- Leslie MOttawa, Canada29 contributionsMemorial Acte, Pointe-a-Pitre, GuadeloupeThe Memorial Acte is a very large, modern installation on the port lands of Pointe-a-Pitre. It is dedicated to the history of slavery in Guadeloupe, and in the Caribbean generally, told from the perspective of the French. The building itself is very striking. The exhibitions are well done, and it is a very moving experience.Visited January 2024Traveled with friendsWritten January 21, 2024
- GapYrColColorado Springs, Colorado119 contributionsNice modern museum in GuadeloupeModern museum in the heart of Guadeloupe talking about the island's inhabitants from the 15th century and onward with a focus on the slave trade and what was happening on other islands within the region. It highlighted some key figures in the region. The interactive nature of the museum is pretty cool with audio-guides used to help with pacing through the museum. It's divided into 3 parts with 15-18th century in 1st part, 19th-20th century in 2nd part and modern art in 3rd part through the middle of the building. This is more a focus on the entire region instead of info specific to Guadeloupe. Good way to spend a couple of hours.Visited February 2024Traveled with friendsWritten February 20, 2024

Twenty minutes walk from the cruise ship round the harbour (might be quicker to walk through town). Worth booking a ticket online. I had a ticket for 0900 and when I arrived at 0840 there was already a queue to go in (no seats to wait on). You are admitted in groups and have to leave your bag in a locker (EUR1 refundable) before you go into the ticket office/entry area. I got an audio guide in English which worked well. Excellent museum which narrates the history of slavery from an international perspective. Sadly the bridge to the memorial garden was closed as it had been raining. Don't miss the original sugarcane building outside which seems to be being left to crumble and is covered in graffiti. Couldn't find a cafe there but I might have missed it.

We found the exhibition very challenging but informative. The details about the slave trade and middle passage and life as a slave were explained well, especially with the film clips, but feel it could have made more of Guadeloupe itself and of women’s roles. For example, we already knew about Louis Delgres but had hoped to find out more about Solitude and her role in the resistance movement.
A few things could be improved: more seating would have been welcome whilst listening to the audio description; we found the activation of the audio description a little haphazard. Signage of places like the restaurant and the actual entrance could be more obvious. The reception staff could be a little more welcoming and prepared to deal with non French speakers.
All in all, though, an unmissable stop-off and a restaurant with great views and fantastic food and staff.

Brilliant, informative museum.
Loads of information
Imaginatively displayed, fabulous audio system for guiding you around. Took a good two hours , brilliant for older children too
Only 4 stars because you have to buy your ticket online which was a nightmare as had no 3G on phone . Should be able to pay cash . Impossible if you didn’t have a modern phone . Took best part of an hour to get the ticket !

My job is to organize art exhibitions in Museums and I have beeen extremely impressed by this one. It has won the Best European Museum Award for 2017. It has many wonderful features. The one I liked the best, was to add to the old artfacts and documentation some great contemporary art installations.

They force you to get rid of your phone if you want to visit it and give you audioguides. So I just say no thank you and went away. They say it's to avoid people taking pictures i side. Seriously, they should open their eyes, we are in the 21st century, trying to forbid people to take pictures and take their phones away is like modern slavery. So just don't go there, don't loose your time with people who has not understand the world has evolved.

Went to see this museum a week day afternoon thanks to the good review of tripadvisor.
First you have to know that it isn't made for young children at all. And it is hard to find as there is few indications on the road, however if you follow "pole caraibe" university, it is just 5 min away from it.
It is a huge building, with modern features, so you can see it from afar.
Once inside, the people at the reception are very helpful and friendly; there is discount available for student, senior, and other so bring your paper with you because the regular entry price is €15.00, which is quite a lot for a french museum. However once you are inside it is totally worse it, you have some headphone (available in 3 languages) that explain everything as you go through the museum. everything is interactive with videos, sounds, reproduction and representations of how slaves lived. Although it is a very strange way to go through the museum, as there isn't a chronological nor geographical order, it somehow make sens.
plan at least half a day to be worse your money as there is a lot of information going on and you will probably need time to assimilate a maximum of information. and be aware that once you leave the permanent exhibition you cannot go inside again.
There is also a genealogy exhibit and an outside view to go to but the footbridge was closed (it closes at 6pm) so I didn't get to see it, but i was invited to come another day as it was free to go there.
it was overall extremely interesting and i would probably have spend more time if i had know there was so much to see; so now you are warned!
Go there, learn, enjoy!

Powerful museum depicting not only the history of slavery in Guadeloupe and its impact of its economy, but also included origins of slavery and how it impacted the world economy, social impacts and development of societies. Never ending story since it takes it up to present day and one will leave feeling moved, saddened and angry that we are still dealing with this issue. Was told it was a must place to visit and I will totally agree after visiting museum. Head phone included in admission in multiple languages.
