Nice place for cheap shopping. It gives you a good idea of what is locally produced: clusters of bananas, pineapples, yams, mangoes... Lot of food kiosks and other shops. Saturday... read more

This is certainly an excellent place to go if you want to immerse yourself in the culture and get acquainted with the locals. However, the market is certainly in a poorer part of San Juan. I would certainly not recommend that anyone take anything that points them out as a tourist. Parking is minimal but there is a small parking... More

More than 30 years have passed since I visited the Plaza del Mercado de Río Piedras. It is as authentic as you can imagine years ago and still is. We had lunch at C11-Cafetería Sabor Latino. Food was delicious as as well as customer service. Ladies were so nice and served a lot, I mean A LOT of food. Overall,... More

Had to have 2 cops give me the correct address here because Trip Advisor has it listed wrong. Upon arriving, we were greeted by an overwhelming odor of urine, expired fruits, and closed shops. Apparently they are mostly closed until Thursday-Sunday, but I cannot imagine that the stench of urine will ever be gotten rid of. $8 for 10 minutes... More

Nice place for cheap shopping. It gives you a good idea of what is locally produced: clusters of bananas, pineapples, yams, mangoes... Lot of food kiosks and other shops. Saturday is good day to get there. The main market place is surrounded by many shops and street vendors. A real out off the beaten tracks area, it is not a... More

Visited this place while on a cruise stop. I must say, coming from an island life, this was a very welcomed experience. To see the local "Farmers Market" was something i didnt expect as most tours dont carry you into the heart of the city. While there I was able to sample to local meats, pastries, produce and beer. Definitely... More

Taste local produce, food, or drinks, in this "off-the-beaten-path" market, where all the locals go to shop. Area is safe, day or night, but you know the drill, always beware of your surroundings, wherever you travel. Try a local fruit smoothie (with rum). Tasty! OK, go out and have some fun!

The market itself was not that large, but it was fun to walk around and see all of the produce. We bought several items and also had lunch at Miss Batida (it was the kiosk where the locals were purchasing their food). Lunch was very cheap -- $1 for an empanada. My sister had the beef, and I had the... More

Plaza del Mercado de Rio Piedras is a larger, more local market - different from La Placita (La Plaza del Mercado de Santurce). This one is near the University, and a bit larger than La Placita. The Rio Piedras market is interesting to visit for very local food, produce, and cheap clothes and shopping items. We barely saw any tourists,... More

I was traveling by myself but la placita was a safe, very fun area. I didn't make it to the market during the day, but it was great at night. Less than $2 for a beer and you can hop from bar to bar.

The farmer's market is fun to check out during the day, but the plaza really comes to life at night. I went on a Friday night, but assume most nights are like this: the streets are blocked off to traffic and the entire 2-3 block radius around the plaza turns into a giant block party. The bars open their doors... More
