- sam cAnn Arbor, Michigan327 contributionsGreat views, interesting historyVisited Fort Frederick as part of a larger, multi-stop tour of the island. This was probably my favorite part of the trip. Takes a little while to get up there, but it is an enjoyable drive up to the fort (lots of great views and interesting to see the communities of the island). You can get a guide that will give you a little education about the fort, which is very interesting to hear and point out features of importance. Views from the top of the fort are spectacular - you have a great vantage point of the island, being able to see in many different directions for a long way (and see some of the other landmarks of the island)! Really enjoyed visiting the fort. If you like views, this may be worth going up to see standalone. If you're going as part of a multi-stop trip like me, this is a great spot!Visited January 2023Written January 21, 2023
- Reslysten54Vienna, Virginia2,059 contributionsSpectacular viewsOur guide, Erica, was very knowledgeable and spoke in clear English. After the overview we had lots of questions and she demonstrated her comprehensive knowledge of Grenada. There was no formal charge, but she earned a nice tip. The views are spectacular, but knowing the history of this fort adds a lot. A local band played by the entrance to the fort which added nice flavor to the visit.Visited January 2023Written February 2, 2023
- austinfamilyof4874 contributionsGreat viewsWe visited the fort right before closing. There was a wedding taking place with the harbor in the background and a storm coming in over the mountains. The fort is somewhat preserved (especially when compared to its neighbor, Fort Matthew). Great views of the harbor and the rainforest. There are almost no explanations, so if you want to know more about the fort you should get a guide.Visited December 2019Written January 11, 2020

Given the fort's prominent position overlooking the town and harbor, the views are really nice. However, not much else historical can be derived from visiting the fort unless you get a guide. There are rest rooms outside the fort.

Make sure you include Fort Frederick in your tour. Fabulous views of the area before leaving the area for the rainforest. You can spend at least 20 minutes at Fort Frederick checking out the town and looking at some of the buildings still not fixed after the hurricane of 2017.

As someone who was born in Grenada but not raised their, I knew the basics of the history of my country. While visiting with friends we fort Fredrick’s was in the the list of to do and the tour didn’t disappoint, our tour guide was Sophia she was so young but extremely educated on the historical facts. She had our attention from start to finish and even quizzed us at the end of the tour, she made the experience just great.

Great views! It is an old Fort and the friendly guides tell you the story of the Fort and of quite a number of the other landmarks that you can see from the Fort. You get truly panoramic views so you can basically see half of the island. It's gorgeous! The story of the Fort itself was interesting, especially the tunnels. There are a few steps/inclines but its not a far walk.

Great trip to Fort Frederick - easy to get to in a hire car and small entrance fee ECD 5.25. Stunning views of St George's, Grand Anse and the interior towards Grand Etang an My Qua Qua. Well maintained and full of history.
A must for pictures alone!

Fort Frederick was was started by the French in 1779 and completed by the British in 1791, after the island changed hands. The ruins are interesting, but there is not a lot to see here. The views of St. George's are magnificent, though.

We went as part of a tour and were glad to go for the lovely views especially over our cruise ship. The grounds were well kept, not much of historical detail to see or read but we had a good guide which helped. It was very well kept around the fort. There were a few stalls selling spices and souvenirs.

A very interesting piece of history. One of the forts built in St George's. Lovely views off the sides looking on all of st George's. Short informative tour telling you about the forts history. Also there is a lovely breeze at the top of the fort which is very refreshing on a hot day.

The views were beautiful from the fort. The guide did a good job giving us the history. It was nice to see the island from way up high in the hills. The fort, eh??? If you are into forts you will enjoy.
We enjoyed to drive and the view.

Really great vantage point to see the area of St George’s. Interesting spot with some original brickwork but it is definitely the spectacular views that draw you in. Easy to access by car and then a short walk

Hi Julie. You say that you took a private tour on Grenada. Was that pre-booked or did you arrange locally and who with?
Thanks

About how long is the "healthy hike" up to the fort?

It's not trifling, there's some legitimate altitude gain. Just take your time, and take a breath. Stop and enjoy the halfway up view.

Is this fort in walking distance from the port? Or is there a bus that can get us there?

Absolutely walking distance if you give yourself an hour for there and back. Get good directions so you don't go the wrong way.
