Stayed in an Airbnb condo steps from the beach. The beach is wonderful, and the ocean beautiful. Plenty of room on the beach so nobody was too close. Great beach to take a walk on. In a very safe neighborhood. Walkable to many restaurants, and stores.

Super safe and gives you a true vibe of Puerto Rico. Beaches and streets full of locals. Non touristy good restaurants. Just an awesome and friendly vibe.

Ocean Park is one of the most picturesque, serene, calm and yet unobtrusive scenes to park for a nice day in the sun. A respected crowd by the local vendors, and the main street filled to varied eateries. We traveled with our very small pet and stayed at a boutique hotel with some amazing food. The only time we left the hotel was for breakfast because they offered a free continental, but we wanted breads, pastries, and eggs : ) GO TO PAMELA'S RESTAURANT! (the secret). Went went back in August, and going right back to stay at the same place this week for another 5 days…Puerto Rico in our future??? hmmm…Ocean Park may have just made that decision for us. : ))

We rented an apartment in Ocean Park while on vacation and loved this area. There is a beach, plenty of restaurants and shops within walking distance. We plan on booking the same apartment when we return to San Juan. It was very modern w/ a rooftop balcony and really affordable.

I wrote a review primarily about Playa Ocean Park, but I realize, since Ocean Park is a section of San Juan it might be helpful to know more about the general area: First, Ocean Park is just down the shore from El Condado - the famous section of San Juan known for its big hotels and casinos. In contrast, Ocean Park is a more residential area, but still upscale with lots of high-rise apartments and condos. It's well-kept, clean and the police maintain a visible presence to discourage crime. There are a few smaller hotels, two sister boutique hotels like Wind Chimes, where I stayed and which I reviewed and Acacia, also small but charming and well located. There small shops along Avenida McCleary, the main drag, which sell food, frozen yogurt, etc. and a corner gas station that has an outdoor display of various wines and spirits for purchase. One "happy place" is Mango's (also reviewed separately), which attracts a young professional crowd and serves good food as well as good libations. In general, this was the vibe I got from the entire area, including the beach-goers. Unless you're really into the casinos, I'd tell you to check it out as an alternative to El Condado with the same easy 75 cent bus service to Viejo San Juan.

I will probably only stay in The Ocean Park area from now on. Everything that you need is there. Food, culture, shopping, lodging, and so much more.

It was never really crowded and I never worried about leaving my stuff up on the beach while I was in the water. It is only a 5 minute walk to any restaurants and was a block from our hotel. Beautiful area - would love to visit again.

I LOVE OCEAN PARK! (Yes, I’m shouting.) I’ve stayed here twice in my two vacations to PR and will stay here again in the future. This area is more residential than Condado or Old San Juan and not as dense or crowded. The beach here is better than in Condado; larger sand area and less people which is perfect for me. Here you’ll find more local establishments and people who actually live there though there are chain stores here too. Plus it is a short walk to the “action” in Condado. It’s an hour & 45 min walk into Old San Juan so you may want to take the bus or taxi. There are smaller, boutique type hotels here but I’ve always rented a condo/apt and both times it has turned out fabulously (see Posada Colonial review for my most recent stay). If you stay here, learn some Spanish as many of the locals do not speak English but they will try to help you nonetheless. And there are plenty of great places to eat; see my reviews for those too.
If you want to stay in a quiet, residential area a short trip away from all the sites and sounds the greater San Juan area has to offer, Ocean Park is THE place to stay! I WILL be back!

This quaint little neighborhood is sandwhiched in between the two main tourist beaches of San Juan: Condado Beach and Isla Verde. I stayed in a Bed and Breakfast in Ocean Park for a week in June 2008. The neighborhood is gated at night so that people can't just drive in. Still, most of the homes have tall fences all the way around. Most of the houses have charm and are there are some real gems that are right on the beach and currently in disrepair. A good investor could make a killing in this neighborhood. One tip: Eat at the famous Puerto Rican bakery and cafe called Kasalta. Fantastic pastries and sweets.

I just read a review where a 60 year old woman had her purse snatched on February 3rd in the Ocean Park area of San Juan on McLeary Street. This is one of the nicer streets and can give you a false sense of security. But if you follow a few guidelines, you should be safe. NEVER carry a purse with you in public. Put your driver license, credit cards, a little money in pockets--hidden pockets are best! If you are a man, carry your wallet in a front pocket. Better yet, keep your driver license, etc. in a pocket--the more hidden, the better. Try not to be on the streets after dark, especially if you are a woman alone. These are general guidelines you should follow no matter where you travel but especially if you are alone. Also, the beach is lovely in Ocean Park but not safe after dark. The water is fun to watch the Kitesurfers but in general the water has a strong undertow and is not safe for the general public and certainly not safe for children. But that being said, it is a wonderful area and beach if you use common sense precautions.

how do we get there from old San Juan, are there city busses?
Written January 31, 2015
There are city buses. There may be transferring involved. It can be anywhere from. $15-$20 cab ride. On your way you can get off the bus in El Condado and stroll the hotels and shops.

Greetings, I would like to know what else there is to do in the Ocean Park area of San Juan. Are there nearby locations to site see, buy locally made goods, good restaurants etc.? I am considering staying in that area of San Juan and would like to know if there are other attractions very close by (and how close by) other than the beautiful beach. Many thanks!

Cafe Mam for a vegetarian lunch and Bagau restaurant were our favorites in the Ocean Park area. Ocean Park was more of a residential area and you could walk downtown. We stayed at the Dreamcatcher in Ocean Park and they offer small tours to the rainforest and other outdoor attractions that you can book ahead of time. As the other person said, Old San Juan was better for the sightseeing but we also spent a few days at Ocean Park for the beach and rainforest. Bring tennis shoes with good traction. See my reviews. Bring Off mosquito spray. San Juan has mosquitos even when in November. Great trip though.
