the captain to try to mediate and called Tammy Stone, head of customer experiences at Festival Sailing. Could she replace the cook with another staff member, could we continue the cruise and cook ourselves rather than continue with the poisonous atmosphere that had been created? Sadly, Tammy was of no use whatsoever and merely offered a partial refund if we stop the cruise mid holiday. Having travelled thousands of miles for a first holiday since the pandemic, no one wanted this option. Realising that the cruise would not continue without the cook, Fiona, sensing her new found power, then threatened to leave the boat and cancel all of our holidays. I have never met someone so inappropriately placed in a customer focused role. She would later be heard loudly laughing on the phone to one of her friends that she had almost curtailed our holiday. Fortunately the skipper, Aldon, had a stern word with her and persuaded her to continue the trip. She continued to cook each day but made the skipper act as her waiter for the rest of the cruise. On a boat of this size, such behaviour dominates the tone of the trip.
Shame, as the other Festiva guests on other boats all said their crew were great, with Sam and Audrey getting special praise. Our skipper, Aldon was also an excellent host but struggled to manage his crew’s behaviour.
The product was great, the location fabulous and with the right atmosphere, should result in a wonderful trip. Sadly that was not our experience

Coming back from 7 day trip with Festiva sailing in BVI based at Hodges Creek.
If you decide to sign up with Festiva, you should only go with people you know because Festiva does not pay attention to the forms customers fill out when they assign people to a catamaran and they don’t list racist behavior as a reason to disembark guests in their charter agreement.
What happened?
3 of us on Catamaran with total 5 guests had a very bad experience because Festiva paired us (me solo and an American couple) with an older Canadian couple who could not keep their balance, did not want to sail or actually do anything beside sitting, eating, drinking wine and internet browsing. This would have been OK if they were nice social polite individuals. The first 2 days, we only did 2 short trips, motoring and spending way too much time for breakfast and lunch.
On the second night, the woman (husband is white, she is bi-racial) threw a fit and used anti-white American racists comments at us when we asked the captain to sail to Anegada, as the planned itinerary stated. They did or want to go because this meant sailing 2h30 min to go and same amount of sailing next day.
This conflict created a very awkward uncomfortable situation because this woman was clearly interested in picking fights and having her way.
We did sail to Anegada because the captain had to respect the itinerary but Festiva Sailing did nothing to request this couple to apologize for their agressive racist behavior. The days after that, the woman was still making rude comments in passing when the captain and cook were not around. The 3 of us decided to never answer or engage. We mostly stayed on the front deck when sailing because this couple had claimed the back as their favorite sitting area.
Be aware Festiva sailing (crew is captain and a cook) favors motoring and eating over discovering as many spots as possible that would allow more water activities and sailing.
This is not the company you want if you like sailing.
I hold Festiva responsible for not pairing people with similar fit levels and for not listing rude insulting behavior in their Charter agreement as a cause to be disembarked.

We have been on other Festiva sailing trips in the past and by far this was the most problematic. I had sent an email to the corporate office during our trip stating the concerns we encountered. Tammy did respond to my email stating she had spoken to base operations in Tortola and they were addressing our concerns. Unfortunately base operations called the crew member we were having issues with. This only exacerbated the situation. The crew member proceeded to accuse another guest of complaining about her. Corporate did offer to end our vacation on that day and have us sail back to Tortola with a 75% refund. Since this was a crewed charter we needed all the crew intact to complete the trip. We opted to continue on despite the uncomfortable atmosphere. Our group did run into other Festiva boats during the trip around the BVIs and they were having a very different experience - a pleasurable one! The right crew makes all the difference in the world, but we didn't experience that this trip .

Our group of four couples had such a great trip with Captain Sam and Compton, the chef/first mate/fisherman/philosopher/cooking class instructor- he is really talented at everything he does. Captain Sam was very attentive to safety, and made sure we had a good time. He taught us about the islands, the culture, the ocean, and shared family stories with us. Compton prepared absolutely amazing meals every day, and gave impromptu cooking lessons several times. His meals were by far the best we have had anywhere in the Caribbean. Advice to future travelers: ask questions about the plans each day so that you can be prepared; bring a dry bag for trips ashore in the dinghy; bring cash/ small bills for taxis; educate yourselves on customary tipping for the crew, and tip them well- they work extremely hard and deserve it. We absolutely loved our week with Sam and Compton.

For those that have done the BVI trip, did you feel crowded with the others on the boat? I feel like a week is a long time to be on a small boat with 6 other people.
Written December 20, 2023
What is the tipping amount? Is it the same amount for the captain and chef or do you have to tip both individually? Looking for a May 2021 trip for 6 of us, first time on a boat like this.
Thank you

Has anyone seen a statement from Festiva Sailing regarding the impact of Covid-19? I have gotten emails from everyone else but I haven't heard anything from them. If you have a charter with them within the next 90 days, are you still planning on going?

What is the average age of people who take this cruise. My wife is 65yrs old and I am 70yrs old
Written December 31, 2018
I am 67 and travel with folks about 10 years younger. I imagine that the festiva folks will match you with suitably aged guests. They are very accomodating.
