About
Balneario El Escambron is a little beach, just to the east of Old San Juan. It is a family-friendly beach, with a small crescent of clean sand and usually calm waters, thanks to the coral reef a short distance from the beach.

- GeneralShamuNew York City, New York1,174 contributionsBeach DayThis beach is lovely, relatively clean and has proper facilities as well (multiple clean restrooms), a washing station, etc... There is paid parking available as well. The beach is rather placid so it is definitely kid friendly. Multiple shade options from the trees. Can also rent beach chairs, parasols, etc... Food vendors are present - we were there on a weekday so there were only two but assume it's packed on weekends.Visited December 2023Traveled with familyWritten December 26, 2023
- jakexvx3 contributionsFinished my PADI Cert here!I finished my open water diver certification with Josh at Scuba Dogs. I had an amazing time, and the shop was nothing but professional and informative. They processed my PADI paperwork right away so I could immediately book some more adventures after completing my certification. I would come back to this shop just to say hi and do some snorkeling which they also offer!Visited February 2024Traveled soloWritten February 16, 2024
- Kate NWorcester, Massachusetts25 contributionsBeautiful spotGorgeous beach with a good amount of surf. The water was beautiful as well. There were a lot of rocks, so it was important for swimmers to be cautious while in the water. There were people selling food and ice cream, so we didn’t worry about bringing anything but water with us. There are bathrooms, changing areas and a paid parking lot. We spotted lots of cats that live on the beach too!Visited March 2024Traveled with friendsWritten March 17, 2024
- R F13 contributionsBeautiful, clean beach just a short Uber ride from the cruise port. Highly recommend! We were visiting San Juan on a cruise ship and decided to check out this beach after reading other reviews. It was fabulous! We took an Uber from the cruise port that was around nine dollars and got there in about 10 to 15 minutes. There were showers, bathrooms and we rented a chaise lounge and an umbrella for $15. They took cash, PayPal, or credit cards. It was a great place to swim and relax. Crystal clear water and because of the break wall of rocks, it was very calm. The beach was clean, no seaweed. The bathrooms were clean and there were a couple of food trucks, selling ice cream drinks, snacks, and even some beach products. There were lifeguards, and it felt very safe and a great way to spend the day. There is a Walgreens directly across from the cruise port, so we went in there, and grabbed some sodas, bottled water and snacks to take with us. A really fun, family friendly place to spend a day.Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 20, 2024
- JudyrosArlington Heights, Illinois81 contributionsGreat facilities with warm n serene waters for kiddosBeautiful warm n serene water beach in San Juan. We Ubered there. There’s parking there but idk anything about it. There’s a lifeguard, bathroom n showers to rinse off. Some independent business locals rent chairs/ umbrellas that run out about 11am, there’s also some ppl there selling snacks n drinks, so bring cash for sure! The beach fills up by noon on weekdays, I’m sure it gets very crowded on weekends.Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 29, 2024
- MK3New York City, New York8 contributionsA lovely, clear, body of waterStunning body of water. This is a Blue Flag beach - it meets certain environmental requirements, and you can tell, just by how clear the water is. Wear goggles or a diving mask, and you'll witness schools of fish swimming by and the artificial reef. Went scuba diving here and got to see turtles. Thanks to barriers, the water is very calm.Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 30, 2024

It is located in Puerta de Tierra section of town, next to the former Normandie Hotel. To the west you can see the Capitol Dome and El Morro Fort. To the east there is a part of the Old City Wall and a fortification to explore. And you can see of the Condado/Ocean Park and Isla Verde waterfront areas. - mark l1 contributionSan Juan reviewLoved Old San Juan and the historic things to see . The night life was vibrant and the food options fantastic . Make sure to go to Barrachina the home of the first Pina Colada , Isle verde and Contado beach and the TMOBILE center . Stayed just outside Contado at the Windchimes boutique hotel . Old but clean and comfortable , good bed , hot water , nice sheets , great airconditioning . No concierge and the day staff was of no help in where to go or what to do . Beach is walkable but better to drive 10 minutes to one of the other beaches. Humid as heck in August so pack light clothing . Ubers are easy to get and affordable . Always felt saveVisited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 18, 2024

This beach has two parts, the longer and shorter portion. If you don't explore, you won't know the other portion is there. There are many scenic picturesque areas, including the old fort structure. We stayed in the shorter area where people were doing snorkel and scuba tours. I'd say save your money on the snorkel tour as there is nothing to really see. We saw no less that 8 groups and I felt bad they payed money. Entrance is free and you pay like $5 to park if you have a car. We took a cab and had our our snorkel gear. Of the 3 hours here, I saw a lot of minnows (real tiny fish), a very few (less than 5) other colorful fish and one brown turtle. That's not good snorkeling, in my opinion. Water is cloudy but you can see through it. If you don't feel comfortable snorkeling and are learning, this is a good place to practice. It's a nice spot to swim and enjoy, relax the day away. We saw locals and tourists. Safe to leave your stuff on the beach. Some areas had shade. It's the best spot you will get in San Juan itself. I'd recommend if you don't want to travel far.

