About
Get off the beaten path and experience Vieques the way locals do; from the back of a smooth-gaited Paso horse! Everyone will tell you, there is no better way to explore the wilder side of our island. Our guided two-hour ride takes you through the hills, open meadows, woods, river bottoms and beaches of the Esperanza area. You'll even get to try out the paso (a smoother version of the trot)! We offer rides at 8:00 am and 4:00 pm; to avoid mid-day heat. The cost is $80 per person (group ride) and $125 per person (private ride). Family and kid-friendly rides also available. Reservations are required and don't forget your camera! Please refer to our website for more information.

Our evening with the Esperanza Riding Company was definately a highlight of our time on Vieques. We were a family group of 6 ranging 22 to 68 with a variety of experience with horses. Elizabeth was an excellent leader putting us each on an appropriate horse and guiding us through the back trails and hills of the Esperanza area of Vieques with some spectacular views, a small section through a neighborhood and then out to the most beautiful beach with breaking waves into the setting sun. Her horses are solid, sane well trasined and know what they are doing.

I would highly recommend this adventure if you make to to Vieques.

I must say I have never ridden on the beach. I thought it was too cliche' for my liking....unil NOW! I still can't stop smiling. It was incredible with the turquoise water, the soft wind that melts on your skin, and a gorgeous sunset to a full moon a-rising - pure heaven. We rode to two different beaches and enjoyed a little Paso Fino gait through a field.
I will now take this ride on every vacation spot I go. I am hooked!

This was an amazing experience! On a vacation in which we also did a trip to El Yunque, a Bio Bay tour, and kayaking/snorkeling, I can easily say this was the highlight of our trip. If you have a fear of large animals/falling, I wouldn't necessarily recommend it because it'll make it difficult to enjoy, but if not I would say you should definitely consider attending this tour, especially in the afternoon when the sun will be setting creating magnificent views while you ride. You will go to beaches and farmland you otherwise won't have access to on the island and the views are amazing. We didn't have any issues with the horses during our trip and honestly I didn't have to give my horse too much input because he just followed the horse in front of him. I've only ridden a horse twice before in my life as a kid and I can say that these horses were easy to ride and docile. The instruction and guidance given during the tour itself was more than sufficient to ride safely and enjoyably. Highly recommended!

It was such a beautiful ride and evening. I was a bit worried because I have only ridden a horse a few times in my life and my husband had some physical issues, however, these folks ask a lot of questions up front so they can match you up with the proper horse. We also only had four folks in our group plus the guide. The ride was a great mix of riding through the “jungle” to the meadows and then on the beaches. Our guide, Chris, did an excellent job and at one spot on the beach took photos of all of us and sent them to our phones. I really wouldn’t have changed anything and I am happy we took the ride.

Amazing experience! The horses were all well taken care of and perfectly matched to each rider. We got to see the black sands beach and other beautiful landscapes. We went right through the ocean and we got splashed a little, but the horses knew exactly when to pause to hit the wave, then keep going. Very sure-footed and smart rides! The guides take pictures of you on the beach!!

Fair warning, if you are not staying on the island of Vieques, be prepared for a full day of travel. We did the 2pm ferry to get there for the 4pm ride, and then took the 8:30 ferry home. We didn't have any time to get food/rest, it was just ferry, taxi, ride, taxi, ferry. If you can stay on the island over night or get there extra early, it might make a better day!

Honestly this was the most beautiful ride I've ever been on. From hill-top views across the island to splashing along at sunset on Coconut beach and Black Sand beach, and strolling through the pasture as the light began to fade, every view was a treat for the eyes. Our guides paced the ride just right with a few invigorating trots here and there, and taking time for photos at some particularly gorgeous spots. I can't say enough about how great our guides were and how special the terrain was that they shared with us. Miraculously, my wife lost her phone along the ride and the guides actually found it the next day and returned it to us! These folks have a gem of a place and a really professional operation.

This was an absolutely INCREDIBLE experience from start to finish and a MUST do when in Vieques! I brought my Mom for her birthday, who had not been on a horse in many years. Initially, she was a bit nervous, but Elizabeth immediately put her at ease and made her feel like a natural! There were others in the group that were more advanced riders, and Elizabeth did an amazing job of catering to the needs of all levels of experience. The trails were so beautiful and well maintained, we were so impressed! The tour was a perfect balance of breathtaking countryside, sandy beaches, and even included a little trek thru barrio Esperanza. The cherry on top was riding down the beach at sunset, making our way down Coconut beach and Playa Negra (Vieques' black sand beach). Elizabeth was even kind enough to capture some amazing photos for us! Not only was the tour visually spectacular, but it was also very informative. Elizabeth was extremely knowledgeable about the history of Vieques and also included descriptions of local plants, flowers, and vegetation throughout the tour. It was a 5 star experience that I would 100% recommend to anyone visiting the island! Thank you Elizabeth!!!

Elizabeth is such a pro and you can tell she cares about the island and the community, and of course the horses in her herd (and her dogs). One of the dogs, Nene, accompanied us on the ride and cracked us up the whole time! Elizabeth gave great commentary about flora and fauna and the community, pre and post Maria. The ride was a fantastic route that takes you up behind the town of Esperanza (great views that you wouldn't have otherwise), through the hills, a neighborhood, and down to the beach at a couple of different points. We did the sunset ride and really enjoyed seeing the sun depart from the backs of our trusty mounts. We have done many trail rides while on vacations but this one was special, the Paso Fino horses have the extra gait, which we were allowed to try out and given nice instruction on how to work with the horses. The horses were spirited and well matched to the riders, as others have mentioned. My kids were impressed by how responsive the horses were and commented on how well trained they were. Thanks, ERC, for a great ride!

Booked a private ride with group and it was amazing! Our knowledgeable and friendly guide, Victoria, Took us on a nice ride about two hours including a little bit of introduction information. The trail was scenic and offered a lot of variety and great views of the island. I have been on several group rides, and these instructors did the best job I’ve ever seen giving a quick overview of how to ride. Even though we had more experienced riders in our group, another group ride was taking off at the same time and I observed this and appreciated that the guides and the company truly care about your experience as well as respecting the horses. I would recommend this activity to anyone Who enjoys animals and nature.

We chose to do a family farm ride as my son's first experience riding, and it was absolutely perfect. We expected to walk around a pasture, but didn't expect the pasture to have some of the most incredible views in all of Vieques... which, for me, is saying a lot—we live here! We're used to the views! But we were still blown away.

Elizabeth made my son feel so comfortable and confident that I didn't need to do a thing other than relax and enjoy my own horse. We felt very safe and well cared for. ERC came highly recommended by other moms of young kids, and they did not disappoint. We cannot wait to come back.

If this is what the family farm ride is like, I can't imagine how gorgeous the trail rides are.

Don't miss this excursion!
