- Harriet1 contributionA calming way to spend an hour away from the beachThe gardens are beautiful and Barney is a helpful but relaxed, hands-off host, available to answer questions about the plants and birds while allowing guests to explore the garden at their leisure. At $20 each, the experience isn't a cheap way to spend an hour, but the birds, plants, and cement sculptures are all beautiful and the atmosphere is calming and relaxed. No hummingbirds came to my feeder bottle but my partner fed a male streamertail and I saw plenty from a little further away.Traveled as a coupleWritten March 13, 2022
- ddance65Centreville, Maryland41 contributionsNice Low Impact TourVery cost-effective and low impact private tour. Barney arranged transportation to pick us up from our Airbnb, do the tour, get dropped off at Rick's Cafe and picked up again from Rick's Cafe and delivered back to our Airbnb for the same price. We did in fact see and feed the hummingbirds. My wife was so excited to see the hummingbirds up close and personal.Written September 30, 2022
- jennyglover002 contributionsWould recommend again and again! One garden/bird lover to another!Amazing experience! Barney and Damien are knowledgeable and pleasant. Remember that this is nature and you must be patient!!! You WILL see hummingbirds. They provide sugar feeders to encourage the birds to eat from you. It is still nature and weather, heat, time of day all play a part. Once you arrive and receive your “how to” you will be free to explore on your own. Don’t forget the amazingly beautiful flowers! Sit in the garden and enjoy an delicious iced coffee while the birds hum all around you! I wouldn’t recommend this for small children—only those who can sit quiet and patient 😀. Barney was so nice-he took us to a local market on our way back so we could purchase bug spray and come which saved us a ton of money! Enjoy this gem in Jamaica!!Traveled as a coupleWritten July 30, 2021

I rode my bicycle to Barney’s Hummingbird Garden. A young man opened the gate and I asked him how much for entrance. He said it was $20 USD and I shared that I only had $1400 JMD ($10 USD). He said the owner was not in and he could sneak me in and give me a mini-tour. Usual tours were one hour, but he could show me around the property in 30 minutes or until the boss got there. I walked around the gardens and saw a few birds. Lovely. The young man quietly asked me to come to the front door and showed me out. “The boss was coming back and I can't have you in here!” He handed me back the $1,400 JMD. I was confused and handed him $400 for a tip. He literally screamed at me. “What do you expect me to do with this? This is an embarrassment!” I was taken aback, literally stepped back in shock. “Here! Take it all!” I said and pushed another $1,000 JMD into his open greedy hand and walked away. If my JMD was not enough for my entry, then he should have turned me away, but instead, he was looking for a quick buck from an unsuspecting visitor. Shame on you!
The worker was obviously terrified of Barney, he even said so. The employee's demeanor often reflect that of the owner's . So visitor's beware!

I went there with my family this morning at 10 am to a typical Jamaican welcome by the worker there. We asked how much it would cost just to be sure because on the gate it said Jamaican with with National ID would pay 1000 jamaican dollars. Others pay 20 US dollars. The two persons who accompanied me had Euros . We asked the owner Barney how much is it in euros. He said 18 euros per person. I said I am Jamaican and I have National ID to show. He said I didnt live in Jamaica and I would have to pay like the rest. When I refused to comply to unfair demand. He proceeded to curse me. To use his words ' move your bloodkleet'. Especially when he realized te rest of my Company didnt agree with him.
So to my German friend Barney 30 years living in Jamaica has not taught you to be Jamaican. To be Jamaican is an attitude topped with warmth and hospitality. Discrimination is not done here. Travelling to another country hasnt made me less Jamaican nor you less German. You maintain all advantages if you desire to return to your birth country Germany. The same way I do in the land of my birth.
If you want everybody to pay 20US dollars then use that on your websites and advertising but do NOT mislead potential customers and to classify who the Jamaican are or not. Our forefathers and the jamaican government elected by the people of Jamaica already did that!

This was the only disappointment during our trip to Jamaica. Not sure how it got such wonderful reviews? Even though someone commented that they thought the $20 entrance fee was steep we ignored it since people raved about it. Well, the entrance fee is now $25 USD per person! We arrived very early and rang the doorbell (it was a little before open time). Barney was not the friendliest man. We got next to no tour of the very small garden. We were left to our own devices after one of his staff gave us a 5 minute tour. We did see some hummingbirds, however we saw them while we were having breakfast a couple of doors down afterwards also. They gave us a little bottle of food for the birds that we walked around with and I did eventually get 2 birds to feed from it for 5 seconds. Barney did say we could come back at 4 and not be charged again since the birds were not active. My daughter and I took our loses and were not going to waste more time. Save your money!

