1. You are not allowed to do this alone. You can’t get to the trail-head without a guide. Even if you could, you’d never make it to the top. There are areas not marked and you wouldn't know what direction to go.
2. The cost is $50pp with guide (not including tip). You can pay cash or CC.
4. For $1 US you can rent a hiking stick. DO THIS! You will want it.
5. Buy Water!
6. If you are driving, just search for "Gros Piton" in Google maps and it takes you right there.
7. It’s pronounced grow pee-tawn. Should save you some embarrassment :-).
8. They say it takes 4 hours to get up and back. They are correct. It took us 2hrs to top and 1.5 hours down, but we did not stop on the way down (we had a plane to catch).
9. It's not easy. Up is strenuous. It was just about all I could handle. It's basically either crawling/walking up rocks, or semi-natural steps. It is not smooth or man-made (much) at all. There are some wooden railings, but not many. We only stopped at official stops and by the top I was moving at a snail's pace, and I am pretty fit. My heart rate was at 80% of max so I was winded. Way down was not bad. It requires more concentration and hurts the knees a bit, but my heart rate was under 60% of max.
10. If we weren't in such a rush we would have taken more breaks. I would suggest that.
11. The top is anti-climactic. There is not much to see at the top. We were told that 20 min from the top is great views of Petit Piton, but we had a plane to catch.
