About
Get off the beaten path and experience Vieques the way locals do; from the back of a smooth-gaited Paso horse! Everyone will tell you, there is no better way to explore the wilder side of our island. Our guided trail rides take you through the hills, open meadows, woods, river bottoms and beaches of the Esperanza area. You'll even get to try out the paso (a smoother version of the trot)! We offer rides at 8:00 am and 4:00 pm daily; to avoid mid-day heat. The cost is $90 per person for the 1.5 hr group ride and $150 per person for the 2 hr private ride. Family and kid-friendly rides also available. Advanced reservations are required. Please refer to our website for more information and the ability to make a reservation.

- Lena F1 contributionBest ride! The experience was amazing! The guides keep your safety in mind and pair you with a good horse. The instruction is clear and simple and you’re reminded throughout the ride what to do. The views and trail are beautiful! Our guide Trish pointed out alot of the natural foliage and was knowledgeable about the area. A must! Most of all I’d like to thank Fred my trusty ride!Visited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 28, 2023
- Stephanie C5 contributionsHeaven on earthElizabeth, her crew, and her horses were fantastic! It was a magical ride along two beaches at sunset with breathtaking views. The horses were very well behaved and were a joy to ride. i would highly recommend this memorable adventure to anyone from first time riders to advanced equestrians. thank you for such a memorable experience!Visited November 2023Traveled with friendsWritten December 4, 2023
- Joe M3 contributionsA Vieques GemMy first time to Vieques, a lot of hype is made about the Biobay tours, but don't sleep on this excursion. As a 1st time rider and traveling solo, was a little anxious about how things would go, but it did not disappoint. If you're on a time crunch, this is by far the best way to see the island. The guides are great, the horses are amazing, and just an overall great time. Could speak more highly of the operation. If you didn't get your coffee in the AM (sometimes hard to find on Vieques), this is a great way to wake up and start the day!Visited December 2023Traveled soloWritten December 15, 2023
- Fearless5588488 contributionsBest activity of our trip!Truly one of the best things we did on our whole trip! First time riding for my partner and I, but the horses were well trained and the guides were knowledgeable. We were nervous at first but felt at ease almost immediately. You will see beautiful views including the black sands beach. We are not morning people but would recommend the 8:30 tour as it does get hot by the end and we were glad to have gotten up early.Visited December 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 26, 2023
- Keri H2 contributionsThe BestI love horseback riding, and have been on many a trail ride. This was by far the most beautiful. The horses are calm and experienced; and the guides are unbelievably supportive. I cannot recommend them enough. They really take the time for you to enjoy both the horses and the island. My family of 3 will be back!Visited December 2023Traveled with familyWritten December 27, 2023
- Bonnie MNMinneapolis, Minnesota11 contributionsLook no further. Ride with Esperanza Riding CompanyElizabeth taught me more about how to ride and help yr horse than anyone. Absolutely professional, instructive and she took great pictures. If you want to ride horses in Vieques, get a reservation here. We rode on black sand beach and saw amazing vistas of the island. 100% recommended. Lovely horses, too. Especially Pepe and ricoVisited December 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten January 1, 2024
- Corey K1 contributionInexperienced? Don’t be nervous-do it!AMAZING experience. We went as a family (ages: 23, 26, 66, and 63) for the the sunset ride and none of us have ever ridden a horse before. We were eager but a little nervous due to our lack of experience, but the staff and the horses eased any of our nerves. Dante led us in the front and he had great commentary about the area and was so personable. Definitely wear long pants to avoid any chafing (we wore linen pants and leggings which were perfect!) and bring sunglasses. We just went to vieques for the day and keep in mind that if you plan to take the 6:30 ferry like we did, you won’t make it back. I think I’m a horse girl now.Visited January 2024Traveled with familyWritten January 2, 2024
- DebnBob543Cataumet, Massachusetts17 contributionsBest riding experience for all levelsThis was the fourth time I have ridden with Esperanza Riding Co. but the first time I took a private ride. I was disappointed that Elizabeth was not available but went on a fabulous two hour tour with Valerie. The trails were really fun and took us from hilltop views to on the beach. The horses are well mannered and well maintained. I would recommend this company for all levels of riders. I was very excited about the private ride option where we could go faster than the group ride. I hope to see Elizabeth next time!Visited January 2024Traveled soloWritten January 7, 2024
- Jennifer SNew Hampshire278 contributionsBucket list: checkOne of the highlights of our stay on VQS (and there were so many to choose from!), something I had always wanted to do. I had some experience riding, but my husband did not. The horses were easy-going and well taken care of. We rode Guy and Pepe. We were on a 25th anniversary second honeymoon and I booked a private ride. Elizabeth gave us the choice of the 2-hour higher view or 1.5 hour beach ride, which was no question at all. Riding through the water along the shore of Playa Negra was a dream come true! I had a crazy grin on my face the entire time. When not on the beach, meandering through woods was peaceful and serene. She did also give us the option of a sitting trot through the pasture twice and took lots of great photos of us. Highly recommend if you've ever considered it!Visited January 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten January 18, 2024
- HamFam66Stow, Massachusetts21 contributionsFabulous and Beautiful Ride!Fantastic ride start to finish! Esperanza Riding company’s horses are all in excellent health - I am a horse person so I immediately looked to their condition and in particular their feet. All were nicely cared for, the horses were great weight and condition and were receptive to attention too. Dante was our wonderful guide - he lead us over hills, through forests, on two different beaches including a black sand beach and up onto cliffs overlooking the ocean. The horses are all gaited so the pace was a new experience for me! We had a wonderful ride and Dante was an engaging and well informed person to lead us. He clearly loves his horses!Visited January 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten February 9, 2024

