About
Consisting of a series of natural limestone pools, the Blue Hole is a hidden gem that captivates travelers with its azure waters. It offers quite the adventure: swim in the pools, go cliff-jumping, swing from ropes into the waters, explore a cave, and take a 10-minute hike to the Secret Falls. There are bathrooms and changing rooms onsite, with lockers and lifejackets available for rent. There aren’t much crowds at the Blue Hole, especially from mid-morning onwards.
The waterfall is best visited with a tour from Montego Bay or Ocho Rios, which often includes the option to also visit Dunn’s River Falls, or go river tubing.

We booked this tour through our resort agent to try something adventurous. Although definitely exciting, this tour is designed for anyone to participate. I was a bit intimidated at the cliff jump into the blue hole as they told me you need to be a strong swimmer. The definition of strong required for this is able to float without drowning and in my opinion anyone that can swim at all can do this. They take you to a beautiful waterfall and you jump off a platform about 5m high into the bottom of a waterfall, it’s really fun and the tour guides/lifeguards are at the platform and in the water with you. You also wear a life jacket for this. As expected when you jump in you get a bit of water pressure from the falls but with a life jacket and the water flow, you float to an area 20m away and walk back onto the shore. It’s very safe. One of the girls in our group can’t swim and the life guard offered to jump in with her for comfort and she did it and loved it.
The river float was pretty chill with a couple of spots you pick up speed for a few seconds but is otherwise a peaceful float through a scenic river.
The zip line portion was also fun. You go over some forest areas and then end the zip line flying over the river. There are some portions that give you a rush as it’s fairly high up and you land on platforms in trees. The guides tie you off when you land between lines and seem very experienced.
At the end of the activities they took us to jimmy buffets margharitaville in Ocho Rios. The restaurant has a fun vibe but the food is mediocre at best. Probably the worst meal I have had in Jamaica.
Overall, I would definitely recommend this tour. It’s an adrenaline rush and a fun day. The company Chukka is very organized and I had no concerns for safety through the whole experience. The reason I would give it a 4/5 is that they pick you up 7:30 and you don’t eat your mediocre lunch until 3 so I recommend bringing some snacks. Also, they tell you it’s fine to leave your bag on the bus at the blue hole jump, but then when you get to the river float they make you rent a locker for $8US. It’s only $8 but we brought a waterproof case to bring our phone and cash with us on the float and just wanted to leave some shoes and towel on the bus but aren’t allowed, it’s a bit of a cash grab.
Bring some cash to tip the tour guides, they are fun and did an A+ job making sure everyone was safe and had a good time. Jerome our guide and Jean, our driver were awesome.

We really enjoyed our trip to the Blue Hole. We visited as part of a cruise excursion that also included tubing down a river. I highly recommend visiting as some sort of combo with another activity because this is a short, albeit exhilarating, activity.
Our stop only involved the more developed falls where you jump off a developed platform into the basin of a waterfall. Total rush. The water is cold and fast moving, but the guides expertly scoop you up and make sure you get to the safety lines. We were allowed to jump twice before moving on to the zipline/rope swing, then we were done.
Water shoes are definitely needed and you are expected to tip your guides. All told it’s a little expensive for the length of the activity, but my whole family absolutely loved it.
My only complaint is that they could clean up a little around the shores. There were rum bottles and garbage in piles off the sides (which is pretty par for the course around Jamaica - must have something to do with infrastructure), but for the price you'd think they'd haul it away.

We did this on a rainy day and it was the perfect activity.
This activity would get choked up with large crowds. It took us 1 hr in total.
This is not for the faint hearted and is better for people who can swim (although life jackets are available). This activity would be shut down by lowly personal injury lawyers in the US. You jump from rock ledges from waterfalls into the river below. The water is 20ft deep so no issue about hitting the bottom.
I would not do this with young children or weak swimmers.
A local "guide" will escort you around the blue hole. They are not employed by the Blue hole ($25 to get in per person) and they expect a tip.
Remember average income in Jamaica is $110 USD per week.