Family of four (9 and 4) visited this beach while on a Disney Cruise stop. Sought this beach out as reportedly has good snorkeling with man made reef. Waves were higher when we went and water was rough for our kids. Snorkeling was average. Bathrooms were clean but no food was available when we there. Cabs will take you to the beach but you have to call to get them to pick you up. Not the most convenient if on a cruise. We ended up leaving after an hour and headed over to Isla Verde which was much more enjoyable for our family.

Beautiful beach! Incredible waters!! Very nice to rest lying under a palm tree. We spent a day cruising in San Juan and then touring old San Juan we went to the most beautiful beach in the area, highly recommended. We went by Uber and it only cost us 8 dls for 6 people total. Highly recommended! There are lifeguards and that's good!

we had snorkeling at Escambron beach. It was scheduled for 3:30 p, stating that people must be on time. After we arrived before 3:30 pm, we just waited there with no explanation. At about 4;00 pm, A female instructor came slowly and get snorkeling gear ready for everyone. It was already 4;30pm. After entering to water, there was bare fish you can see, the water was shallow and its quality was turbid. But you can see a big turtle once or twice during this one hour. The pro video was sloppy, took mine when I was above the water, there was no point to take this kind of video. The instructor even sent me the wrong video (someone else). The whole trip was very flat and not excited at all.

I came over from the Condado Hilton to snorkel for a bit. I took an Uber because I wasn’t sure how walkable it would be but I walked back and it was super pleasant. The Uber dropped me right by the Caribe Hilton and the Puerto Rican Sports Hall of Fame, which made it a quick walk back to the cove/marine park area. I was there midday on a Monday, and it was very quiet. Just a few snorkelers and one girl walking her dog. Before snorkeling I walked around a bit and a short walk along the rocky shoreline brought me to the beach. It looked nice, relaxed, and uncommercial. I walked back to the cove and rented gear from SCUBA Dogs - the staff girl was really nice and it was just $27 for fin, mask, snorkel, and locker rental. I snorkeled for probably 90 minutes or so. I saw one turtle but lots of fish. Visibility wasn’t great if you’re used to quality dive sites, but the water was pretty calm.

I was here in August, getting off the cruise I took a taxi that took 10 minutes and asked for $15.
Arriving at the beach there is a couple of gentlemen who rent sunbeds for $10 each. The sea, WONDERFUL! I had arrived with low expectations but the beautiful beach and heavenly sea. I gave it 4 stars because there is nothing to eat at the beach!

I read all the reviews of this beach. Reluctantly we went to this beach because we were exploring Old San Juan area. It was the most beautiful beach. Let me start by saying I am convinced prior reviews must have been there on days much different than us. The water was crystal clear - crystal!! We did see the snorkeling excursion go out so we decided to follow their path. It was not that great. A bit murky by the swimming roped off area only but there was not much out there. The left side along the rocks was the clearest and we did see much sealife all the way out the to roped left side. Saw lobster, flounder, sea cucumbers, lots of sergeant majors and blue fish along with many yellow striped ones. We wondered what was on the other side of the rocky area. So we walked over to the other side to see if we could see more fish on the other side. There was some but not as many. We kept swimming a little further and then suddenly, there was coral and tons of fish. We have snorkeled so many places in the world. I would rate this a 6 out 10. It was so clear and lots to see. Large sea fans, large brain corals and large yellow corals, tube coral and larger fish. So much fun! We ran into four large manatees. They were just feeding on the grass. They just kept eating and we floated around them just watching. So when someone says this place has no good snorkeling, my guess is that they never tried the other side of the rocks. We snorkeled straight across until the beach ran out and then we cut back to shore. There were groups snorkeling on the other side of the bridge and pretty gross looking water for turtles. If you want to see turtles, go to Culebra. We saw about 10 on Culebra snorkeling with Kayaking Puerto Rico.

Fish! A few locals tossed bread bits and attracted smaller to medium fish that were not shy around swimmers. We saw people snorkeling. A pop-up shop offers basic snorkeling gear, water and basic beach supplies.
$5 parking and walking distance to a seaside history trail and the very busy El Hamburguer make this an overall wonderful day trip bargain.