I went as an experienced rider with my non riding husband and my friend who stays on the island. It was great fun and a brilliant way to see the island. Riding up onto the ridge so you can see some wonderful views then heading down to visit black beach was fantastic.
Elizabeth was great at explaining what we were looking at, including a bit of history, the areas of the island we could see, the neighbouring islands, plants, fruit trees, and wildlife. Her horses were in good condition and she has lovely dogs, one of which joined us on the ride.
Fun times!

Our evening with the Esperanza Riding Company was definately a highlight of our time on Vieques. We were a family group of 6 ranging 22 to 68 with a variety of experience with horses. Elizabeth was an excellent leader putting us each on an appropriate horse and guiding us through the back trails and hills of the Esperanza area of Vieques with some spectacular views, a small section through a neighborhood and then out to the most beautiful beach with breaking waves into the setting sun. Her horses are solid, sane well trasined and know what they are doing.
I would highly recommend this adventure if you make to to Vieques.

My favorite part of my visit to Vieques was the horseback ride with Esperanza riding co. What a quality operation they are running, their animals are beautiful and so well taken care of. Our guide was very knowledgeable when it came to the horses and the sights we were able to take in were AMAZING. We rode up through the town to the top of hills through their pasture and down to the beaches. Overlooking the whole island and taking in the beautiful ocean and foliage was breath taking. Would recommend to everyone who ends up on this island!

I must say I have never ridden on the beach. I thought it was too cliche' for my liking....unil NOW! I still can't stop smiling. It was incredible with the turquoise water, the soft wind that melts on your skin, and a gorgeous sunset to a full moon a-rising - pure heaven. We rode to two different beaches and enjoyed a little Paso Fino gait through a field.
I will now take this ride on every vacation spot I go. I am hooked!

This was an amazing experience! On a vacation in which we also did a trip to El Yunque, a Bio Bay tour, and kayaking/snorkeling, I can easily say this was the highlight of our trip. If you have a fear of large animals/falling, I wouldn't necessarily recommend it because it'll make it difficult to enjoy, but if not I would say you should definitely consider attending this tour, especially in the afternoon when the sun will be setting creating magnificent views while you ride. You will go to beaches and farmland you otherwise won't have access to on the island and the views are amazing. We didn't have any issues with the horses during our trip and honestly I didn't have to give my horse too much input because he just followed the horse in front of him. I've only ridden a horse twice before in my life as a kid and I can say that these horses were easy to ride and docile. The instruction and guidance given during the tour itself was more than sufficient to ride safely and enjoyably. Highly recommended!