Our driver, Mark Morris from Marks Tours (he’s the best!) drove us to the Blue Hole-admission was $20 per person (we had a group of 21).
We started with group photos, then most of our group jumped from the cliff. Afterwards, we moved on to the rope swing, where we were able to swing out and drop into the water. They have a professional photographer who took pictures (153) and sent us the link ($100).
You hike higher up and jump from an elevated platform then swing on another rope swing.
Be sure to pack your water shoes and waterproof case for your phone… they’ll sell you water shoes for $15 and the waterproof case is $10. Many in our group bought both. I didn’t intend to jump so I didn’t purchase. I still had to climb up to the top and walk across flowing water with the rest of the group and had no problem (rocks were not slippery).
Our family ranged from 7-years to 67 years. Everyone except the kid’s grandmother was able to participate in these activities.

The best part of our trip was when we met TJ a local who knew the Falls inside and out. We fell safe and comfortable with him, he was patient, pleasant, respectful and took his time making sure we were safe at all time. He explained the different areas of the Falls, even asked us trivia questions about the falls some of which we got correct :) he also answered our trivia questions. Overall, he made our trip interesting and funny. TJ was so good with us crossing all the obstacles in getting us to and from the Falls that I as a non-swimmer decided that I wanted to jump off the cliff when we got to the top and he did it with me. That's how much confidence I had in his work as a local tour-guide. My friends and I definitely recommend that you ask for TJ whenever you visit the Blue-hole next time, you will not regret the experience. Arlene

We booked a tour of the Blue Hole and Dunns River Falls. Very different experiences – both very enjoyable. First getting to the Blue Hole is part of the adventure. The destination is up a steep, narrow, road that looks just wide enough for one vehicle – but – in Jamaica this is a 2-way road. Kudos to our van driver who had to backup numerous times to allow cars going in the opposite directions to get by us.
Our tour took place on November 13, I mentioned this since our Blue Hole guide mentioned that water is frequently diverted from the river and sent down the hill via a water main. They are currently working on the main so for the next few weeks there is a lot of water going over the falls and into the hole. From reading other reviews, it appears you are typically allowed to jump from the falls and other locations around the lagoon. Due to the quantity of water currently flowing over the falls we were permitted to jump either from the platform (12 – 15 ft?) or below the platform (1 – 2 ft?)
After the jump you float down to a rope which is strung across the river and you use the rope to assist you to the river bank. After everyone made it to the bank, the guides assisted us to a natural water slide which sent us further down the river.
The area around the blue hole is simply beautiful. The staff is friendly and safety conscious.
I would recommend you bring water shoes and either a water camera or a dry bag for your phone camera. Our guide instructed us to leave our towels, beach bag, and other belongings on the van as he stated this is a WET adventure. He was 100% accurate and we were so glad we went on this tour.

This was a fun, albeit short, excursion. The experience was tarnished by the fact we messaged in advance to 'book' and were quoted a local rate of JMD$1000 but when we arrived we were refused this rate because we were 'not born in Jamaica', despite having proof of residency and a Jamaican work permit/ID. For US$25 pp (and the hefty tip you are obligated to give the guide) this is a pricey and short activity but it did get the adrenaline flowing briefly !

A group of five of us in our early 30s did this trip. It was a ton of fun. There is an area at the beginning where you can try out some jumps into the river. Be warned: the water isn't warm! Then you walk up a mostly paved/groomed pathway for about 10 minutes until you get to the bigger falls. There are also some local stands and food/drink along the way. We didn't really bring money due to the water and the prices didn't seem cheap in any event. You can again jump in there. There was a bigger and a smaller jump. To get to the bigger jump, you need to swim against a strong current and step through a narrow path along the cliff. When you land in the water, you also need to swim back up (obviously) and then grab a rope as the current is taking you down the river. The smaller one uses a rope swing into a much smaller pool with less of a current. Our guide Martin was awesome. He watched our stuff, took videos, and helped make sure we cleared the waterfalls on the rope swings.
I think most of the jumps and swimming would be fine for any kid who is old enough to swim comfortably on their own. They have life vests, but I don't think that would have changed my view about who could do it because the issue was less staying afloat and more navigating. I don't think I would have let my 6 year old jump at any of the jumps except at the entrance area (though that alone would have been worth the $20 entrance fee to her) and seeing the waterfalls would be cool. In short, there isn't anything physically demanding about this trip except the actual swimming. But I think the swimming makes this a poor excursion for children or the elderly. For anyone who can swim well, this is a really fun experience.

