We have been in St.Martin a week now and can't wait to leave. Philipsburg and Marigot ugly cities. Traffic on the island is a nightmare. Philipsburg has a couple of nice original buildings tucked between the endless jewellery stores and other tacky tourist shops. This island has natural beauty but it has been pretty much ruined by very bad planning; stip malls, McDonalds, KFC outlets, derelict half-built houses, stray dogs everywhere. Northern part of the island is better if you can handle being stuck in traffic an hour to get there.

The Philipsburg Courthouse is a great place to get a photo of you in the Caribbean. The road leading to the courthouse is lined with palm trees. The St Maarten flag flying at the courthouse will let all of your facebook friends know that you are somewhere remote. Just up Front Street from the courthouse is a middle school with another photo op. If you walk by when the kids are outside, they will be standing by the fence with hands outstretched. You would think they are asking for money. Quite the opposite. They have money in their hands and are asking you to do them a favor and walk across the street with their money and buy them a treat. The smiles on their faces are priceless.

Very easy walk from cruise ship terminal. It's a poignant reminder of previous times & worth a visit if you are interested in the history of the island. It won't take long to take the short informative tour, & everything else is close by so you won't lose much time.

A lot of History here. This is right on Front Street where all the Shopping is. There is also a Straw Market here. You can buy cheap gifts here. All the Cruise ships come into this port. Diamonds are cheap here as well.

The heritage and culture preserved here is great to see. The old is mixed in with the new which makes for an interesting walk.

Water Taxi a good way to get from Pier to Beach and Front street in Philipsburg .Coach tour of Island incl boat tour of the Lagoon organised by Royal Caribbean was expensive . It did give one some indication of the destruction caused by the Hurricane two years ago with the time available in the Dutch capitol town too short .Weather on the day very mixed heavy showers

Among the bustling shops - mainly jewelry shops on front street which attract cruise line passengers with free gifts galore, sits a quaint house which at first sight seems just to be a house. However on closer inspection you notice the sign ‘Courthouse’ This Building is part of the charm of Philipsburg history a long standing court house still in use to this day. A large wooden staircase leads you to the official chamber room were you can see wooden walled panels, judges bench, tables, chairs, wooden railings for visitors etc. No photos are permitted inside the building. Worth seeing - yes
