- Mare524Windsor, Canada312 contributionsNeat historical site with amazing viewsThis was a cool stop with great views! Our son spotted the fort on the top of the hill as we were driving through Marigot. It took us a bit to find the right road to get to it, then you park (free parking and entry) and hike up a steep set of stairs to get to the fort, for an amazing view. Great pano opportunity, and we also spotted some huge iguanas. There are no barriers/fences/signs to keep you away from drop offs so watch small kids.Visited September 2023Traveled with familyWritten September 10, 2023
- scott vStatesville, North Carolina828 contributionsA little hike up stairs but worth the view.We parked in a parking lot at base of buildings, what we thought was parking for Fort. Don't make that mistake....keep driving till you get to base of actual Fort. It was a pretty good hike just to that lot. Then once there you climb up a pretty good amount of stairs to get to actual site. But good exercise! That said, Fort is interesting. Seeing the canons, rifle ports to protect Fort itself. Pretty cool. The view is amazing.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 12, 2023
- Family F10 contributionsHistoric site with an excellent viewExcellent little hike with stellar views for a family. The site does not have safety features like in the US (eg railings over sharp drops) so be careful with young children. Beautiful elevated view of the city and Harbour with some history packed in.Visited February 2024Traveled with familyWritten February 22, 2024
- TravellerNew York City, New York3,281 contributionsVery worthwhile experienceI climbed to the top of Fort Louis in Marigot in March 2024. I began the climb up multicolor steps near the shopping mall. I reached a midway level with a parking lot and passed a shrine to Jesus on the cross. I finished the climb which was another ten minutes of steps. At the top was a cannon looking out on Marigot and Marigot harbor with a beautiful panoramic view. I did not climb further up to the ruins of the fort with the French flag. Visiting Fort Louis was a worthwhile experience.Visited March 2024Traveled soloWritten March 25, 2024
- Terry HRuislip, United Kingdom293 contributionsFantastic Views!!!Climbing up to Fort Louis affords spectacular views out to sea. It is a bit of a climb, but not too difficult if you are reasonably fit and mobile. We accessed the steps from the open market, and if you take your time to climb up to the top, the views will not disappoint you. We even saw two iguanas happily sunning themselves on the Fort's ruins!Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 25, 2024
- sarrangEdinburgh, United Kingdom161 contributionsA really nice islandWe took a local bus from Philipsburg (Dutch side, where our ship had berthed) to Marigot on the French side. Not a lot of the fort left but still worth the visit, and a better view of the area. After that we stopped at a lovely bakery and the local market and then one of the restaurants. Can't remember the names of the eateries now! But, all very civilised and good value. On the way back to the ship we found the duty free prices, along the seafront at Philipsburg, to be really good value.Visited February 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 10, 2024

- rlfriedrichFrederick, Maryland50 contributionsNice viewsOn our day trip Fun Day tour one of the stops was at Fort Louis. There are considerable steps to get to the top where the fort is located which is worth the time to do. When you get to the fort it describes the fort defended the town of Margot. The views were spectacular, you could see the island nation of Anguilla in the distance.Visited July 2024Traveled with familyWritten July 12, 2024

We made the short trek up to Fort Louis while visiting Marigot in January of 2020. It's basically a short hike up a hill from Marigot (drive up to the lot and then maybe a 5 minute uphill walk to the top) to the ruins of an old fort. There's not much to see of the fort as it's a derelict/ruin... not much in the way of signage/info, but it's worth going up just for the views over Marigot and the coast. It's otherwise nothing special... lots of trash and graffiti, and a 20-30 minute visit is all that you'll need. Go with low expectations and you'll be fine.

We took the Seagrapes History tour. I have been visiting St Martin for nearly 20 years, but I had never been up to Fort Louis. The view of Marigot and the bays is breathtaking. I can’t believe I had missed this.

Easy to find with easy access to parking & walk to summit. This is not an arduous trip however is very well worth it.
The views of Marigot & Sandy Ground are amazing. You will also find some beautiful iguana friends lounging in the afternoon heat.
It is something you should do if you are in the area.

We visited the fort last week to get the updates on all aspects. Lights, paths, signage, etc. Need some extra touch for sure. Once you reach up the fort it's one of the best views of the entire island. 360° on all the capital of marigot and Simpson bay. It's the real deal. I really recommend highly for your tours.

This is a nice spot to take pictures of the areas around Margot harbor. There isn't much to see historic wise , in fact the sign that told about the fort was all broken up on the ground.
I wouldn't come to Margot to just see the fort but if your coming to the Margot market a quick walk to the fort is good

Hi, I hope you don’t mind me writing to you. Our family is going to St. Martin in a couple of weeks and we are hoping to visit Fort Louis. The thing is that my husband has a limited mobility on the right side and uses his cane to move around. He can walk slowly, but easily 1.2 miles on the flat surface, and can handle some elevation. Do you think the climb to the top of the Fort is something one can handle in his condition ? Thank you very much for your input.

Hi: This might be challenging for your husband. Based on your description, I would say you definitely need a vehicle to drive to the parking lot first. In the event you don't have a vehicle to get to that parking lot, I'd say probably not happening. Since he walks slowly, are you on a schedule or do you have all day? If you have all day, then just take your time and the cane and provide balance for him as he makes the incline. See how it goes. It is beautiful at the very top (in my opinion). Definitely worth the effort. Hope it goes well for you. Good luck!

Hi, How far is the fort from Orient beach and the craft market can you walk easily from one to the other? Thanks , Chris
Written May 28, 2017
This would be quite the walk. It is not close to Orient Beach. Sorry!

There's no toiletries and no wi fi. But you will spend about 1 hour only to visit all place. The view is great!