We chose to do a family farm ride as my son's first experience riding, and it was absolutely perfect. We expected to walk around a pasture, but didn't expect the pasture to have some of the most incredible views in all of Vieques... which, for me, is saying a lot—we live here! We're used to the views! But we were still blown away.
Elizabeth made my son feel so comfortable and confident that I didn't need to do a thing other than relax and enjoy my own horse. We felt very safe and well cared for. ERC came highly recommended by other moms of young kids, and they did not disappoint. We cannot wait to come back.
If this is what the family farm ride is like, I can't imagine how gorgeous the trail rides are.
Don't miss this excursion!

If you're on the fence about whether to upgrade to a private trail ride, DO IT. My friend and I were glad we did. Our guide was able to share lots of info about the plants and animals of the area, and we were able to trot (and even canter!) quite a bit. Of course riding along the beach was magical, but we also had a transcendent moment riding up over a hill as the ocean came into view. Esperanza Riding Company is a completely professional operation and should be part of your Vieques visit.

It was such a beautiful ride and evening. I was a bit worried because I have only ridden a horse a few times in my life and my husband had some physical issues, however, these folks ask a lot of questions up front so they can match you up with the proper horse. We also only had four folks in our group plus the guide. The ride was a great mix of riding through the “jungle” to the meadows and then on the beaches. Our guide, Chris, did an excellent job and at one spot on the beach took photos of all of us and sent them to our phones. I really wouldn’t have changed anything and I am happy we took the ride.

Another success story here of an extremely nervous/scared rider who by the end of the day didn’t want to get off his horse! Thanks to Elizabeth and Trish for really making our youngest feel comfortable and confident in his horse. We were on the fence about booking this trip because he was so anxious about the ride and so glad we took the leap of faith to do so. The scenery is absolutely gorgeous.

If I could give this review more than 5 stars, I would!
I loved this experience so much! Elizabeth, Jackie, and Megan were great guides. They are very informative, helpful, and knowledgeable. They take the time to inform their guests on proper horse riding techniques so that the ride is enjoyable and safe for not just the clients, but the horses too.
I really admired the love and attention they pay to their horses. The horses are beautiful and so well taken care of. They look healthy and are extremely well trained.
The ride itself was amazing! We went through the hills up above Esperanza and the views were gorgeous. We also ventured off to Coconut Beach and Playa Negra. We signed up for the 2 hour tour and were very happy with everything.
I would HIGHLY recommend taking a guided tour with Esperanza Riding Company to anyone who visits Vieques. As a resident, I am definitely going to come back for more riding adventures!
Thank you so much to Elizabeth and the entire staff at ERC for this great experience and all you do. I can't wait for my next ride!

When riding the horses are there any hills to go up and down ..we rode in Bermuda and it was terrible steep hills going to the beach and steep hills getting back to where we started very nervous trip

There are some gradients given the nature of the terrain but they are short. Most of the ride is on the flat. My husband had never ridden a horse before and was fine :)

My husband and I are in our early 50's and he is worried that we will be sore for the next day or 2...anyone out there a bit older than can answer his concerns?
Written March 28, 2017
I'm 62 and my girlfriend is in her early 50's, we were both a bit sore but that has little to do with age and a lot to do with the fact we haven't ridden recently. A hot shower helped a lot! It's a great experience!

I'm looking at the ranch in Sandwich, Cape cod.
We are passing through Sandwich on one day only. October 6th.
we are two women, experienced riders.
Can we set up a trail ride mid to late day without having to wait until 4pm?
Are there any shorter beach trails that aren't so costly?
thanks,
Dawn

Hi Maritza,
Thank you for your interest in riding with us! We offer a two-hour trail ride that takes you to two different beaches that you can't access by car, hill tops offering great views of the island, and wooded, open meadow and river bottom trails. You'll be riding our local Paso Fino-related horses that have a smooth gait and are suitable for first timers up to advanced riders. We offer rides at 8AM and 4PM to avoid the heat of the day. The cost is $80 for the group tour and $110 for the private tour. Please do check back on our website for more info, photos and to make a reservation request. I apologize for the inconvenience yesterday, but whatever the problem was, it was resolved quickly.
Kind Regards,
Elizabeth, Owner of ERC