We had read some rave reviews on this place and so were excited to visit ! We had visited other hummingbird gardens around the Caribbean that are much bigger with a lots of birds and butterflies etc . Paying much less than the 20 US dollars pp . This garden whilst being well cared for with an array of flowering trees and shrubs is very small - we were left alone to walk round and we saw just 2 male hummingbirds of the same species in over an hour. No feeders or fruit to attract a variety of birds in place just a small bottle given with sugar syrup to entice birds to your hand ! We had taken a taxi from the hotel which was 60 dollars so 100 dollars on total for the experience ! Interestingly our taxi driver saw the hummingbirds whilst waiting outside for free !

Such a special place.
Barney came and picked us up at our hotel, The Rockhouse, which was only about a 7-minute drive.
Barney's assistant, Damian walked us around and talked about all the different flowers and birds and gave us small bottles filled with hummingbird juice in hopes to attract the most beautiful hummingbird of all, the Red-Billed Streamertail.
Within minutes we saw this gorgeous bird and we were lucky enough to have him feed from the small bottle that Damien gave us! So special!
Go early in the morning as that's when the Streamertails are hungry.
Barney suggested he pick us up at 9am.
If you're a hummer fan, you'll love Barney's.

Jamaican garden full with flowers and Hummingbirds. 20 usd entrance. Owner is older German owner that lives in Jamaica for 28 years. You need to have some patience, tip is to sit and wait. The birds go to the same spot. You get a bottle with sweet water, when you hold it in the air the bird come. Amazing birds with funny sound..

My mom absolutely loves Hummingbirds, so I booked this tour for her. It was underwhelming. The shuttle ride out there was expensive, and I did not know to bring cash to pay for the entry fee. You can't pay in advance, so I brought my debit card. This was not accepted, so another member of our party had to pay in cash. The price was higher than advertised.
The owner spent about two minutes curtly talking to us and then left the premises. The young man who acted as a guide around the garden was very nice and thoroughly knowledgeable about the garden. He soon disappeared though.
The gardens are absolutely beautiful, although I'm not convinced they are 1/4 acre. You can tell the time and love the owner has put into the plants. That is why I gave it two stars.
We only saw two or three hummingbirds. Two members of our party of six were able to briefly feed them. The rest were unsuccessful.
I do not think the tour was worth the shuttle cost and the offish treatment by the owner. We spent triple the amount of time driving to and from than we did in the garden.

Mu wife and I were staying at The Cliff Hotel nearby and thought we'd check out Barney's and we're glad we did. What a magical little garden and hummingbird sanctuary Barney has created . . . very cool. Barney and Damian we friendly and knowledgeable and the hummingbird action was good the day we went. My wife was able to "hand-feed" several of the hummingbirds and they were all beautiful. It was a fun way to kill some time "off-resort" and we will probably do it again on our next visit to Negril.

The garden is very pretty. It is on the smaller side and a bit cramped. Clearly, the owner takes great care of the place and loves the birds it attracts. It was a nice experience, but a bit pricey for what it is. We payed $20 each and spent about 20 minutes there. We left with a lot of mosquito bites.

We celebrated our 30th anniversary in Negril and went to Barney's before enjoying a beautiful dinner at Xtabi. While I didn't have luck "hand feeding" the hummingbirds (it seems I scare them away when they get close) but Barney's helper did everything he could to bring them around. He turned on a sprinkler in the middle of the garden and all of the hummingbirds came to bathe - it was FANTASTIC to watch them! The flowers in the garden were also stunning. We definitely need to go back to experience it again! We went in December 2019 but that wasn't an option to select to the "when did you go?" question below.

Mid December was great for us. Weather was perfect - not too hot. We arranged with Barney’s for a pick up. The tour guide came and picked us up from Beaches. It was about 15-20 minutes drive. Barney’s is quite close to Ricks Cafe.
Can me and my husbandet visit you tomorrow 1 january? How can I get from Orcho Rios to your fantastiskt place?
Best regards Susanne Lundström

Hi,
My husband and I are coming to Negril and staying at Azul Santorini in January 2018.
We are Canadian but how much is it to visit your hummingbirds in American dollars and how far are you located from our resort? Should I book now or when we arrive?
