The Plaza de Armas of San Juan is one of the main squares in San Juan, which was designed to serve as the original main square for the city. it dates back to Spanish colonial times, One side of the plaza, you'll find San Juan's official town hall building, and on another the Puerto Rico Department of State.

like any famous square, street performances, local food stalls, everything is here.

To better enjoy the Plaza de Armas, grab a coffee and a Puerto Rican pastry from any of the local spots and grab a sit in any of the public benches. also, you won't find wendy in the new avatar anywhere else.

We loved visiting the plaza. There are more "locals" here and greater opportunities to practice speaking Spanish. There is a pharmacy and a little grocery store if you need to stock up on supplies. Bring a mask if you plan to enter the pharmacy.

When I think of an old European city and the town centered around Main Plaza this is it. Surrounding this Plaza are shops and restaurants. People are Gathering here to either hang out or begin their adventures in the city. According to our tour guide lots of events take place in this Plaza. This is definitely the center beating heart of Viejo San Juan.

This is the central square in San Juan, like in many Latin American cities. In the middle is a nice fountain with several street performers and around state edifices with a beautiful Town Hall.
The square had a special appearance due to Christmas celebrations, specially at night. It also seems a popular place with locals who gather here.

Interesting fountain in a nice centrally located city plaza. The four statues depict the four seasons. Nice place to pull up on a bench if you have time. Another fountain not on during my visit, sort of unusual.

In a city with many wonderful plazas, this one stands out. It's a big space, about a city block long, surrounded by some beautiful buildings. There are several restaurant options here, along with a nice grocery store, a Marshall's if you can believe it, city hall, and some cute shops. In the evening it's a great place to hang out with an ice cream and people watch, and some evenings there is music and other entertainment. A must see in San Juan.

We lucked out that no cruise ship were in that day. A thousand fewer tourist wandering and congesting the walks. Just sit on a bench with a cold drink and watch life happen by. There is a proper grocery store and a good minimart adjoining the plaza.

Beginning at 7:00 AM, the Town Hall blasts a recording of church bells. It is so loud that the sound distorts and becomes painful to the ear. Although Ground Zero is Plaza de Armas, the noise penetrates a km-wide radius. So, if you don’t want to get up at 7:00 AM, don’t book in Old San Juan. Believe me, you will regret it. I understand from the locals that the noise torture is a new policy that began in 2015. My luck! But at least as a tourist, the trip will end soon.

Location of this hotel is awesome. It is just on Plaza de Armas. It used to be a hospital which was converted to a hotel.
However, three major issues lowered my scores,
1. The rooms have no windows. There is NO sunlight in the room. Almost like prisoner rooms in San Cristobal Fort !
2. Although it said there is WiFi, but it is available on the lobby area which is really small.
3. Hot water is inconsistent, pretty bad situation in the morning.
4. The picture on their website is wrong, there is no refrigerator in room. You have to get ice from the front desk. There is no access to microwave.
5. The hotel will not give you any shampoo or conditioner. There is soap dispenser (like fast food restaurants) in the shower stalls.
Bottom line, it is about $100/night but you have to live with the issues.

I didn't know this delightful plaza was a TripAdvisor-recognized site when I sat on a bench next to a bronze statue of a man. I thought he was human, not wanting to disturb his gaze of Fuente de 4 Estaciones (Four Statues Fountain) with twisting a map every which way trying to find my whereabouts. This plaza is surrounded by cafes, shops, and bars serving ubiquitous mojitos. It is loaded with trees---and the namesake from nearby Pigeons Park. Plaza de Armas seems to be a gathering place for locals, and an attraction for tourists perhaps because it is bordered by Fortaleza, Cruz, San José, and Cordero streets, and is adjacent to Municipal Tourism Information Booth, where I obtained a much better map for self-guided walking tours.
