On Monday, the last day of our Puerto Rico vacation, I had a great time fishing with CFA Caribbean Fishing Academy. Captain Luis took me to about four different spots, where I caught three yellowtail barracuda, a tri-tail fish and a hammerhead shark. Since the hammerhead is threatened/endangered, we took a picture to send to a local biologist and then threw it back. Another hammerhead and another barracuda got away.
Since it was my last day, and I had no way of getting the fish home, I let the captain have the catch. In addition to the great fishing, I got some excellent water views of the island, including El Morro.
The dock was only a 20 minute walk from my hotel, making the trip super-easy.
I highly recommend going out with el señor Bergos if you're in the area. Three final notes:
1. You'll have better luck if you do the morning excursion rather than the evening one.
2. This is NOT a party boat. We drank water and fished.
3. It's expensive but worth it, and your money goes to good causes: preservation of the aquatic ecosystem and educating local at-risk youth.
