We dropped by this interesting little shop at the recommendation of our local tour guide. My wife has a very narrow head and finds it difficult for this reason to buy a good hat.

The shop carries a large variety of different styles and colors and has a wide selection of ribbons for a hat band to enliven the design the plainer variety of Panama hats. In short, there was a huge selection of alternatives, so we thought we would give it a try -- and we were very glad that we did.

One of the owners, a very pleasant and extremely well spoken young man, took immediate charge and showed my wife all of the many alternatives that might work for her. She first elected a basic shape for her hat, then she picked a perfectly colored ribbon for the hat band, finally, the owner very carefully custom fitted that hat to her head. When all of this was done (it took about half an hour), the owner showed her exactly what needed to be done to properly clean and maintain the hat.

At the end of the process, my wife was the very proud owner of a gorgeous, custom-fitted Panama hat that makes her look as glamorous as a movie star. What is truly amazing about all of this is the very reasonable cost: a little more than $80.00 for the hat that she purchased.

If you want to acquire a quality Panama hat, I highly recommend a visit to Ole the next time you visit San Juan!

After leaving El Gapon hat shop disappointed i went a block around the corner and found this HAT shop. By the name you wouldn't know it as a hat shop but that was there main focus. The address is 105 Fortaleza.

The service was exceptional. I didn't know what kind of hat i wanted and tried on many. The cuban style hat i purchased was brown in color with a band around it (i was able to choose from many band options). The hat with band was $85 and i just love it.

They stitched in a leather identification piece at no charge which gave the hat a very personal appeal.

They were so nice and friendly i would highly recommend this hat shop if your in Old San Juan.

I went to Puerto Rico to visit friends and this was on my "must see/do" list. The sun hasn't been my friend in a long time, the feeling is mutual. I wanted an oversize hat to keep the sun off of me and they ladies helped me find the hat. Thankfully the style that I bought was easy to roll up to put in my suitcase.

I would definitely go inside and look, but if you are going to buy a hat I would buy one of their less expensive ones. I bought one of their panama hats for $150. I found the service very perfunctory, and in the end feel the hat is pretty ordinary. Also, they seemed annoyed that that I asked them to stretch hat, it was too tight. But then, I am spoiled by a fabulous milliner in NYC, Susan Van der Linde. And I do wear the hat.

My significant other and I stopped in on a Sunday evening. Prices for hats were ridiculous considering that they weren't even made there.

Unimpressed.

Someone has a really good marketing person, and is living off the past article.

Extremely fun shopping with good options and custom service. The folks are nice, but not too pushy. The owner is also a great source of tourist info.

Don't forget to check their vintage prints and silkscreens from the 60s and 70s, a good and interesting selection.

Easy to miss the entrance but worth looking around to find it. Also an amazing collection of artifacts, collectables and antiques.

It is nice to walk in and look. But the lady who was running the shop didn't acknowledge us or ask us if we needed help. She was too busy flirting with a a young male customer. Pretty disappointing considering I was interested in a hat for myself.

We had read about this place in a New York Times article. When we first got to Old San Juan, Ole Curiosidades was our first stop. We wanted to get a custom-fitted Panama hat and ended up walking out with 2 hats each. The woman who helped custom fit our hats was very helpful. She knew her trade for sure. Furthermore, when we inquired about places where locals eat, she was even more helpful. We were glad we asked, and we had a great lunch!

Ole Panama is a hidden gem in Old San Juan. The green awning will lead you into this interesting store. Its' a wonderful place to purchase beautiful woven panama-style hats. They're hand-made works-of-art. The owner, Guillermo, will help you choose a hat that is both beautiful and functional. Venture further into the store and you will also discover a treasure trove of Puerto Rican photos, art, trinkets, and treasures. Ask him for details and you will receive a personal history lesson. It's more than a hat store. Enjoy!
