About
More than just an art museum, Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico hosts concerts and festivals as well. The Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico (MAPR), a non-for-profit organization, was inaugurated on July 1, 2000, as a legacy for the Puerto Rican people. The mission of the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico is to enrich the lives of its diverse audiences by making accessible and promoting the knowledge, appreciation, and enjoyment of visual arts from Puerto Rico and the world. The MAPR engages diverse communities to facilitate learning experiences about the visual arts through: the growth of a well-researched permanent collection exemplifying significant and representative examples of Puerto Rican art from the sixteenth century to the present; a dynamic program of exhibitions supported by engaging and exciting educational and cultural programs that collectively deepen the understanding of the role of the visual arts in the human experience and contribute to the creation of a curatorial legacy; documentation, research, interpretation, preservation, and conservation of the collection and the visual arts patrimony of Puerto Rico; and alliances with local, regional, and international museums and institutions to advance the knowledge of, access to, and understanding of the visual arts of the world.

Highly recommend especially current exhibit “Puerto Rico Pleural” this really gives you a sense of popular movements and National identity in PR that only Art can. Staff was incredibly helpful and engaged and proud of the exhibits. Lovely sculpture garden as well, highly recommend as a way of truly experiencing pier to Rico. Buy tickets ahead of time - 2 shows to chose from plus general admission (very affordable).

The museum displays an impressive and eclectic collection of Puerto Rican art. We saw both the permanent collection and two of the special exhibitions (other than the European romantic paintings). Some of the works I liked best were the installations and, at the other end of the scale, posters and other works on paper. The garden out back is a beautiful place to walk and sit. I only wish there as a cafe or other place to take a break and refreshments. (Perhaps when COVID recedes further.) You will need proof of vaccination and to wear a mask.

The art in Puerto Rico Plural ranged from heart rending to delightful to downright outrageous. I love it all! The security guard/docents were very knowledgable and greatly enriched our experience. Very impressed. The facade images on the front of the building are intriguing and make you want to come in and see more.

It started out with the vaccine card checkers not paying attention and missing a tenth of those who walked on the door. They were too busy looking at their phones or gabbing with each other.

Then the ticket sellers were the slowest of ever seen in any line anywhere. They spent more time talking and laughing with each other than doing their jobs. We spent forty minutes in line on a very slow museum day. Do not come here.

the staff was extremely friendly. they gave my elderly grandma a wheelchair and she was able to explore the whole museum since there are ramps and elevators throughout. there are three floors of exhibits and a beautiful sculpture garden with a koi pond in the back. only a few pieces had plaques explaining them as most just said the artist and the style of art. the plaques did have english translations on them.

This museum is the embodiment of Puerto Rico's artwork, and houses so much beautiful local artwork that it would be an absolute shame to visit San Juan without visiting this museum. The artwork is superbly curated, and the entire museum encourages the quiet absorption of local art. The staff are clearly knowledgeable about the art, and are proud of working here. Be sure to go to the gardens in the back and enjoy the scenery.

This is art that tells the story of an island and its people. There is complexity in the Puerto Rican history. The building facade was a gorgeous work of art. Museum entry fee was a very good value. It was easy to spend a few hours enjoying the art. There was also a nice French restaurant in walking distance.

This is a fun place to spend a few hours, especially if, like us, you have time to kill in San Juan before an evening flight home. There is a nice parking deck on the museum grounds, so you don't need to worry about finding a place to park, and it's about a 15 minute drive to the airport rental car return.

The museum has Puerto Rican art from colonial times to the present, including posters, multimedia, and wooden santo figures, as well as more traditional art forms. There are also several traveling exhibits. All of the exhibits include explanations in English. Outside is a nice sculpture garden with a fishpond, so if you have kids with you, this is a nice place for them to play and let off steam before they need to go sit on a plane for four hours.

The art museum is located on De Diego Ave in the Santurce neighborhood of San Juan. This is a beautiful building of large galleries containing paintings, installations, and special exhibits of Puerto Rican art. Don't miss the scuplture garden, designed as a tribute to Monet, with lily pads and a little foot bridge.

It may help to be familiar with the artists beforehand, but you can enjoy discovering the art on your own. Gallery notes are in Spanish and English.

Allow yourself 2-3 hours to view all the pieces at a leisurely pace. There may also be special programming in the theatre during your visit.

Try lunch at Pikayo, the museum restaurant. It is quite pricey, but if your budget includes a few expensive meals out, include this visit. (there is also a moderate-price cafeteria)

We hope this museum ends up under “Things to Do” instead of the “Shopping” category as it deserves its respect! My husband’s research on TripAdvisor did not find this gem due to the misclassification. Thanks to our guesthouse recommending Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico (MAPR) did we find one of the best places to go in San Juan. My husband and I were looking for something different than all of the trappings of Old San Juan so we ended up walking to this wonderful and relatively new art museum in the Santurce neighborhood of San Juan. Since we had walked all the way from Mcleary Street in Ocean Park, finding the entrance to MAPR took a little bit of work, but once we made it inside, it was worth the effort. The museum houses the island's most important works of art from the 17th century to the present. A lot of what we saw was contemporary art. Admission prices are very affordable.
The museum’s docents are very proud of their heritage, and they were very helpful. A very friendly docent took us inside a roped off area of one of their largest exhibits, the re-creation of an entire barbershop by the artist Pepón Osorio. The modern art was fascinating, and the docent’s explanations of what is in it made it a very stimulating and fascinating experience. All of his insight made our visit a great experience.
During our visit, the museum had a special exhibit: “Pablo Picasso ‘Vollard Suite'”. The special collection was about a hundred prints by the famous Spanish painter. These had been commissioned by the French art dealer and publisher, Ambroise Vollard, from 1930 to 1939. The price of admission to Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico included this special exhibit, which was quite surprising to us as most museums like to add a hefty charge for special exhibits. What a wonderful surprise in a city that charges a lot for most things!
The back of the building opens on to a beautiful sculpture garden, which both my husband and I thought was worth the price of admission by itself. In the beautiful gardens were sculptures, various art pieces, waterfalls, and lots of Koi (Japanese Carp). Even though it was a hot and sticky day in Puerto Rico, the gardens were cool and refreshing. The variety of plants in this oasis had us sitting at various benches for quite a while. We were impressed with what MAPR had done in the middle of the urban jungle.
Unless one speaks Spanish, getting information from the museum’s website before visiting is a little bit difficult. Using an online translation website helps. We wish more places would give one the option of languages to read it like most European websites. Of course, the EU dictates that for those countries. Allow yourself two to three hours to view all the pieces at a leisurely pace. Even though we did not go there for a meal, try eating at Pikayo, the museum’s highly-rated restaurant. We understand it is quite pricey, but the reviews we saw at TripAdvisor for the restaurant make it sound like a delightful destination.
