Climbing the 96 (yes, I counted every one!) steps to the top of this historic (1692 Spanish-constructed, 1789 French-completed) Fort will give you not only a sense of European colonial expansion and conflicts in the New World but, almost as an afterthought, a superb lookout over the French capital of Marigot. To me it was a reasonably stress-free climb, but... More

One of the highlights of visiting Marigot was climbing up the path to Fort Lewis. There are only a few walls remaining and it is nowhere as impressive as Fort George on St Kitts, but it does provide a little history of the island and great views of Marigot and the surrounding bay. The climb is not steep or dangerous,... More

It's an interesting walk just to find the path behind the Catholic Church to get up the hill to the Fort. Once you climb up the stone stairs to the summit, the views of the sea are spectacular. The Fort itself is not much to see but there are plaques around to fill in the history of the site.

Yet again I have been visiting a Fort, I don't really walk up to the top because of the history but because of the good view you will get when you reach the top! And yet again you will get an amazing view over Marigot Bay all over to Simpson Bay!!

The old fort is mostly gone, with just a few reconstructed walls and cannons, but, the view!! The view is definitely worth the hike and the signage to give you some of the history is also nicely done.

Just a short walk from all the shopping, the views are spectacular, this is well worth the hike up the hill. So interesting to try to imagine life in these forts back in their day.

Well worth the hike for the views of Marigot, the water, and the surrounding islands. It's a short (though somewhat strenuous) hike up the hill. The ruins of the fort are generally unprotected and you can climb to the very top, under the French flag.

You must see this view of Marigot from the fort. Of course the reason it is there was to protect the city form sea attack so there has to be a good view. Now it the spot for picture taking. A lot of history about the fort and island built in 1789 on orders of the King of France! A... More