This was our first time to Jamaica and we wanted to experience special adventures together. My biggest concern was safety so naturally I had lots of questions regarding reputable tour guides, safe adventure destinations, and reasonable costs.
While doing my research I came across other reviews that mentioned Jacques Tours Jamaica. Other American tourists had a great time and had wonderful things to say. I emailed Jacques and he quickly responded to all my concerns and questions. We organized a private tour from Montego Bay to Ocho Rios, which included the Blue Hole, White River rafting, and horseback riding on the beach.
The Blue Hole was simply amazing! We were dropped off by our tour guide and introduced to our Blue Hole tour guide. We walked up watery trails, jumped off cliffs, and swam in cool blue waters. Amazing!
When we were done, our driver was there waiting to take us to the next adventure. We felt safe at all times.
I would highly recommend Jacques Tours Jamaica for all your tour and transportation needs. Our driver Jervis was knowledgeable, funny, and had serious driving skills on narrow windy roads.
Jamaica, we'll be back! Yah mon!

The people at the gate ripped us off for an extra $1000 JMD per person. Total rip off was $4000 JMD since it was 4 adults. Then the guy at the entrance tried to hard sell us a coconut water for $750 JMD when the regular price is $150 JMD. He told me I have to pay the tourist price and that my price is 5x higher. I told him to save his coconut water for a local then
In addition to that now I’m reading that the place has leptospirosis.

Yes, as long as you are able to do a little walking and moving. It's a little slippery at times, you definitely need water shoes.

I am a non swimmer and fear of deep water. However hubby is good swimmer. We are keen to visit blue hole with tui trip to kokono falls to. Can I just walk the falls while hubby swims. Or paddle in shallower waters. Life jacket won't conquer the fear tried it in Dominican Republic when missold a waterfall tour.

I didnt see any broken glass or sharp rocks. Thus, even no shoes would have been okay where we were, but I recommend them only for safety. I think any shoe with a strap to stay on would be fine. Sliders will definitely fall off.

Masks until after paperwork and paying. Then, follow your guide and his instructions. It is all within 100 yards. Hump as many times as you like from either base and use the hand-zip slide as often as you like. Tip upon completion and check the photo shop...barter a lot if you like one or more photos.

Just wondering how kid friendly this is for a 4 year old ? She loves the water. Also do they provide life jackets for children? Thanks

I think a 4 year old would be OK and might have fun swimming in the holes if you stay with them. They do have life jackets (but I'm not sure if some are that small). The walk to the holes has roots and narrow, steep stairs in places, so you'd have to hold their hands. They probably could do the jump, but could just enjoy it with you and swim around. The water is cooler than the ocean, so they may not enjoy the swimming. There are folks smoking pot and drinking around, and that might dissuade you.

Private Driver.
Hi, This may help other travellers. I opted to just hire a driver to take/wait and return me from the Blue hole which was a 20min drive from where I was staying in Tower Isle.
Paid the $15 entry fee and then just tipped the guide. I think this was the cheapest way to do everything and I had a great experience.
I used Tranquility Tours (FB)-

Everything was pretty dead after covid so not alot of excursions where up and running from the hotel. We got lucky and met Mr. Devroy, he is a licensed independent driver w.a clean car and excellent knowledge of the area, he seriously made this trip amazing. He knew all the hot spots and drove us anywhere we wanted to go. With very competitive rates I will never do hotel shuttle tour again, having your own driver gives you freedom to come and go at whatever time you wish. Contact Mr. Devroy aka Mr. Seemore Payless when in Jamaica 876-432-1785 tell him San Diego sent you :)!!!!

I am staying 15mins from here, instead of a full tour can I just get a taxi to the entrance and pay entrance/local guide? Or do I need to take a mini bus.
Secondly if the pick up is 8am when will it be finished? Thanks

Yes, you can take a taxi to Blue Hole and just pay the admission fee. We had a rental car and just drove ourselves.
But - I highly recommend continuing past Blue Hole another 10 minutes to Island Gully Falls. It has more falls. Blue Hole is just one waterfall and swimming hole. Island Gully has multiple falls, cliffs to jump off and a rope swing.
When you get to Blue Hole they'll try to tell you that it's also parking for Island Gully - it's not - keep going. The guides at Island Gully are wearing red shirts, the guides at Blue Hole are wearing blue shirts.
But either way, for Blue Hole or Island Gully Falls, you can take a taxi and just pay the admission fee for a guide.
I think we paid $60 admission for a family of 4, and then another $40 or $60 (can't remember) for the pictures. They had a guy follow our family and take pics.
The Island Gully Falls experience was about an hour. Fun time.
Hope that helps.
